Pros:
DISCatchers are still there, but really showing their age.
Tee markers, so at least you know where to tee from.
Looks like a DG only area, even though its labeled Barr Park.
A few holes are designed pretty well and require accurate throws.
Cons:
Let's see where do I start?
--The tee markers are just that, 4X4 posts about two feet high, and just the hole #.
--Most of the carpet tees are worn, torn or just missing.
--Several holes are badly designed, #2 basket is behind a low hanging tree, on the far side of the pond, on a narrow ridge around the pond, #3 follows that same narrow path (only about 8 feet wide and sloping down on both sides), that's the entire, winding fairway, #4 tees from that ridgeline, across the pond/wet area, at the mid-point of the pond (at least 200 feet in either direction to get around the pond).
--#1 has a dump pile of tree branches right in front of the tee, this should be temporary.
--The baskets are in different degrees of disrepair, rusty, leaning, etc.
Other Thoughts:
It appears Barr Systems has left the property some time ago (ironically, they are now located less than a mile from Northside Park), and whoever was behind installing and maintaining this course left with them.
There are now other businesses on the property, and it is maintained, but not the course area. It is a nice looking property, right in the middle of a residential neighborhood in Gainesville.
#1, #7-#9 are in the same area, flat with large, old-growth trees that require shot-shaping to get through. #6 tees in the far corner of the property, and plays along the slope leading down to the pond/wetlands/low area. (That area was mostly dry the day I was there, but the area around #2 is full of water.) This is actually an interesting Par 5, with the basket on the steep slope.
This was probably a fun, somewhat challenging course in its better days, serious disc loss potential on #2 and #3, but otherwise fun. Definitely would be great to have this outside your office building. But, with Northside and Jonesville in town, I can see why this one doesn't get much attention. It is however, a nice, quick course to bag between the two stars in town.
