Excellent Beginners Course

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 11, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

1) Beautiful multi-use park just off the I-24 interstate. Lightly wooded course with tall mature trees. Perfectly manicured. Several covered pavilions, a bath-house, sports fields that don't come into play of the disc golf area, and walking trails.

2) Extremely solid introductory level course for new players, children, and the noodle armed. Probably a wonderful course for the entire family. Risk of a lost disc here is almost impossible but does exist if one were to throw extremely far into the tall grass/woods area off the property itself.

3) The fairways are wide with multiple lines and gaps, utilizing wide mature trees and the road through the park as it's defenses. There are no water features on the course (and normally this would be a negative) but for this style of course, it just aides in targeting the beginner player and reducing the risk of losing a disc.

4) Large 5' x 12' textured concrete tee pads and Discatcher baskets in typical HB Clark style. Definitely an older course install but everything from the old style full color tee signs to the massive course map information board is still in, well loved, but good shape. The course definitely shows its age, but it has aged well for its purpose.

5) Though parking is minimal near hole #1, it is ample enough and there are multiple other places to park within the complex and still within a short walk of #1. Several trash cans located throughout, and there is no underbrush in any of the fairways to concern yourself with. Outside of the far edges of Holes #2 and #3, tall grass isn't even a concern.

6) Very intuitive navigation. The course flows directly and smoothly and can easily be played without a course map. Most tees are with 75 in direct line of sight of the previous holes basket. Hole #1, the Practice basket, and Hole #9 basket are all within a few feet of the main parking lot as you arrive.

7) Very little elevation and easy to navigate means this course is easy to walk, utilize a cart or stroller, or even play multiple rounds with ease. The tall canopy also provides a wonderful amount of shade for almost the entire course.

8) Very short course length wise and can be tackled by better players with just a putter (We played a 2 disc Par 2 event here recently which consisted of just a putter and 4 speed approach disc and faired well and had a blast doing it). Although a beginner course at it's core, it does provide some challenging lines to work on your short game if you choose.

9) Plenty of ace runs in the 250 foot average range, some shorter, some longer but mostly all holes you can run if you so choose.

Cons:

1) Lack of a signature hole. Due to its small overall footprint, lack of water features, and very similar hole shape and design there really isn't a hole that stands out above the rest. Most are just ok/good holes that don't differentiate themselves from one another.

2) Lack of elevation change or unique features to enhance the experience or increase the challenge.

3) Busy park setting with the walking trail seeing the most use. Lots of dog walkers, car traffic, and people generally oblivious to the fact they are playing/picnicing on a disc golf course. Be careful of your surroundings.

4) As alluded to earlier, the course is very small. Although the design does its best to space the holes out and play in a counterclockwise route avoiding fairway overlap, tree kicks can and certainly do impede on other holes. Especially with the baskets and tee pads being so close together.

5) Devoid of it's own personal character or uniqueness. While the course serves its intended purpose, and manages to look pretty while doing so, it's easily forgettable in the grand scheme of things.

Other Thoughts:

Well executed course given the space and constraints placed upon it. I agree with some of the reviewers below me that every town should have a course like this strictly dedicated to newer and less skilled players. This course is wonderful at allowing for success without being punishing for mistakes and is a great introduction style course for many. Definitely not a destination course. You would have to couple Doctor's Park and multiple other area courses together to make the trip here worth it. Though being so close to I-24, if you want to dip in for a quick 30 minute stretch your legs round, it's well situated. If it were not a direct beginner targeted course I would score it lower, but it is a decent typical course that provides exactly what it intends to.

