Course updated 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 22, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

22 hole layout. Nice mix of difficult wooded holes and open holes to get your score back down.

Cons:

Many tee signs are incorrect if even present. Arrows are spray painted on ground but sometimes faint. Print out the map or bring your phone. Otherwise you will have to use your veteran discgolfer tracking skills.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a fun easily accessible course just off the interstate.

Don't Sell It Yet 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 5, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course has so much land to work with. There are multiple basket locations that keep it different and make the course challenging.
Some very nice long open holes mixed in with some heavily wooded, very challenging holes. This course has so much potential.
Baskets are in great shape.

Cons:

Tee signs are scattered across the course.
SOme holes have tee pads and some holes are natural pads.
Alot of blind shots without tee signs
No rhyme or reason to the course layout
No one takes care of this. Read below comments as I will go into detail.

Other Thoughts:

After playing near all 17/18 of the holes with a google map gps tracker someone had uploaded, I ran into a local and played the course again. According to him, no one has been maintaining the course in years. He just moved there about two months ago. Said that he and a group of 3 other guys were beginning to place the tee signs back up on the rights holes. This would cut out alot of the walking around blind bc the tee signs actually have good layouts drawn up on them. There are two holes that need to be reworked so they have made two temp holes throwing to a basket twice from completely different locations. This is really a course I wouldn't suggest playing without someone who knows their way around it. HOwever, it was a very fun course once I got the tour from the local. Don't sell this course yet. Just keep watching for improvements and see what happens.

Good course if fixed 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

If you can figure out some of the layout, there is a decent design. The woods holes are interesting, but tight. The course is mostly open on some fields but also has a few holes in the forest. Holes are mostly around the 300ft range. Easy to locate the course, just off of I-85 on campus at AUM. Baskets are decent.

Cons:

I think this course has been forgotten or something. There is basically no maintenance other than the fields being mowed. The signs are all rearranged currently in the wrong places and the layout is basically impossible to figure out for a first timer. I found a pile of tee signs at the edge of the woods so that wasn't a good sign of the current conditions of the course. Some tees are either hard to find or not there. (one of the other reviewers on this site has a map, you should check that out if you're playing here for the first time)

Other Thoughts:

This is a course that probably has seen better days. The design is actually good but the maintenance issues are so bad that it makes you forget that. If someone put some work into this course it would easily be a good one, especially since the Montgomery area only has one other course currently. Hopefully this course will improve soon.

u need map skills 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 7, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great potential if they ever work on it. Once you figure out the layout (only 17 holes) it's ok. The first time I played I couldn't figure it out-2nd trip I brought the google maps overlay with hole location and 15 min later I was oriented correctly.
Great mix of open shots, elevation changes, etc. The woods are super tight so bring your A game.
Medium lengh course but will be a challenge if you have back or knee problems due to terrain.

Cons:

Markers are nearly gone (print map and bring with you).
Blue colored tees make it very challenging to see them.
Wood holes need a lot of work to open up some space (roll baby roll - I challenge any beginner to throw!!!)

Other Thoughts:

Great potential if they take the time to work on it.

Course Layout 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 21, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

There are a variety of shots. It's difficult to follow for first timers. I made a public course layout in Google Earth that you can access on your iPhone, to make learning the course easy! Note that there are only 17 holes, and it doesn't end up real close to hole 1, but all in all it's not bad to follow. Some holes in the woods are very tight. I personally like this!

Don't waste your time 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 27, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course has potential to be decent

Cons:

No tee pads, well maybe one or two.
No tee signs, well, again, maybe one or two but in no order.
Horrible map There is a number 1 then it jumps to D, E, F, etc. then eventually to 9, no 12 and no 18. Seriously??!!

No arrows to next tee/basket, although I don't think it would help much.

Other Thoughts:

The few holes I was able to locate and play weren't bad, however, the navigation is absolutely horrible. I couldn't even find hole D. and I tried to follow the order on the map but it made no sense. I teed off #1 which actually had a teepad. but then couldn't find D, E, no tee pad, then F was labeled at #18 and G as #6. the next few I only found because they were in the woods and I could actually see some trails, but again no teepads so no way to know where to start. After the wooded few I gave up and on my walk out I did see a concrete teepad in the middle of the field that had a sign but it said #11 and #2 so either it was a shared hole or just as confusing as the rest.
This is by far one of the WORST courses I've ever played, not that I've played a ton, but I have played a few with no tee signs and no tee pads and they were still easier to follow. Whoever, designed, mapped, and maintains this course needs to try way harder.
Again, I say this course has potential and may actually be fun if you know where you're going. My recommendation is that if you are planning on playing, find a local that knows the course to go with you. There really aren't any other courses around. So if you NEED to play this is really the only option.

