Circle C Project Wrap Up
• This has been the most money that the CoA (City of Austin) has EVER put into a project like Disc Golf courses. (The last meeting recorded that it was well over $80k)
• CoA is happy with the project turn out, volunteerism, dedication/commitment by the club, and future focus of the partnership
• CoA = pleased = DG promotion throughout the Parks & Rec Depts.(P&R) and community (for a private & government project)
• Waterloo calls for comments and input on the course/project to better the work, the course, the area to support the sport and city.
• Some large projects are still being attended to; CoA has had to commit large equipment to other projects, so there is still some gravel, materials, other that needs to be moved and put in places, etc (hope to resolve soon)
• CoA requests that the park be kept clean
o Waterloo requests that the word is spread, Pack it in/Pack it Out to minimize trash on the course or overflowing trash cans (less the city will be concerned about)
o Waterloo will be scheduling clean up projects in the future. (i.e. spend an early day to clean, then maybe play afterwards, etc)
• Path paving is in the works from the restroom area to the Tee Pads, etc. This will provide aesthetic, and practical purposes for the park and patrons.
• Future Project: Bulletin Board/Kiosk at the coarse "head" for shade, course rules, local information, postings, etc. The date cannot be determined currently due to P&R projects and Waterloo funding constraints.
• Please promote Disc Golf Etiquette. Large numbers of new players are growing at the course; let smaller groups pass, and try not "herd" each hole with 10-12 players, etc. Use the time to inform and educate courtesy so that all can enjoy and share.
• Respect the course after it rains (24/48 Hrs) and try not to play it. Move your group or round to another course. Currently the course is not a "pay to play" like WILCO, so it cannot be closed off officially. (it is still public) Encourage the course courtesy to move to another, etc. by spreading the information to newer players and events.
o Soon the CoA will revise an ordinance outlining the procedures to close (like WILCO), but policy/procedures take a while to develop (politics afterall)
o CoA Ordinance will allow the post of signs, etc to deter players from the course.
o Current option = Teach People and Spread the Word
Circle C Mini's and Upcoming Events
• May 23rd ~ Waterloo Fundraiser Event
o All divisions (incl. Pro) paid out in Disc Nation Bucks
o Help raise money for future projects and replenish funds used for the signs at Circle C
o Door Prize = Drawing for a Full basket (formerly at Circle C) Must be registered to play, to be eligible (you play = you get a raffle ticket)
• June 6th ~ Waterloo Mini
o Normal Payout scheme is in effect IAW Divisions and players, etc.
o Ace Pot is currently at $150.00
• June 13th and 14th ~ "The Battle of Slaughter Creek" C Tier Tournament
o 1st Waterloo Tournament at the Course
o CoA and PDGA Approved
o Limited to 72 Players, once posted it is assured to fill up fast
o Friday Doubles will be available
o Entry for Divisions = TBD
o It is to help raise money and replenish funds
o SPONSORS ARE NEEDED = please contact them and get them for the event
o FYI ~ Course is NOT reserved (public park) so casual players can play but are HIGHLY DISCOURAGED, so provide them the info that they should avoid the course that weekend due to the large crowds, etc. this will only benefit the players and Tournament organizers.
Upcoming Projects
• Bartholomew Park (aka "Bart")
o Scheduled to be renovated soon, and should last about 1 month
o Multiple departments are working with this project, so planning, work, and support are crucial
o It will have 18 Holes when completed
o It will have Tee signs, trash cans, etc.
o It will have a completely new layout and design to compliment parking in the pool parking lot, coordinated with creek crossing structures, etc. Holes #1 (Tee Pad) and #18 (basket) will be near the pool.
o Erosion controls will be in place and others improved
o Concrete pads will be in place. They will be installed by CoA employees, supervised by Mike Olse (Waterloo Board member and CoA Employee)
• Met Center Business Project
o Commercial project cooperatively funded by the CoA and Private entities
o Newest Disc Golf course in the Austin area (last one was built in 1990)
o Met Center is a "long term" project of development
o Developers hope to have it open this year, they are awaiting CoA approval for this portion of the project
o Currently they are/have de-vegetated the area (removed the unwanted growth and are restoring others) for the course, but they are needing it to grow back more for proper planning as to be a part of the natural environment, etc.
• Pease Park
o Currently not in the "works" for improvement or development
o Currently club focus is best elsewhere because of the multiple agencies directing the future of the park
o Watershed Protection and Development Group (WP&DG) is leading the renovation of the creek, the erosion control, and the wastewater in the park
o Long term plans are undecided until the WP&DG work is completed.
o WP&DG projects WILL affect the course; currently Holes #2 thru #6 will be a challenge due to the location. They are in jeopardy because it is just not feasible for them to be where they are. Over the years the course, erosion, and usage of the park have changed greatly from the original layout.
o WP&DG are looking at creating and addressing water crossings for the course and the park in general.
o WP&DG are concerned with Suring up and establishing 60ft zones from the "top of the bank" to prevent more erosion and provide better flow, drainage, environment, etc for the creek through the park.
o WP&DG will NOT address the baskets, course layout, etc. this is the responsibility of the CoA Parks and Recreation Department. So once the erosion control is complete, the CoA P&R Dept. will address the course design.
o WP&DG project to complete the projects in 2-5 years.
o WP&DG plan to have official public meetings and forums on these actions (with public attendance/input)
• Searight Park
o Multiple departments are working with this project, so planning, work, and support are crucial.
o Plans are in the development phase to improve the park and the course
o No timeframe for work, no permits have been issued for the work, etc
o Baskets are to be replaced by CoA funds
o Remodeling will not close the park or course entirely, the plan is to work on 9 Holes at a time; so that there is only a partial closure
o Plans will include erosion control, creek crossings, signs, etc.
• Waterloo Park
o Waller Creek Authority Project will change the course as it is now known, this will be the last year that the temporary course will be set up as it has always been known (it will never be the same after this year)
o Will be the focal position for the "tunnel intake" of the Waller Creek Project; to include ponds, holding pools, and other public/environmental features and developments.
o Will be closed for at least 1-2 years.
• Zilker Park
o No current proposals for future projects listed or planned.
• 32nd Annual Waterloo Tournament at Waterloo Park
o This will be THE LAST YEAR it will be held in the current configuration, due to the construction coming.
o Will be held the 3rd weekend in October. This year it will be on the 16th, 17th, and 18th.
o The "McC Note" Challenges are being accepted. (Pay $100 to reserve a guaranteed spot, cover all costs and charity, and get special players pack well worth the value)
o U.T. will be playing Out of Town that weekend, so there should be no interference with tailgaters, and reserved portions of the park.
• Miscellaneous
o NEW Course is setup near Lockhart
o Lockhart course is a PRIVATE Course that is FREE.
o Contact the owners via the website for access onto their property, currently access is very limited as they are not ready for large public groups..
o Course is prominently sandy, so access roads should be driven by HIGH AXLE vehicles because the loose sand sometimes makes it harder for sedans, etc. The road improvements are to come in the future. Use caution to avoid getting stuck.
