It's not bad 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 15, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Course is straightforward for the most part. Has two sets of pads and mach pins, all par threes and none are over 400'. An intermediate player would be furious if they don't shoot under par. Rec players could expect to shoot under par most of the time. It's good beginner practice and a great way to advertise the game. The course kiosk is visible from the parking lot, which is also nice.

-It's a bit of a skill level tease in the beginning. A nice one; the first two holes are both great! Both of them are over 300' and play downhill. The first hole is a good way down there. Probably thirty to thirty-five feet below the pad. It's 359' from the long pad and just under 300' from the short, so it's longer but plays a lot less. 359' and 289' are not always easy to reach, but it's a little easier to reach on this hole.

-#2 is the best hole on the course. It's a wonderful downhill hole. This is the hardest hole on the course (and the longest), but its very fair and very fun to throw on. Brilliantly designed. Downhill and through a gap between pine trees. Fairway turns a good bit to the left. Just clearing the gap without any tree hits would be a great shot. It's a challenge to hit, but its reachable. If you miss, you'll be fighting for par. You could expect plenty of fours even in the pro division.

-I think the whole front nine is well designed. It gets shorter after the first two holes, but it's still some good casual disc golf. #5 is another challenging hole if you play the longs. You have to throw through a few small gaps and past a tree with a large limbspan. #6 and #7 are both technical ace runs. #6 is a pretty good ace opportunity. Straight ahead, but favors a slight right to left turn. #7 is another great hole. 216'. So it's short but pretty tough considering the fact that it's more open from the tee pad and you are throwing into the mouth of the woods. Fairway is pretty wide but if you miss, you'll have to think about your pitch out. I really liked this hole. The other holes on the front are all good too.

-The view of the river is very nice too. You really get to see it on hole two.

-Most holes are aceable for an average competitive player. The really short holes in the woods are pretty weird, but they can be aced as well. Ends with a VERY aceable hole eighteen. This is the "must get" at Loudon Municipal. 120', uphill and open.

Cons:

-The main problem has been mentioned by almost everyone, but I recognized it right when I got here. I actually had a hard time figuring out which tee pad was #1 and where the basket was. You are throwing in hole ten's fairway and are extremely close to hole eighteen's basket. This being said, hole ten is another fun straight downhill shot so the fact that #1 and #10 cross each other is kind of justified. Nonetheless, navigation very well could confuse you. Throw to the basket on the left side on hole #1. And the basket you see in front of #1's pad is not a practice basket. It's #18................

Same goes for holes five and six. The first basket you'll see on #5 will more than likely be the basket for #6. The basket for #5 is out in the open and slightly to the left. The one straight ahead of #5's tee pad is hole #6.

-Some tee signs are missing. Not all but some on the front nine and the one on #13 is missing.

-I kind of wish that more space was available. Once you get to hole thirteen the course becomes pretty silly. #13 is 99' long. I suppose it's solid upshot practice, it's the only hole you can throw a spike hyzer on (over the woods), and it's likely the riskiest 99' you'll ever play. The gap is tight and there's no real line after that. You could get a 2, 3, or 4 on this hole. It's really weird. Whatever you decide to do on this hole is like investing into a unicorn company. You'll either get a nice return and make a birdie, or you'll get unlucky and get a negative return (a bogey). You'll feel good about a birdie and will be devastated with a bogey. And a par wouldn't be all that bad. #15 is pretty goofy too. 98' and plays as a jump putt in the woods. Many trees, but not as corny as #13.................

-This all being said, if there was more land available, then we probably wouldn't be seeing holes #13-16. All are under 150'. Wasn't fond of #18 either. Was a filler finisher. Land restrictions are a con. It isn't anyone's fault (I don't mean that at all). I just find it disappointing that the last third of the course is a let down when there's more land at this place that could potentially be used.

Other Thoughts:

-If you're looking for a nice quiet walk near the river and through some woods, you might like this place. I do not think that the course is great, but I don't think that it's bad either. I liked the front nine. I liked hole ten. Holes eleven and twelve were pretty solid too. Then the course changed its look. There is so little space between #1 and #12 for there to be six holes. But there are, and the only decent one is #17. I think there needs to be a few changes made on the final six holes. Not to mention, I think there was a sign on #13's pad that said "Walking trail."