Needs some help. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 21, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Some open holes to test your drive ~9.
Some technical wooded holes.
Friendly community. On the good side of town.
Nice baskets.
Can get windy so it gives you good opportunity to learn your wind shots.

Cons:

Alot. Currently course is in disarray. There are only 17 holes, I play 1 twice to get a full game. There isn't really a good flow to it, finding the next hole can be a challenge (no directional signs). Theres no standard layout so multiple players may be playing in a different order than yourself. Many players park beside one of the baskets which causes the whole "green" area, which is already prone to standing water, to be extremely muddy, soupy, and slippery. The wooded holes are completely unforgiving, poorly maintained, and narrow to say the least. No tee pads in the woods = mud tees that you might slip on. Thick undergrowth in the summer and a few fallen trees. No clear designation of tees in the woods (maybe some small flags). If you thrown poorly and go off the beaten path, you're in jail and you're better off laying it out in the fairway, if you can even find your disc. Lots of vines, thorns, briars, spiders, I see snakes often, and mud in the woods. If some maintenance was used the woods could be promising, most of the open holes are WIDE open, no trees, small elevation change, or misaligned tees, or no tees. One hole plays around a gazebo which if anyone is in it be extreme careful. The grass gets cut more often now but it gets pretty tall in some places. If you lose a disc or leave one dont expect a call, the community is nice but a lost disc is lost around here.

Other Thoughts:

The course has great potential, a few trees planted here and there, and some removed here and there, repour some tees and add signs and this course would be great. I feel like its just in a "playable" set up at the moment until whoever is incharge of the course can work something out with campus government.

Also there is a running path off in the woods away from the course that could be utilized for a short and technical wooded 9 holes.

Best course in Montgomery, sadly. 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 23, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

If you are willing to give up either half a day to try to make sense of the layout or any hope of actually playing 18 holes in order (or even 18 different holes in any order), you will find a few mildly enjoyable, if forgettable, holes to play.

Cons:

The course map is a joke, right? Some holes are numbered, some lettered?!?!? Some holes have tee boxes, some don't. Some have signs, some don't. Some of the tee boxes are misaligned. Some of the holes indicated on the map are simply absent. Others just don't fit into any sort of rational layout.

Other Thoughts:

This course will make you deeply appreciative of the efforts of your local disc golf club's work on your home course. The attempt at a course map is an utter failure and it is difficult to believe that someone, anyone, thinks that it makes any sense whatsoever. Take a look at it and see if you can even determine where to start.

If you are traveling to Montgomery, just forget about trying to play disc golf. Hopefully your trip will take you close to courses in other areas.

Lots of potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 14, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great mix of open and wooded terrain.
Nice variety of levels of difficulty with some very narrow fairways, plenty of turns and several wide open long straight shots.
Mostly nice baskets.
Good parking, easy access.

Cons:

Poorly marked- has changed due to construction at AUM. Fix this (and the course layout aerial photo on this site) and it'll be great!
Lots of poison ivy if you ever leave the fairway (somebody told me, I wouldn't know personally).

Other Thoughts:

The weather this spring is awesome here, but beware the summer heat and humidity if you're visiting central Alabama!

I only got to play this course on visits to family in Montgomery. Now that that family is gone, I'll probably never get to play it again.

This could be a really nice course if someone at the school took the initiative and fixed it up. Hopefully there will be enough interest among some students/faculty to bring it up to potential.

So-so course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 28, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's always nice to have a disc golf course near a university to introduce new people to the sport and hopefully get some cuties playing.

The course isn't too hard to intimidate new players.

The first part of the course has some nice woodsy shots and the second part is more open to allow folks to practice their distance. The contrast is nice.

I really like the blue baskets.

Cons:

This course is still a work in progress. It's tough to navigate. There's a fair amount of trash and debris. The rough on the woodsy holes is a little thick.

The open holes are really open and a bit on the boring side.

Other Thoughts:

This course is ok, if you're in the area, but I wouldn't suggest that you go out of your way to play it otherwise.

I didn't enjoy it. 2+ years drive by

Pros:

-Parking is free and open to anyone on the weekend (otherwise you have to have a student pass to park...at least that is what the campus security told me)

Cons:

-Course design isn't very creative
-Grass was about shin height
-No signs at the tees (I had no idea where the pins were on some of the holes)
-Baskets were pretty beat up

Other Thoughts:

I'm not originally from that area, and it was insanely hot and humid when I went (June). I know this has nothing to do with the course itself, but it is a factor to consider when deciding whether or not to go to this course.

