Hello Mississippi 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 6, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.802 Rating) An open university grounds layout needing some more development.
- RECREATIONAL FRIENDLY - At 4,665 feet, and with generally painless obstacles, newer thru recreational players will enjoy this course. The hazards are minimal with a couple very small creeks/ditches coming into play on a few shots and a couple areas with moderate overgrowth. The odds of losing a disc here is very low. There are some short technical plays and a few wide open bomber holes for those that max out at 350.
- NAVIGATION - Thank you to the kind soul who made a very accurate map and uploaded it to DCGR. On location I'd call the navigation below average. No directional cues and no next tee info on the hole signage. However, the online map saved me every time.
- MAINTENANCE - The grounds were in great condition like most university settings. Mowed grass throughout. Little to no overgrowth. No trash or branches lying on the ground.
- CHAINS - Yeah DISCatchers.
- SIGNAGE - Adequate tee signage for this style of course.
- LOCATION - The only game in town for the locals. It seems like the university does not shun outsiders and that's a major bonus for those that live nearby.

Cons:

A lackluster 18 holes but not horrible by any means.
- LACK OF CHALLENGE - Although I played horrible in the cold (25 F), having played so many similar type courses I know ICC Indian plays easier than what I shot per my skill level. Way too many open plays where the basket can be attacked from every angle. There are a few moderately wooded holes toward the end of the layout, but they are all short. Shot shaping is really not much of a requirement here. Being able to bomb 400 shots also isn't a requirement except on one hole. I figure 900 rated players should average 2 or 3 down and 950 rated played should average 8-10 down.
- TEES AREA - As of this review, they were all grass and without a defined throwing line. In addition, 70% of the tees are out in the sun.
- CHARACTER - In addition to a sub-par teeing experience, ICC lacks a lot of the items seen at established courses. Missing items include; seating, trash cans, course map, practice basket, multi tees, alternate basket placements, shelter and restrooms. The course does have a posting at one stating the rules of the game and sport etiquette and also has tee signage.
- SAFETY HAZARDS - Some university roads and pathways come into play on several holes. Holes (8) and (9) play around a tennis court. Hole (13) plays around a fenced off utility water pump area and near some parking.
- UNIQUENESS - Below average. Way too many light obstacle to open plays to please veteran players. Most of the holes are on the shorter side as well with only two holes over 320 feet. Generally speaking, no water is in play, but there are a couple of dry washes cutting threw the layout.
- ELEVATION - On my drive up to parking lot near tee (1), I was able to scope out a few holes. Nothing but flat lands. This is true for most of the layout except for the stretch of holes (4-7). Hole (5) is actually a really fun blind play over a small ridge. (7) is about a 20 foot down play.
- DISCONTINUITY - No gaps over 200 feet between holes. However (18) ends a good 500 feet away from the parking lot.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - A slightly below average setting. There are numerous made man elements in view and in play. The best natural aspect of this course doesn't begin until hole (15) where the last four holes play around a moderately wooded pine tree canopy.
- WIND - Due to the lack of trees, wind will likely be an issue.

Other Thoughts:

The first course I ever played in Mississippi on the beginning of a five course Mississippi day trip. The course has some nice elements to it, but ICC is not on its way to win any awards anytime soon. It's probably worth a look see for nearby Tupelo residents one time. However, they'll soon realize that their hometown courses rock compared to this one.
- TIME PLAY - I finished in just over an hour solo and I was photographing the site. There are however a couple 150 foot walks between some holes and solo first timers will likely do 5 to 10 minutes worth of recon. Figure a four sum should play this one in about 2 to 2.5 hours.

