Pros:
Located in Erie, Colorado, about 30-45 minutes outside Denver, This open prairie course plays in some moderately tall grass, gentle elevation, and occasionally full irrigation creek.
This course is beautifully open, with the main challenges being the terrain and the distances. There are a few trees in the park, however they are only incorporated into the course by being placed next to some of the baskets. The one exception is hole 13, in which you must throw around a tree to get to the basket 175' away.
Spacing is very well thought out, as I could often see other holes and other players in the course, but never ran into any of them. I first got out there and thought "wow what a crowded day to play" and then never saw another group. I appreciate that kind of layout, because it makes you feel like part of a disc golf community but you're round isn't bothered.
This main attraction of this course is people who would like to work on their distance, and distance accuracy. There are only a few holes that push the 350-400+ range, but the challenge is hitting the circle while going uphill, downhill, a slope, and not landing in the nearby creek on a few holes. For players with big distance, there aren't that many challenges. For the average player (I think about 2/3rs of all players drive under 350', according to infinitedisc's surveys?) this is great. For the roughly 10% of players throwing over 400', a great chance to work on target practice from [your] medium distance.
Cons:
For myself, the biggest con here is the lack of shot-shaping obstacles. The name of the game on this course is distance control and hitting your targeted landing zone. I would love a little more forced intentionality with having to hit an alley, avoid an obstacle, just something to zhuzh it up a little bit.
The actual biggest con might be the other side effect of very few trees- very little shade. Prepare to be in the sun for your entire round. Put on sunscreen, bring water if it's the summer.
The irrigation creek comes into play very quickly on a few holes, as many baskets are placed near it. However, the creek is empty a lot of the time, so sometimes it doesn't. But when it is, it can be 8ft across and 6ft deep in places. Not the biggest con, but the inconsistency of one of the courses main hazards (and a usually fair and attractive one) is a little frustrating.
Holes 14-16 are pretty identical, and 17 is not much different. After a long hot round, it seems kind of lazy designing to just give you three holes in a row that are nearly indistinguishable, when there is a definite way to avoid that situation.
Other Thoughts:
I played this course when it first opened, before it was put on DGCR, and then again years later. I enjoyed both rounds, but honestly kind of forgot I had played it before. It was only my round partner, who played with me both times, reminded me that we had played it last time I was in Colorado. So, I didn't put "forgettable" on the list of cons, but it is what really keeps me from rating this course any higher. There wasn't anything which really stood out to me, good or bad. Nothing that makes me not want to play again, and nothing that I feel drawn to return to. While I have no regrets about playing this course, it is likely in another 4 years, I will not remember a single hole.
