Pros:
Fewell is the ultimate pitch and putt course. Only 1 hole is over 200 feet. And, that's what makes it fun.
- Leave the bag in the car. Seriously, if you bring a bag, it will slow you down on this course. You're much better carrying a couple putters/mid-ranges. You only need more discs if you're emptying the bag for a cubby ace.
- 9 baskets, dual tees make it 18. 2nd set of tees at least give some challenge. And by challenge, I mean, you'll actually have to do a little work for birdies.
- #3 /12 is the toughest hole simply because it's the longest layout. A sneaky tough one is #16 as you're throwing a blind, downhill dogleg right layout. Be prepared to run to follow the disc's flight especially if you go long or right.
- #2 is the best hole. It's a simple downhill shot. As is the case with most holes, you can take multiple routes to the basket as you're throwing around any number of trees.
- Birdies galore on this course, especially on the short layout. You can take aim for the basket on every hole, making plenty of ace runs. You shouldn't be penalized too much for overaggressive play. Barring bad bounces off trees, or missed putts, shouldn't see many, if any, bogeys on a scorecard.
- Quick, easy rounds. Played 36 holes in under an hour.
- Great course for kids and beginners. Play it Again is 5 minutes down Cherry Road. Pick up a couple of putters and mids, and introduce new people to the game.
- Nice, little neighborhood park. There's a nice playground, walking trails and tennis courts here. Good course to practice your short game on.
Cons:
Baskets are in poor shape. Several are dented and crooked. Natural, silver color makes them hard to spot, especially in the shadows.
- Poor signage. Holes are marked with simple pavers in the ground. For first timers, navigation can be WAY more complicated than it needs to be. For a first time player, it's not hyberbole to say you could spend more time searching for the correct tee pads, especially in the Fall/Winter when leaves are on the ground than it would take to play the course.
- Dirt tee pads. Not a major issue because run-ups aren't needed for short shots.
- Course is cramped. From the long tees, holes do begin overlapping. If the course/park is crowded, could pose a real issue.
- There is a higher than expected lost disc factor for such a short course. Throwing blind on #7, a disc could easily take a bad bounce off a tree or branch and sail away. There's also thick stuff on the right of #6 &7, plus some thick stuff that comes into play on #8.
Other Thoughts:
- For such a simple, low maintenance course, Fewell has always been a fun course. It's way better than it should be when you consider how simple and cramped this layout is. You gotta enjoy birdies no matter how easy the course.
- Even with so many school courses in Rock Hill, this is still the best of the nine-holers. Maybe I'm biased towards the OG, but I'm fond of it.
- Since the first time I played here more than a decade ago, I've always thought this is the perfect course to have across the street from your house. If you lived in any of the homes across the street from the park, you know you'd be here all the time.
- If you played Fewell a lot, I'm curious what's a realistic best 9-hole score. From the short tees, is 15 possible - 3 aces, 6 birdies. 16? Any round with more than one or two pars seems like a poor round.
- It's a good course to use as a warm up before tackling Winthrop Gold. Or a good pick me up after a rough round. Other than that, or if you don't live nearby, you don't need to go out of your way to play.
- Perfect course for an ace race, skins match, one-disc challenge or other type of games to play.
