La vraie beauté est intérieure. True Beauty Lies Within.

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 30, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

(3.281 Rating) A better than normal HB Clarke course with great variety.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - Holes (1) and (18) are mundane compared to some of the holes within the middle of this layout. There are two loops to the course. The (1) thru (9) loop is a blend of park style and moderately spaced wooded holes. Hole (3) has some extra charm to it with the small creek running along the left side of the fairway and by the basket. Looks wise, Hole (12) is by far the bread winner on the course. (12) is a water clear shot with lots of little mounds and tall trees on the other side of the pond where the basket is. Holes (13) thru (17) are fully woods golf, and I was digging it. The beauty of this park is what bumped it just across my 3.25 threshold for a 3.5.
- GAMEPLAY - Eiffel Tower Park is blessed with a sizable and nice chunk of land. The design takes advantage of this and thus the hole variety is bountiful. There are some ups, some downs, left plays and right plays. Some holes need to miss one or two trees, some need to be threaded down a lane while others have fairway gap options with shaped line requirements. Water comes into play twice and elevation movement is very noticeable a half dozen times. Hole distances vary from the low 200s to the mid 400s. There are also several marked par 4s, but only a couple of them felt like true multi-play par 4s rather than just a bomber par 3 with an obsolete par indication.
- AMENITIES - Like most HB courses, the basic amenities are great. The baskets are older 24 chain DISCatchers, but 17 of them were still in good to great shape. The tees are concrete and measure 5 feet by 12 feet. There are also a few benches spaced through-out and I liked the picnic tables by both (1) and (17). By my count, nine new basket placements are present and it appears I played some of them. Detailed tee signage is still mostly present and a new course map is next to tee (1).
- NAVIGATION - As noted above, a new course map is posted. So despite the fact that the tee signs don't have a next tee indication on them, a brief consultation of the map should get most players back on track. Many transitions are obvious, but not them all. I did notice a couple arrows after baskets, but even when there wasn't, the map cleared up any confusion I had.

Cons:

Unconnected loops.
- GAP IN PLAY - Holes (10) thru (18) are on the other side of Volunteer Drive. Players that play the holes in order, will have to make a 600-foot walk to (10) after (9). In addition, the walk back to the car after (18) is around 700 feet. I wish I would have skipped to (10) after (1) as the walking gaps are more in the 400-foot range.
- HOLE 17 - (17) is a ridiculous arcing poke and hope shot with many unmakeable 2-foot wide clean lines. Hole (14) is also borderline flawed and unreachable due to the angle, trees, up-hill nature and deep pocket.
- TIME PLAY - I was running between holes and still spent roughly an hour here solo with zero time spent waiting at the tees. I would expect group rounds to come in at over 2 hours.
- TEE SIGNAGE - The tee signs are plus 15 years old and many are still good. Tip of the cap to HB for always putting in great long lasting tee signs. The reason I'm noting this in the cons, is that many tee signs need an update. I think I played at least 5 new placements and none of the info regarding the new placements is reflected on the signs. In addition, two tee signs were lying on the ground.

Other Thoughts:

I played both 18-hole courses in Paris Tennessee on this trip and thought that Eiffel was the noticeably better example among the pair. The only things I liked better at McNeill were the Pro 28 Baskets and leaving. I think 80 to 90 percent of the playing population will enjoy this track better. Higher skilled players that enjoy less woods plays will likely be the only ones that like McNeill better. It's not that McNeill is terrible, I actually gave that one a respectable 2.75 rating, its just that Eiffel does just about everything a tad bit better. Similar courses that come to mind include every HB Clarke course I've ever played… Joking, but Eiffel Park does generally fit into what the textbook HB style looks like. The most similar HB examples that came to mind were Paducah and Madisonville City Park. I'm sure there are better fits as I've only played 15 HB Clark courses as of this review. Not destination worthy unless a player lives within an hour or if one is visiting Paris for other reasons.

French Toast

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 26, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

1) This course is moderately to heavily wooded at times while never being too overly demanding or punishing for those who wish to play it safe.

2) Balances the line of mostly open but demanding line shaping on early holes and slowly tightens the width and increases the demand for accuracy as you progress through the front 9, then repeats the process on the back 9.