-A bunch of hundred footers kind of damaged the overall look of this course. But it's an okay course and has some well designed holes. The walk through itself is really nice and makes the overall experience pretty enjoyable.

-This is the only course in the town of Loudon so if you live here and get/got hooked on the game, go make the drive to Knoxville.

Master Blaster Runs Barter-town 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 20, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.835 Rating) A scenic 18 holer that should have been 9. It should be able to offer a new course designer knowledge on what not to do.
- RAW BEAUTY - If it wasn't for this nice landscape, I may have considered giving the course a 1.5 or even a 1.0 disc rating. Although several shots on the back 9 are disappointingly short, they play threw some really beautiful wooded terrain. The front side is a little more park style, but it's still pleasant there as well. Very few manmade structures in view the entire round, except by (1, 9, 10 and 18).
- ACEABILITY - A skilled player that throws the front tees might throw one into the chains every ten to fifteen rounds. I played the back tees and I still think the music would be heard 2 or 3 times more often than a normal course.
- FORGIVENESS - Although there are some substantial overgrown areas, most of the course is forgiving to bad throws. The odds of losing a disc is low and the course is somewhat beginner friendly.
- ELEVATION - A couple nice 40 foot down plays on (1) and (10).
- QUICK PLAY - 67 minutes exactly for my quick two-some. Figure on 45 minutes for a quick bagger.

Cons:

Likely designed by a comedian who later said that the idea was a joke after seeing it get built.
- DESIGN - The 18 hole course is jammed into a space that might be able to effectively house 9 good holes. To make up for the small space, multiple tees were installed at most holes to beat home the fact that this is Thunderdome and Master Blaster runs Barter-town. Throwing this layout with 18 groups on it would be along the lines of playing in an active war zone. The short tee on (12) is the worst being 10 feet from basket (11). (18s) basket could have discs buzzing over top from three different directions. As for the tee surfaces on the front 9, whoops. I guess the tee maker forgot his shovel and level that day and decided to construct them along the natural slope. Thankfully this was rectified for the second 9 when it went in a few years later. Holes (13) thru (15) are a joke. GMcAtee was laughing and looking down fairway as I approached tee (13). Then I turned and saw a 99-foot poke and hope shot... oh joy. To my dismay, (14) and (15) were also a pair of lunacy dinkers as well. (16) and (17) were ok chip shots, but (18) was an excellent last chance to throw a grenade up to the unsuspecting disc golfers at tees (1) and (10). I could go on, but I decided to go easy on it for now.
- LACK OF CHALLENGE - We decided to play the "back" Blue tees cause we wanted to see what kind of lickin that a beastly 3,900 foot 18 hole course could dish out. To no surprise, little challenge. Hole (2) was the only difficult shot. Rec players should have two thirds of them birdied in 3 or 4 rounds. The front tees average just over 150 feet per hole.
- MISSED OPPORTUNITIES - The heavy woods were not effectively utilized and were built down walking paths. The stream on the property does not come into play.
- POISON IVY - It was present in many spots between (13) and (17). I don't ever take off rating points for this.
- NAVIGATION - Faded course map on the way to tee (1). I'd give its usefulness about another year. Lots of missing and faded tee signs. I don't recall any navigational cues although many of the next tees are within tripping distance. Overall doable, but frustrating in spots.
- CHAINS - Not top-of-the-line baskets. In addition, they mounted a hole number plate on the basket pole in the chains. GMcAtee lost three strokes from hitting the darn thing square.
- VARIETY - Too many short holes, poor use of the woods, no use of the creek and too park style.
- TERRAIN - For those with walking issues, not the best choice. Holes (1) and (10) play down a steep slope. These two holes will be fun holes for everyone else.
- PARKING - The parking lot is a bit of a walk to the first tee.

Other Thoughts:

I was wondering how a course with 18 holes, duel tees and pleasant course pictures on DGCR could be rated so low. Well then I played it, and realized how much was done horribly wrong. Loudon barely delivers the feeling of a disc golf experience. Similar to the experience of eating kale for food. I could not recommend this course to anyone other than to those that live within 10 minutes.
- RE-EVALUATION - I decided to give the course another look and re-scored it from scratch 18 months later. I thought I was unreasonably harsh on a couple aspects and didn't feel it fit in with my other 1.5 rated courses and hence this revision. Through my re-analysis, I decided to bump it up 2 tenths of a point for a low 2.0 course. The design is the biggest flaw imo, and that's a very subjective thing to evaluate.

