Pros:
Dual concrete tees (White & Blue) and dual DISCatcher 28s (Red & Gold/Yellow) on Lake Sumter State College campus, which is open to the public during daylight hours. Most of the course is carved out of a thick, 20 acre stand of oaks, pines, palms and Palmettos.
7 par 4s. The dual/dual set up caters to 4 different skill levels. White to Red is very forgiving, for beginners. Blue to Gold will challenge an advanced to Pro-level player.
A dozen of the holes start or finish near the parking lot, which allows someone to play a hole or two between classes and should be a bit safer by bringing players back toward the open parking lot.
Many holes have multiple fairways and disparate tee & pin positions for maximum variety.
Some oddly shaped tee pads, which accommodate diverse angles to both pins.
Plenty of directional arrows under select baskets and on 4"x4" posts for easier navigation. Well marked transition paths. Good flow. Some wooded areas are lined with logs to better define the fairways & transition paths for the player and the maintenance staff.
Mostly flat with good use of the little elevation changes there are.
Restrooms & water fountains in Math & Sciences building. (normally open, but currently closed due to Covid 19) Ample parking for players and spectators.
Friendly security staff.
Cons:
NEWLY installed! Still has some rough-edges. (Vines, sticks & stumps)
#11 tees are still rubber mats (GOOD rubber mats. But not concrete) as of 03-10-21.
Houses to the right (north) of fairways 14, 15 & 16 are in no danger of being hit, but signs may be placed to reduce noise on these holes.
Although holes 3, 4 & 16 are near water, it rarely comes into play for safety reasons.
An errant shot on #8 Blue to Gold stands a minor chance of going into a yard. But pretty unlikely.
Some stinging nettle can be found on #7 near tees.
Gopher tortoise burrows will be staked with ribbons. (Take casual relief!!)
No drinking water on the course. Mosquitoes can get bad. Chiggers & ticks have been found there as well.
No shaded parking near tees 1 and 10.
Practice basket not yet installed.
Longish walks from #3 to #4, 6-7, 8G-9W.
Other Thoughts:
Course #5 of 6 on the Lake County Disc Golf Trail, The LakeHawk disc golf course (par 61) was designed by World Champion Disc Golf Design, (AKA: 3x PDGA World Champion Gregg Hosfeld. Florida's only disc golf course Master Designer) and produced by the Florida Disc Golf Foundation and the Lake County Economic Development and Sports Tourism dept.
Several bird species, such as sand hill cranes, hawks & barred owls can be seen in and around the course. Areas where endangered sand skinks were found were left undisturbed.
The course has a good mix of shot-shaping and places a premium on accuracy and placement shots to landing zones on the par 4s.
This course has the potential to spoon-feed newbies and develop their game into collegiate contenders.
Absolutely worth the trip. Play ALL FOUR configurations!!