3) Several VERY soft par 4's (Hole #2 is a 393 ft single turn left to right hole through a wide tunnel of trees, Hole #3 is a 389 ft split gap left fairway or right fairway back to a peninsula green. Great looking hole, and would be a super challenging Par 3. Hole #5 and Hole #6 both right at 400 feet, both low ceiling righty hyzer holes through some narrow tree gaps intended to make these "two shot" par 4's. And they are, but very easy to birdie as long as you don't go crazy trying to get the eagle. Hole #10 is only 348 ft and wide open until the green which is protected by a ton of large trees and a very low ceiling as it's only defense. Hole #18 is 431 ft and plays down a wide open fairway around one tree to beat on the right to a wide open green. BUT for a park course intended for lower level skilled players, this is perfect. It's definitely a step up from a beginner course, has the ability to frustrate rec and intermediate players, and is still "fun" enough for the very skilled, especially if you play everything as a Par 3.

4) Two very distinct separate 9's. The front 9 is much easier and starts and finishes next to the main parking lot. Then you have a long walk across the road to Hole #10 for a much tighter wooded back 9 that adds a pond water hazard and more extreme shot angles.

5) Holes 12-14 and 16 add some difficulty with a pond that has to be thrown over once and around the rest of the time. Helps break up the similarity of some holes and definitely sets the course above the beginner level.

6) Very solid use of multiple angles and distances. If there is a putter turnover shot on one hole, you can bet you will see that shape again in mid or fairway driver distance form later for instance.

7) Solid use of elevation, although there isn't a ton on the course, the design uses the subtle rises and falls along with the tree cover well to increase difficultly and create demanding shot shapes and touch.

8) As stated previously, the difficulty progression from Hole to Hole prepares you and eases you into slightly more demanding shots with slightly more increased difficulty. Smart design and it allows you to hone in your gap hitting early without being too punishing before asking you to hit the super tight gaps later on.

9) Really fun short little track that can be played pretty quickly, our group of 4 played it in 58 minutes recently but we were trying to beat the rain that did catch us on Hole 17. I'd say a normal round for a group of 4 could be played in roughly an hour and a half at most.

10) Cute park with a full on replica Eiffel Tower. The front 9 is much more manicured and "park" esque in it's layout with the back 9 being much more of a "rural" woods course feel. Kind of the best of both worlds.

Cons:

1) This course is showing signs of it's age. Some of the tee pads are beginning to crack and become uneven, the course signage is outdated and dingy looking (though still has all the relevant info), the original lines are fading as trees have gotten much bigger and the underbrush is no longer kept cleaned up in spots.

2) The course lacks benches, bathrooms, water, and garbage cans (besides the one shelter house near the parking lot, which was locked when I last visited). This led to quite a bit of trash, mostly on the less well kept back 9.

3) There are a lot of blind tee shots (which isn't a bad thing from a difficulty perspective) but you will find yourself walking ahead quite a bit to locate pins and to see if the coast is clear (especially on the front 9 which has walking trails weaving throughout it).

4) The back 9 is "rough" and very thick off of the narrow fairways. Lost disc potential is great back there with the inclusion of the large pond. Keep an eye on everyone's shots.

5) Hole #12 is a particularly "bad" hole. You tee off through a gap of trees over the pond. Maybe only 100 feet of water that you are forced to carry. However, the first available landing zone is a 45 degree sloped bank maybe only 20 feet tall and 40 feet wide to try and land a disc on. The rest is a wall of trees. If you do manage to stick this spot, you have zero lines gaps or paths to the basket besides a wild spike hyzer back over the pond and around the trees. The 2nd landing zone is probably 250 feet of water carry and you have to crash through the tree to get back on land, and this spot is convienantly a picnic spot, maybe 30 feet in diameter with two picnic tables. This spot is blind from the tee and you are just hoping nobody is enjoying a snack by the pond if you try to land here. The third landing spot is the green. This requires a 375 ft water carry to a blind green, where you must crash through the trees and hope to hit a very small opening onto a walking trail to access the green. Then you are greeted with a basket raised probably 5 feet on a dirt mound. I'm completely certain that when this hole was designed, the tree cover was not this bad, the picnic area probably didn't exist, and there was a clear layout spot or go for the pin route. So not a bad hole initially, but a terrible one now.

6) No practice basket.

Other Thoughts:

The very first time I played this course (after about 8 weeks of playing disc golf) I absolutely loathed this course because of how blatantly it (at the time) appeared to favor the right hand backhand and punish the RHFH and LHBH. This was long before I learned how to shape a disc.

Now, years later, I appreciate the course and the challenge it provides. While even with brand new tee signs, repaired tee pads, benches, bathrooms, and all the bells and whistles this course would never reach 4 or 4.5 status, the course is good for what it is, and could improve the experience disc golfers get from playing here by updating/repairing a few problem areas. There are much better courses in the area, but Eiffel Tower is definitely worth a play when you come through, if not just for the photo next to the replica Eiffel Tower.

