Lake Ellis

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 5, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Beautiful view of the lake, which is in play to some degree on 10 of the 18 holes. You've got a full water carry on No. 9 (489/690). The tee signs shows a tee shot that stays left/short of the lake and clearing the water on the second throw. Five holes have you throwing at the water, with the basket 15-30 feet from the water. Several other holes have water bordering a fairway.
- Two tee pads per hole.
- Most pads are natural; a couple are paver stones, and a couple tee from existing asphalt or concrete.
- Prodigy T1 baskets in good shape.
- Map at parking lot.
- Plays clockwise around the lake, so navigation is pretty simple.
- Beautiful tee signs with par, map, distance from long and short tees and next tee indicator. A couple of signs have come off of their posts, but those are sitting on the ground near the post.
- Tees are only marked by red (short) or blue (long) post in the ground. In a couple of instances, it appears a third tee has been added. In those instances, the red tee is considerably shorter than the sign indicates. However, a red line on the ground (or asphalt) is at the distance indicated on the tee sign.
- Three par 4s and a par 5 (630/723) through trees and slightly uphill to finish the round.
- Starts boring but quickly improves. No. 1 is about 375 from the long tee across an open field. It's basically a couple of throws to get you to the good stuff. Two is RHBH hyzer blind and slightly uphill around bushes. Three through five basically play down toward the water, back up, and down again. Six and seven move away from the lake and are somewhat wooded holes. Eight (647 feet from the long tee) is the first par 4 and plays between the lake right and trees left. It's a pretty wide fairway. Nine is the water carry and is another par 4. Ten is short and slightly uphill to an elevated basket. Eleven is the final par 4 and plays over a small inlet from the lake before going uphill and crossing the road. Twelve through 16 all throw at the water except 13, which has water right. Seventeen is a short shot through some trees with a small OB fenced area just right of the basket.

Cons:

- The long walk from 11 to 12 takes you right past the Chatom Community Center. I assume restrooms and water are inside, but I did not check.
- Walking path comes into play on holes 2, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 18. And there are grills and picnic tables around the lake that also could impact some holes.

Other Thoughts:

- You end on the other side of the parking lot from No. 1.
- It's in a multi-use park that includes softball fields. Only hole 18 plays near those fields, but you are going to encounter people using the park for other purposes at some point.

Hidden gem

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 29, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very beautiful park. 2 tees for each hole. Water in play on several holes. Great views of the lake. Lots of elevation used. Good mix of holes. Long and short. A few open around the water. Uphill. Downhill. Left and right turns. 3 par 4's and a par 5. Nice prodigy baskets. navigation easy. Plays around the lake. Course map at beginning of course. Nice signs on the long tees with the short tee info.

Cons:

Dirt tee pads but in good shape. Multi use park but not at all crowded when we were there. A bit off the beaten path ( maybe not a con)

Other Thoughts:

This course was a very pleasant surprise. No reviews on this site and not much info. One of the more beautiful settings for a course I've ever seen. Course plays around a lake with fabulous views all around. Not heavily wooded but plenty of trees. Water in play but no long forced carries and very fair.
There are bathrooms in the park that I assume would be open but didn't check. This course is definitely in my personal top 10.