Lovely Little Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 21, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Scenic executive course requiring most of the shots of longer courses, only shorter. Mix of elevation change, open, and tight (though miniature) wooded chip shots. The short total lengths makes for a quick round when you haven't much time.

Cons:

Long arms can't show their stuff, but rather there's enough variety to force concentration on your short game.

Other Thoughts:

Not just a pitch n' putt. Terrain, trees, and some dense edges can come into play as one inevitably goes bird hunting.

Putters preferred 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 28, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tucked away at the back of a city park, the Loudon Municipal Park DGC offers an opportunity for beginners and families to learn the game of disc golf on a lovely piece of property.

While most of the holes are short - most of the holes are less than 200 feet - several of the holes make decent use of elevation. And the course appears to be mowed frequently and well-maintained.

Cons:

Too many holes; too little room.

The baskets feature a single row of chains.

Navigation is a little tricky; with so many teepads and baskets visible, correctly selecting the next hole isn't a given.

The wooded holes (#13 through #17) are very tight and very short. Like 100 feet long.

Other Thoughts:

This park course has shoehorned too many holes into too small of an area, giving it a mini-golf feel. I speculate that there aren't many occasions when several disc golf groups are on the course concurrently. But the holes aren't that well designed and anyone beyond a beginner's status can probably leave their drivers in the bag. The holes definitely don't need multiple teepads.

Loudon Municipal Park is a nice, little course where one can practice their putting and attempt ace runs, but there's little here to attract the experienced disc golfer.

Nice all around course, however short 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 16, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good mix of open fields and wooded holes
Baskets are visible from the tee box
Some up hill and down hill shots, as well as flat holes
Not busy at all, you can really take your time and practice a few different shots
Very well maintained, grass was cut very close and allowed for a couple slips from the discs
Good chance for some free love, had a few shots get redirected and almost aced by brushing a tree
The tee boxes are all concrete and half of the course has the option for short or long tees

Cons:

The tee boxes are a little short, but this really fits the course because the holes aren't long
Some holes are way too short, I had to tee off with my putter on 4 holes, and there were times I would use a driver and throw it 30 feet past the basket without much effort
The stretch from 13 through 17 needs some rearranging, way too wooded and the holes are super short

Other Thoughts:

Overall I like this course, I have been playing the sport for a long time and typically like a course with long holes that allow you to drive extra long distances. This course is definitely not that but honestly a really fun course. The holes are short enough that you don't need a super long distance disc, and can get away with a fairway driver and putter in most of the holes, some you just need a putter for. I loved the mix of open spaces and wooded technicalities and really seems like a great course to fine tune certain throws. I had my fiance with me and she really enjoyed playing the long tees where available, seemed just long enough for her to be able to par every one and snag a birdie or two along the way. I made out 8 under but that was just having fun and not olaying like I was in it to win it. I will definitely be back here and loved every hole at this course, except for 13 14 15 and 16. Only have it a 3 star because it seems too short and it's not laid out perfectly, some of the holes cross over each other and if this was a busy park it would be impossible to know when to throw. Luckily there was no one there when I went out and it was a blast.

Too many holes for the space 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 30, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well marked tee signs/pads
Elevation on a few holes
Even though it is in a city park, the course is quite isolated and won't put pedestrians/children/etc. in the way
Short and long tees on ~ half the holes
Good map at the beginning (take a picture)

Cons:

Trapezoidal tee pads felt a short to me
Back 9 (specifically the holes in the trees) aren't well designed

Other Thoughts:

A redesign of the course could really use the space more efficiently and introduce more style/playability. I feel like the the space should accomodate 9-12 holes, not 18. For the majority of the back 9, you really don't need anything but putters.

Nice mix of holes. Open areas as well as wooded areas and
plenty of hills.

Cons:

Some of the holes are very close to others. Hole #10 requires you to throw over the basket for hole #18. Something has happened to some of the signs as they are missing but the post are still there. One of the baskets I think it's #2 has a bent post. I guess someone bent it or could have been a mower..