Back 9 More challenging,
10 bomber hyzer hole, 11- 2 anny lines, 12- pond shot into tight woods 13- blind curve lay up shot to straight tunnel shot, 14 blind SPike Hyzer (or Tomahawk) shot 15-S flex shot 16- Tight flick shot 17 HIgh Anny Shot (and a prayer)18- long Bomber anny . This course is a great practice for any disc golfer, makes you work with all your discs and all your throws.

Cons:

Vandalism to course, lack of benches, lack of garbage cans, and some tee pad and tee sign need repair.

Parks and Club need to raise some funds and update the signs and get a practice basket.

Other Thoughts:

When I first played this course several years ago, I hated it. But playing it now I really enjoy the challenges it provides, In this area W-TN and WKY its the only course that has this many challenges. Glad to see its getting more use these days and its staying picked up. Local Club meets on saturdays at 9am great bunch of guys. With some cleanup and updateing this could be a 4-4.5 course.

Challenging, fun course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 30, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Paris offers just about any shot you would like to make. There are tight runs through trees, shape shots that also require precision, overhand throws to get out of trouble when you hit one of those little guardian trees that create the gaps. Downhill shots, uphill shots....
The front 9 sets you up for the back 9 in that you get to warm up your aim. Hole one is a big downhill run that finishes under a tree. Not a terribly hard shot, but the road is just behind the basket, and since it's downhill, easy to overthrow. 2 plays along the bottom and introduces you to the woods.
3-9 weave in and around the bottoms, with several really tight gaps, blind overhill shots, and lots of opportunities to really test your accuracy. Then, you cross the road and meet hole 10. He's a friendly little guy. Longish, but not too hard.

So, you're thinking that you've already played all the hard stuff. Well, you're dead wrong.
Hole 11 is a really cool little tunnel shot with a true risk/reward situation in that there are 2 routes out of the woods. One is a really tight cut to the right, lined with pine trees, but it goes straight towards the basket. The other route is straight off the pad, but you're making the hole longer. Really neat little hole.
Hole 12 is a daunting throw over water. Not too long (maybe 100' to the shore), but if you want to make the basket, you've gotta carry a fair amount of distance, avoid the thick, thick trees and not land where you will roll into the water. Very tough hole, even if you do make the shore. This is due to the large mounds, trees, and thickets around the basket. And, we played in the winter!
13 is a long, tight uphill tunnel that eventually takes a sharp right, goes slightly downhill, to a basket set on the side of a hill that will roll your putt down to the bottom. TOUGH!
14 plays along the bottom near the lake, and is another blind shot. The basket lies on the uphill side, and off to the left with trees everywhere.
15 is a beautiful hole that plays downhill into a circle of pines. Easily the coolest looking hole on the course.
16 is a bear. No real lines to throw unless you go over the pond, or can hit a very small window to the left.
17 requires a very well placed annie (RHBH) shot, and for a short hole, there are probably 100 trees between you and your target.
Then, you make your way out of the woods for a longish annie drive that takes you back to the road for hole 18.

Cons:

They need to install some benches, trash cans and bathrooms out there. The signs are dated, but accurate-ish. Sometimes it would say a slight left, when in reality it's a pretty strong dog leg. Minor thing, and after you play it, you know. But for a first timer, it makes you walk a lot of the holes. Partly due to the plethora of blind tee shots also though.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun, challenging course that will help you hone your game. Gotta bring it to shoot good, and to me, that's a great quality in a course.

Mais oui, Paris! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 31, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very fun course, great variety of shots.
Course demands accuracy.
Hole 12 drives over water - no trees to hit!
Course flows pretty well.
The front and back nine have different flavors.

Cons:

There are some areas where a shot into the 'rough' will involve a 'disc safari' in tall weeds.
Hole 14 does not have an actual line to the pin, which could be frustrating to some players.
Vandalism of course signs

Other Thoughts:

This course is fun to play. The tight nature of some holes means that you may find yourself working very hard and making great shots just to bogey after an errant drive into a tree.
This course would improve with some upkeep.
If you enjoy playing at par, this may not be the course for you. If you enjoy overcoming adversity and amazing yourself with what you can do under challenging conditions, this may be the course you have been looking for.

TLC Needed 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 16, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a very challenging course by design. Most of the wooded holes have narrow lanes that require a variety of shots. Its in a nice area, with new bathrooms, and not far form for your favorite resturants.