Another Community College DGC that could be much more... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 30, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Excellent use of available elevation
-Holes #4 and #5 were unique and memorable
-Every hole had tee markers (except #3) and numbered pins
-Great flow to the course navigation was easy once we found Hole #1

Cons:

-No benches or trash cans
-Tee markers only had faded numbers, no other info
-Mostly flat with the exception of Holes 4-7
-Hole #13 throws over a road that is an entrance to the school

Other Thoughts:

Very typical Community College DGC. The course itself doesn't look like it gets much traffic or maintenance. The grounds are well tended and grass around the tees and baskets is kept short along with the fairways.
A course for beginners or intermediate players looking for a good practice course, but if you want a challenge or course with more accommodations head west to Tupelo for some higher rated courses.

course for beginners 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 24, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great course designed for beginners to get them introduced to disc golf. Easy to shoot -4 to -8 for amateur players. The fairway grass is always cut short. Great location.

Cons:

Other than the 1st & 2nd holes, all holes are relatively short. No tee pads. No tee box on hole 3 (play it by the light pole).

Other Thoughts:

The 3rd hole could be played as a par 4. Due to construction in the past couple years around the course, the signs displaying the hole number, length, and description were removed. They should be replaced by the summer.

Average course at best 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 10, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Pretty open course with the only real distance throws on the first couple of holes.

Cons:

Not too challenging. First tee box was the only one with distance marked. Every other hole was simply numbered with paint. Couldn't even find the #3 tee box. No post or nothing!!! Didn't see any bathrooms nearby and there were also no benches or trash receptacles.

Other Thoughts:

If you live nearby and just need to get you disc golf "fix", then yeah I guess it would be worth playing. As far as driving out of your way to play it, don't bother.

Nice college campus course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

New Innova DISCatcher baskets.

Course starts off open, first hole is 300' straight shot over a ditch which is about 8' in front of the basket.

From there you go to hole # 2 which is what I think is the most challenging. It's about a ~350' shot down a tree line and across the same ditch you throw over on hole one, basket is tucked up under the big tree by toward the parking lot.

From there on out the average hole length is around 280' or so, some more, some less.

Lots of OB, weather it be throwing over a road, parking lot, bridge, enclosed fence, or tennis court.

Lots of birdie oppertunities. When you get to the back stretch around # 15 or so there are some tall pines you have to throw around and through, can get challenging but also all birdie holes.

I think there was some shade almost on every tee one could rest under. Might want to take your stool if playing with a group.

Cons:

Tee pads are natural, they also aren't marked on either left or right side of the tee sign.

Tee sign on hole # 1 is the only one with an actual sign and distance. Looks like vandals tore all the others off and now just the number is painted on where the distance/route sign would be.

The ground and fairways were really wet with standing water so might not want to play if it's rained lately.

Didn't see any bathrooms around, nor were there any benches to rest on.

Other Thoughts:

Good course all around. Grass was nicely mowed and looks like it's pretty well taken care of except for the tee signs.

This course is going to be the most fun for the regular AM player, but a fun course for all to enjoy.

I would recommend stopping to play this course if on the way to Tupelo or Birmingham.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 1, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a fairly short, mostly open course located on a community college campus. The course has nice yellow DISCatcher baskets, but the chains are rusted on some of them. You can see the big sign with the disc golf rules and etiquette from the parking lot which signals where to start. From there, each basket has the hole number and there are good tee signs, so navigation is easy and intuitive.

Design wise, it is strictly an amateur level course with only one set of tees and pin locations. It is mostly open, with well placed tees and baskets forcing certain shots around trees and other obstacles on most of the holes. A solid course for players around the skill level in which it was designed.

Cons:

The course can get very muddy in some places after a lot of rain. There are no benches and the tee pads are natural, so several of these were also nice and muddy. Personally, from the perspective of an experienced player, I felt a little more could be done with the design, as some of the holes on the back half were repetitive and other holes were just kind of there for transition purposes.

Other Thoughts:

Having attended college here before there was a course, I am familiar with the amount of land they had to work with and who designed the course. If they had some kind of tee pads, I would probably up my rating another half a disc. Overall, it is a fun little course that is great for its intents and purposes: to introduce disc golf to college kids. If this sounds like your kind of course or if you are just passing through, then I would say it is worth playing. However, if you are an experienced player traveling and seeking out good courses to play, you would probably be better served by going elsewhere.