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 10, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Holes 9 - 18 are a joy. Not difficult but give you an opportunity to use several different shot selections over them and especially fun of the beginner as you can actually throw that spike hyzer up there on an actual hole and see it do what you think it will on the course. as well as several fundamental shots that you will need to get yourself out of trouble on less forgiving courses. Good players can go out and empty their bag on several of these holes just having fun grazing the basket and getting the occasional ace.

Cons:

most holes are fairly straight with slight hyzer/anny shots on a few holes and some good elevation on 3.

Other Thoughts:

Wish I had a course like this one nearby to go practive shots doing what I want it to do and or learn proper throwing techniques for getting the disc to work for me, not the other way around.

Other Thoughts:

Update 2/6/2011 - Just finished playing this course again. As the course conditions indicate, there is pretty massive construction going on in the main, "open" part of the course. Fortunately, other than creating some MUD, it doesn't seem to have that much of an overall effect on the course(other than the loss of a few holes that has already been mentioned). The reason for my update, however, is that there have been 4 brand-new holes added recently. Even better, these new holes are tucked away in the wooded section and, as such, really give the course a new, much needed, flavor. The old layout was somewhat one-dimensional, being pretty open. The new holes are tight, wooded shots requiring less distance and more accuracy and creativity. They are still pretty green and need some traffic, but I enjoyed them nonetheless. In addition, I met another local, who went out of his way to come over and let us know the new layout(easy once I saw it but might be slightly confusing if you didn't know...i'm sure this will improve when the holes season a bit). I don't know what the future holds for the course(i'm told the construction is for a new wellness center..not sure if the existing holes will be allowed to remain so close to a busy building), but for now if you're driving by, don't let the construction scare you away...this is still a fun course.

This is a fun course. Played it a few times and enjoy it each time. Pretty wide open...precision not really required, and distance scores.
Some construction at the small campus has killed a few holes(1-3 i think), but a few newer holes seem to have bene added to compensate. As such, some of the signs are slightly wrong and the layout can be a tad confusing. Got lucky and talked to a local last time and got some good beta. Had been playing the course wrong and missing a few holes, but he set us on the right path. Also said that there was some work going on in the adjacent woods that is adding a few new holes. Not sure how many or an ETA, but the would be a welcome addition. Being from Columbus, this course is a fair drive, but has been worth it for some variety.
One point to note is that, apparently due to a "new" walking trail which meanders through the course, pets are not as well received as they once were. We like to travel with our JRT who's very well responsive to voice commands and very friendly. However, a local police officer(Montgomery police, NOT campus police) took the time to flag us down and walk out(as I'm bagging an "offering" he wanted to leave on the course) to tell us we need to keep our dog on a leash, regardless of the fact that we were the ONLY people on the course(discers and walkers included) and that he stays within 20 feet of us anyway. She then proceeded to make no less than 6 drive-bys over the course of our round to make sure we didn't ignore her "advice". I guess the good thing is that this must mean there's not much crime occurring in Montgomery that she has an hour to ensure a friendly dog doesn't bother the invisible walkers. Because of this, we probably won't be making any more road trips specifically for this course, but I'll likely play it as I'm passing through or when/if it's extended.

Cons:

Tee sign distance never seemed accurate. Level of difficulty was low for a good am but still enjoyable.

Pros:

I have to drive over an hour to even find a disc golf course so the simple fact that this course has baskets makes it a positive for me.
You know how you feel when you first get a disc golf driver and you just want to go out and see how far you can throw it and then shoot at a basket? This course is perfect for that, lots of open spaces and holes that you can reach with a good throw.

Cons:

This course hasn't been mowed in a long time. The weeds were up to my knees in some places and one hole even had weeds growing up through the basket. It is hard to enjoy playing when you lose discs that are thrown down the middle of the "fairway." It is hard to figure out where you are supposed to go next and may of the holes no longer have signs. None of the baskets are numbered either.

Other Thoughts:

Like I said, I have to drive to play so even with the weeds I gave this course a go, but if it hadn't been for the drive I wouldn't have bothered given the condition. If they decide to mow it again I would give it another shot.

AUM's course is a wide open course with decent distance. This is another grip it and rip it course. Bring your driver and a putter and thats all you'll need so you can leave your big bag at home.

Cons:

There's not a whole lot to the course. Very little OB a couple of mando routes means you have very little in the way of a challenge for accuracy (other than aiming for the basket obviously)

Other Thoughts:

AUM is a nice course to play if you're in the area. The lack of trees makes it easy to navigate for new players but the distance could be a bit much. For pros or players with distance there's not a lot to it.