Cons:

This is the course I paly at least once a week for practice and is a good course, but it needs a lot of TLC. There narrow fariways have become ever smaller than desigend bc of grown out low hanging and broken limbs for storms. The open holes (5 of them) get mowed on a weekly basis, but the wooded holes, on the other hand, once or twice in the summer. The back 9 holes 12- 17 are in need of the most work. There are limited to no acutal fairways and tress blocking every throwing lane. Plus there are briars, saplings, and posin ivy growing abuntantly. The two worst holes on the front 9 are 5 & 6. They are on the very back side of the course and rarely get mowed so 3 ft tall weeds fill what little fairways provided. Not to mention the misquitoes on those holes are vicious. Do yourself a favor, If the weeds are tall just play four and walk over to 7 and save your self some trouble.

Other Thoughts:

This is good course to play. If your from out of town then go ahead and try the full 18. If your a local looking to play or practice, then stick to holes 1-4, 7-11, & 18

****Sept 2011****
The back 9 is currently in decent shape since the playing of the tournament earlier this month. Still quiet a bit of underbrush and overhaning limbs, but there are clear lanes on most holes. Get out and play it while its good. This is the best the back 9 will be until next year at tournament time.

Neglected and abused 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 17, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Bathrooms are close by, and fairly clean. A course map at hole 1, made from sattelite images gives you a great idea of what you are getting in to. Once you get into the woods, there's lots of shade. The front 9 are excellet holes, with well defined fairways, and providing good flow through the park.

Cons:

The tee pad signs have recieved a considerable amount of vandalism. After the first couple of holes, most signs had some, or all of their information missing. The course isn't played enough to "follow the beaten path", or, if it is, the fallen leaves, trees, and branches hide it. The back 9, other than a couple of holes, are some of the hardest I've ever seen.

Other Thoughts:

The DG course has the potential to be a very good course, however, there appears to have been little, to no upkeep done since it was built. The baskets are all in good shape, considering the damage done to the tee signs. If you plan to play this course, and never have, print a copy of the course map to take with you and keep in your bag, we didn't. I would also recommend, trying to hook up with some locals, or contact the course guide to see if you could get someone to show you around the course, and again, we didn't.

Beauty and the Beast 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 8, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Front nine is brilliantly laid out, with good signage for the most part and a wide variety of shots. Makes very good use of the park's walking trail. Back nine is very challenging, but uses some unique terrain and rewards good shots.
Brand new restrooms located behind #1 tee.

Cons:

Walking trail receives a lot of use - occasionally lots of pedestrians and their dogs.
Course is very prone to vandalism - signage is often damaged or missing altogether.
Plenty of ticks in the woods during the summer months.

Other Thoughts:

As other reviews have stated, the back nine is an absolute bear for those attempting the course the first time. Couple that with a confusing layout and little signage and you have a recipe for a frustrating afternoon. Play with a local or get a map if at all possible.
However, this remains one of the top courses in the area and is well worth trying.

Great Front...Bad Back 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Great park with the front nine being a blast to play in and out of the woods...Hole one is a great start...tee pads and signs on the front nine all in great shape...and that's where it ends!

Cons:

The back nine is hard...i mean really hard...several of the holes are not marked and there are literally no fairways..One hole shoots across the lake and has the potential to be one of the most scenic holes in the area but it's quickly ruined when you get to the other side and there is underbrush and really no safe place to land....hole 16 is absurd,...no fairway and little pine trees everywhere...there is no place to even think about getting a clean shot...if the back nine were cleared and marked then this course would be so much better.

Other Thoughts:

I am thankful to Scott and Gary (2 Locals) who showed us around the back nine once we couldn't find hole 12 (no sign) this is really a fun course on the front nine and gets very very hard on the back...it has a ton of potential is really could be one of the best around.

Well manicured on most holes.

Cons:

Who made up this back nine? It is one of the toughest back nines in our area.
I didn't like it but I respected it enough to want to play it again. The signs on the back nine were missing and getting to the next tee was tough on a couple of holes. Rocks for a landing area on 14. Lake water stunk to high heaven. Don't bring floaters, just cheap dx's cause you wouldn't want these discs if they landed in this water. Pheeeewwww!

Other Thoughts:

While this was a dichotomy in terms of beauty and the beast, leaving Number 9 pin I couldn't help but think, :"I am already up three strokes and now I have to walk across this damn road.":
Why this course is rated at only two discs is wrong. This one is at least a three and probably a 3 and 1/2. If you are in the area, at least play this back nine.

Acquired Taste 2+ years drive by

Pros:

The Parisians.... (parisites?) are very friendly. The front nine of the course is fairly well laid out with a nice ace chance on hole 1. From there is goes back into the woods. Hole 12 is a simple but great hole involving a toss of about 200 feet over a lake.

