Horsenden Hill

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 28, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

-- Decent land with trees and elevation. No water. Trees are moderately well used, and the elevation is well used.
-- Quality baskets: Latitude 64 Pro.
-- Course map on site, but it is not accurate. It appears a major redesign has occurred.
-- Restroom on site, and discs are available for rent, but the clubhouse was locked when I was there on a Friday afternoon.
-- Best holes: 6 is about 200 feet with an open fairway and the basket in a stand of trees just right of the fairway. The No. 10 basket sits at the edge of a hill with drop-offs just a few feet left and 20 feet behind the basket. No. 11 is downhill with a line of trees right, other holes left and a thick line of trees 20 feet past the basket. Twelve is 262 feet RHFH around a line of bushes. A large trees sits just about the corner, about 100 feet from the basket.
-- No. 13 green offers a beautiful view of the London skyline.
-- Trash cans are appropriately located.

Cons:

-- Shares space with a footgolf course. Disc golf holes tend to follow the footgolf fairways, so this is an open course.
-- Tee signs look nice, but many hole distances are WAY off. Number 4 is listed as 121 meters (397 feet). It's less than 80 meters. No. 9 is downhill and listed as 140 meters. It's actually less than half of that length. Eleven is listed as 361 feet, but is only 308. Seventeen is listed as 92 feet; it's about 450 feet.
-- Navigation. For such an open course, this is unusual. Following the mowed paths helps, but you've got some issues: Long walk 4-5. There are helpful signs, but they direct you through most of No. 12. The alternative is to backtrack down the 4 fairway. The walk 7-8 is also long and has a split in the path, leaving you to decide which way to go. And 8-9 requires you to walk up the 9 fairway from basket to T.
-- Rough is just that. It's thick and full of stickers. Disc loss potential is medium.
-- No seating at the tees, but there are a couple of benches as you make your way around the course.

Other Thoughts:

-- Pay to play. It's £8 for 9 holes, £12 for 18 holes or £20 for a day pass. Under 16 is slightly cheaper. Definitely not a good value. When I played early on a Friday afternoon, no one was in the clubhouse, but there was a note taped to the door with a phone number.

Short open course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 6, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Great course for beginners. I played this course as part of a one disc (fuse) introductory event and shot -7 playing blind, with alot of true beginners shooting just over par. Considering the prevalence of more advanced level courses in the UK I see this as a plus!
-Great use of elevation. The property is called Horsenden Hill for a reason, there's a good use of drop-offs, false fronts and inclines to create challenge.
-Relatively easy to navigate, well signposted and interacts well with the other activities on site.
-Good facilities. Bathrooms, clubhouse and parking are all near holes 1, as is a warm up area.
-Good view if you like city scapes, holes near the top of the hill overlook Wembley stadium.
-Some memorable holes. Hole 17 is a massively downhill 500ft par 4 that feels very attackable and is alot of fun to throw.

Cons:

-Very open. It's part of what makes it so inviting but also one or two wooded holes wouldn't go amiss.
-It isn't the best value for money. At £12 a round it's pretty extortionate for what it is. Additionally, definitely expect to have to pay extra if you're playing an event there and want to stay longer.
-Despite paying don't expect to have the course to yourself. Dog walkers and and ramblers like to roam the fairways and there are entrances all around the property. Spotters are advised.

Other Thoughts:

The course seems to be well supported by the business, it's just the value that puts me off going back there in terms of planning a trip. Especially with Lloyd Park available in London I'd rather make the trip over there instead going purely as a disc golfer. If I was planning a family trip, or taking friends, where money isn't an object this place would fit the bill.
