Pros:
+ Decent mix of Open, Somewhat Treed, and Very Treed holes
+ Navigation made possible with Map (near 1st tee) and arrows at the base of each target
+ Tees and Baskets were in great condition
+ Beautiful views of surrounding mountains
Cons:
- Practically zero elevation change
- Long walk from holes 1-6 to 7-18
- Multi Use Area...you have to be aware of hikers, bikers, dog walkers, etc.
Other Thoughts:
Overall this course is well worth a stop if you're in the area, but it's not much of a destination. Durango is a neat little college/ski town and this course fits perfectly in that setting. It's relatively quick & fun to play, and not too punishing...also not a championship-level course, though.
The mix of of hole difficulty is decent, but they go in order from easiest to hardest. 1-6 are wide open and pretty short. The middle holes gradually get more and more trees, length, etc., ending with 17 and 18 that are tight tunnel shots. I've never played a course that gets harder and harder like that; typically the mix is more random.
Really, it's like holes 1-6 are a warm up/ace race/beginner course, and holes 7-18 are a more challenging course for all skill levels. The long walk between 1-6 and 7-18 reinforces this impression.
This course is set on a very flat piece of land that's surrounded on all sides by hilly, rugged terrain. For that reason, the lack of elevation change on the course itself is weirdly disappointing.