9 Similar Holes 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 26, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

(2.193 Rating) A lightly wooded short course under a tall wooded canopy.
- NOVICE FRIENDLY - This is a very solid Beginner and Novice level course, and they will love this course alike. No chance to lose a disc unless you put it high in a tree. The fairway lines are wide and there are no water hazards.
- BASICS - DISCatcher baskets and excellent concrete pads. The tees measure 5 feet by 12 feet.
- MAINTENANCE - The grounds appear to be mowed regularly. The course photos from 2013 show some substantial overgrowth on the right of fairway (2) and (3), but it was mowed an additional 30 feet farther right on my play. The park was very clean and I saw a couple garbage cans in the park.
- SIGNAGE AND NAVIGATION - One of the easier courses to follow. There is a great course map near tee (1). Excellent constructed tee signs. No next tee direction on the tee signs, but almost all the tee signs are spotable from the prior basket. I'll also mention that the course is perfect for those that like to bring out their disc golf cart.
- QUICK PLAY - A single could easily complete a full 9 in under 30 minutes. Groups of 4 should probably finish in under an hour.

Cons:

Short on uniqueness and void of a challenge.
- HOLE VARIETY - This is a one-hole theme kind of course. Almost entirely lightly wooded under a tall canopy with loosely defined fairways. Several holes have already blended together in my memory. The distance variation is minimal, all par 3s and void of any water features.
- ELEVATION - Like nada. The terrain is listed as mostly flat, but I'd relist it as Southern Illinois, if it were an option. No more than 5 feet of elevation change throughout the entire course layout.
- DIFFICULTY - The challenge here is perfect for Novices and lower end Rec players. The tree coverage is moderate to lightly wooded, but misfires will still have a great chance to save par as there is almost no undergrowth to be found on site. Intermediate level players like me should average 3 to 4 down while Advanced players should average 5 to 7 down.
- EXTRAS - No benches or trash cans by the tees. No multi-tees or alternate basket placements either. There is a practice basket, shelters and restrooms in the park.
- SPACING - Slightly below average. If the course were full, there would be a few tees that could be reached by an errant throw because of minimal tree protection. Also, a few fairway edges feel partially shared.

Other Thoughts:

Considering the site, a very well done course IMO. Every town needs to have a course like this one to encourage newer players, but also to provide some get-a-way fun for those that only have time to play once a week with friends. Local Recreational, Novices and Beginners could love this little place. Not destination level by any means, but baggers coming here can easily pick up Doctors park too, with less than a 2 minutes drive between the two.
- RAW BEAUTY - The natural elements on and around this course are about average. As stated above, no elevation changes, a moderate amount of trees and no water. The landscape is just too similar for my preference. The maintenance of the park is the best beauty aspect.

Pros:

All essentials- concrete tees, 9 baskets plus a practice basket, effective signs, course map at kiosk. Plenty of parking (though the disc golf lot is gravel, where everything else in the park is paved)

This course is mostly wooded shot shaping, with some options on to how approach the hole. Good fun for new players and the family with interesting holes, but nothing too long with average hole length at your normal 275'.

Smaller area, but makes the most out of available land and the trees here.

A really good complement to the more open and longer park course just up the street. (Too bad these two aren't the same course with a chance to alternate holes between the two styles!)

Cons:

Many holes play close to the park road that winds throughout the course, but not too bad.

Nothing super memorable, and other than some trees to work around, nothing real difficult. Very flat, no elevation change at all.

Other Thoughts:

I always recommend taking a picture of the map, but be sure to pay attention where hole 5 is, cross the road back towards the parking lot.

Appropriate small city 9-hole park style course. And a bonus is that that it is very close to another 9-hole course less than a mile down on the same street, good complements to each other.

2.5 is average, nothing outstanding, but definitely has everything you need. (on the lower side that number, around a 2.25 to me). Very appropriate for the land here and as a city park course. Bonus is the other 9 holes at Doctors Park <mile away.

Pros:

just passing through town and this was a nice stop. The course was flat and short. there were a lot of trees that added some nice challenge to the game. There were a few mandos that added to the challenge. The course was easy to navigate. The Tee pads were concrete and good sized. good signage that marked out of bounds, mandos and distance.

Nice little quick course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 13, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice little quick course right off the interstate.
Decent signs, pads, baskets - the essentials.
Clean course.
Flushing toilets, decent restrooms.

Cons:

A *little* tight, but not too bad.