One thing thatis overlooked about this ourse is the variety and risk/reward. There are sooo many different shots to be attempted on this course. At the same time, anyone can get by with just a decent backhand/forehand. There is also now a map at the tee for hole 1 that has an overview of the entire course.

Cons:

Some of the local kids have been vandalizing signs. It's a shame too because they were very nice. The back 9 is just not beginner friendly at all. There are some definite risk/reward scenarios, but it's still hard.

Other Thoughts:

This course grows on me every time I play it. The shot selection is huge, and that's what makes this a good course. While the back 9 is a bit of an adventure.... there are paths that can be found after playing the course a time or two. The back 9 is somewhat of an acquired taste. It just takes a couple times to really understand the lines. Food and stuff is right down the road so it's fairly convenient

Solid mix and challenging. 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 16, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

*Updated review* (first played 1/2/09)

This 18 hole course offers a decent challenge with a great variety of holes and requires several types of shots. I enjoy a course with a mix of open and wooded holes as well as some water hazards thrown in and this one does not disappoint. There is also a good variety of hole length and a tiny bit of elevation, too. The concrete tees are excellent and baskets are in good shape.

Every hole is unique and offers its own challenges. Risk/reward comes to mind on many tees, and almost every hole there is a good chance you will gain or lose strokes against your opponent. There are several holes where you have to work hard for a 3 and feel good about it if you get one. Water hazards in the form of a creek on the front and a pond on the back do come into play. #12 across the pond is a nice over the water hole!

There is plenty of parking. Restrooms are available (and were open in winter!).

Cons:

The first time I played here a couple years ago was when this course was new, and a big con was the fairways, but time and work has solved that problem, which is always good to see a course improve.

However, there are still some. The tee signs are the most obvious, though really nice (and it looks as if they are already on the second set), there has been much vandalism done to them, which is really too bad. Navigation is not too bad, and there is now a map at the kiosk, and a map on this site, but direction signs and better paths to lead first timers to the next tee could be helpful in a few spots. (Often times on the front the closest tee you see is not the next one.)

The park roads and walking path can get in the way on the front 9. There are some swampy areas on the back (I assume only after a rain.)

This course is really out the way to get to from anywhere.

Other Thoughts:

I really like this course- it is not perfect, but the holes themselves make for a good round. However, for me it is just too far out of the way to play as often as I would like. I do recommend this course if you are in the area, or if you don't mind a little bit of a drive off of I-40 between Memphis and Nashville. (But most people are not going to be anywhere near this area.) Locals are lucky to have a course of this caliber.

Park at the mini Eiffel tower. (It is Paris!) Front 9 is a loop on one side of the road. Cross the road by #1's basket to get to the back 9.

Pros:

After an initial short downhill 'Ace' possibility hole, the course turns and travels through woods. The fairways are clearly seen, and this is an entertaining course. Hole 12 features a carry over a sizeable lake, and hole 16 runs closely along its other bank. The back nine is definitely harder than the front, so be prepared when crossing the road. The parks department has continued to improve this course adding benches and other additions.

Cons:

It's a very new course. The back nine hasn't received tons of play, so it's still a bit 'green'.

Other Thoughts:

This course is my home course, and I'm very proud to have it in Paris. I would definitely recommend it.

Back nine 2+ years drive by

Cons:

Lost my xcliber in pond! :(

Other Thoughts:

All in general the course is excellent I like a tuff course. The front 9 is a breeze. The first hole is seriously a teaser. Once you get to the back nine it is difficult, alot of time you couldn't see the pin until your second or third stroke or you have a fareway three feet wide next to water (hole 16).

What fairways? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 18, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course is challenging and offers a variety of shots. Some holes are technical and others are wide open.

Cons:

Some of the holes are not the best and don't always have clearly defined fairways, mainly because it has been poorly maintained. Ones that come to mind are 16 and 17. Hole 16 sits right on a hill that slopes down to a pond, and the fairway is not clear. In every group I have played with at least one shot has rolled or bounced into the water, even when it is appeared to be a great shot. Hole 17 is not more then 250 and is always an impressive duece, there just really isn't a clear path to the basket. Hole 14 is also difficult to locate from the tee, it sits on the opposite hill among a grove of pine tress (good to have a spotter here).

Other Thoughts:

If you are going to play a tournament here I would highly advice at least walking the course first since there are many blind tee shots.
There has also been a great deal of vandalism to tee signs throughout the course, so some are missing.

Pros:

First hole is terrific, an ace run of about 250' from a hilltop.

Other Thoughts:

Par is 31 for 9 holes. Great variety of shots. Holes 4 and 9 are incredibly narrow.