Other Thoughts:

My review is not meant to be an essay but to primarily add a Rating value of the course.

Previous concerns about the course because it was so new have been rectified.

Stopped in to take a break on a 1000 mile, one day trip. I was pleased with the quick round, in and out. Very friendly locals asked me to join them in league, just didn't have the time. Thanks for asking if you happen to read this.

The name attracted me to this course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 17, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) The water that was all around the park shows it must have rained heavily recently. It created two or three shots that if desired could be played with the water as OB.
2) Garbage cans were available in a couple places on the course.
3) Kiosk with a course map at the first tee.
4) Practice Basket is available by the beginning of the course.
5) Density of the trees is mostly fairly challenging, but there are a couple or more open holes. Every hole has a number of trees to avoid, but some demand a specific shot, and other allow multiple types of shots.
6) It was a lot of fun to throw these holes with the tight density of trees. It is my favorite type of hole.
7) Beginner friendly course because there is almost no way to lose a disc and the holes are short enough that even a beginner can have 1 bad shot per hole and make a recovery shot for par. They might not recover on every hole but the idea is that it is possible to recover on every hole to prevent frustration.

Cons:

1) This course has zero elevation change. Not something I would expect in Kentucky.
2) The water while it creates some additional OB, also creates some wet and muddy fairways.
3) The construction around the teepads was half finished. I am not sure if they intended to go back to the course to fix the soil around the teepads, but if they didn't I would be highly disapoointed in the workmanship. They basically left piles of soil around the teepads that when stepped became a wet muddy mess.
4) It also seemed like whoever had done some work there last also didn't care to make sure the fairways were kept clean. It seems like they drove in areas they should not have driven and that created a muddy mess with the current conditions. I sure hope they go and over-seed heavily over the entire course.
5) There is a little danger on this course where tees may be too close to baskets or other tees. There also is a road that could come into play on about 4 or 5 holes. That is something that needs to be avoided, but unfortunately this park did not have enough room for as many holes as they put in to remain safe. Perhaps this should have just been a 6 hole course.
6) Hole #9 tee sign actually shows that it is Hole #6. A funny mistake made when the signs were made, worth mentioning but I don't put a lot of value on it in my rating.
7) Distance variation is not very good with most holes between 200-300'. That is the same shot for many people.

Other Thoughts:

While the pros and cons on this course are about the same. Most of the pros are somewhat expected. They are amenities that people are coming to expect and the cons are more related to things that I feel are causing problems on disc golf courses. They are things that make me feel like this course will not be sustainable. There are safety, environmental, maintenance issues all over this course. I am not bashing the designer for all of it, because there is only so much a designer can do with a property, and I am truly in the mindset that any disc golf is better than no disc golf, I just wish things could have been done right from the beginning. Perhaps I simply came to early in the history of this course and the issues I have seen will be resolved, but not all of them can with the current layout. Because of these issues, I simply have a low rating for this course. I would not be likely to return if all things were the same.

Lakes area disc golf 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 17, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

H.B. really used this property to it's fullest. The holes are all using fairly tight lines but all have multiple angles you can take. #1 is either a wide flick/wide anny or an -S- shot and all can get you close enough for birdie. #2 and #3 have OB to the right where an errant throw might get you lost. Hole 4 has a great hyzer look but OB lurks just right behind the basket. The rest of the holes play in some pretty wooded areas where a good straight throw is the ticket but multiple angle shots can not be ruled out. #5 is my fav hole. Slight anny with OB road all down the right side.

Cons:

9 holes is never enough but other than no trash cans or benches ( should come later) I can find nothing else wrong at this time. It's pitch and putt!

Other Thoughts:

This is def. the better of the two courses in Calvert City. Very fair distances as opposed to trees in the way and the flow of the course is spot on. This is the uglier park but is much better as a disc golf destination. No baseball fields and not a lot of people to get in the way. This reminds me of Memorial Park a lot. If you come to Calvert City play the other course first and save this for last. To quote a Michigan buddie Calvert City now has "The Beauty and The Beast" and old park is the Beast.