Locals told me this started as a 9 hole course and the back 9 is fairly new. This is par 3 on all holes and requires some fancy throwing on some. But all in all it is fun.

Pros:

Holes are short - good for beginners.

Cons:

Front nine is so frustrating, never got the back nine.

Other Thoughts:

Had never been to this course, so thought we'd try it out. We are beginners, so we thought this would be a good practice course. Due to recent rains, the creek was almost overflowing, causing us to be swarmed by gnats the entire time - it was miserable. The front nine was so confusing with the poor signage, criss-crossing fairways, etc. that we never got to the back nine. From what I've read, the back may be better - if we happen to be in the area, we may try again.

Needs redesign! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 19, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is located in a nice, multi use park. It's less than two minutes off of I-75, along with several stores and drive throughs.

It's almost always empty, so if quiet solitude is desired....this course fits the bill. One of the best local courses to take beginning disc golfers due to the short nature of it.

Loudon is the only course in the Loudon Co area.

Cons:

Design.

The front nine is cramped together and play on top of one or two other holes. Not a huge problem since this course is always empty. The holes themselves are not that bad in general.

The back nine is simply a horrible waste of space. Holes #10 and #18 play through Hole #1's fairway. Hole #10 - #12 are not as bad as the rest of the back nine as they offer a little distance and other challenges. #13 - #17 are all 98' - 110' long and are located in dense woods, using the old walking path as fairways.

Other Thoughts:

This course could be a lot better if more thought was put into design. I applaud the city of Loudon for adding a disc golf course to this nice park. I sure wish they'd consulted with actual disc golfers or course designer first. The park has plenty of land where longer holes could be used, and where the fairways didn't overlap.

It seems they ponied up for nice baskets and some concrete tees, but totally gave up on design.

Loudon will offer no challenge to anyone with a skill level over intermediate. Some of the front nine can still challenge short throwers or those with little control.

A redesign would help this course out. Until then, it's the best course around to take your kids or beginning golfers.

Short, but fun 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 23, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a fun 9-hole course in a very nice city park. There are 2 sets of tees- long (black) and short (turquoise). There is a good variety of holes here in regards to length and obstacles. Distance ranges from 105' (short #3) to 382' (long #2). Obstacles are hills, rough, a creek, and several trees.

*Update- I came back a year later and was shocked to find this was now an 18 hole course. Many of the new 9 play through the woods about 100' per hole, keeping with the short distance theme- these holes make a nice introduction to technical woods style holes without being long and discouraging. (The holes in the woods share the Pro/Am tee.)

This is a great course for beginners, families, casual players, etc. It does not take very long to play 9 holes, or even 18. The long tees aren't terribly difficult but do offer a little more distance and often a different line to the basket. I really like this course for beginners as it forces people to keep their shots low- many holes play under the tree branches, and on hole #1 where a high shot down the hill will probably result in a lost disc in the rough or creek.

The course is extremely well-signed with hole number and map, a distance sign at each tee, a sign behind the basket to show the basket number, and even a sign in the middle of #2 fairway saying it was a dog leg left! (* see Cons...)

Cons:

There were more signs on this 9-hole course than I have seen on any 18 or 27 hole course. Each hole had 4 signs (a map, short tee, long tee, and basket sign.) The signs were often in the way in front of the tee and the basket signs behind the basket could be in the way if you landed behind the basket. The direction the signs faced was inconsistent pointing all different directions. (Some seem to be placed so you can see them as you approach from the previous hole, but then one of the basket signs was facing backwards so all you could see from the tee was a blank sign- not very helpful!) It was also a bit overwhelming visually to have 35 signs, 18 tees, and 9 baskets in a pretty small area.

*Update- some of the signs on tall poles behind baskets were moved to the basket post itself- this is a much better set-up.

Speaking of a small area, where the holes are good for beginners, the space is not. It is all close together, and if there were a lot of people playing it could be very dangerous.

Design was ok, but 1-3 seem a bit strange. 1 plays down the hill 300' and crosses a gravel ditch, then you walk back up the hill in #1's fairway to 2 which is a 300'+ blind dog leg left where tee shots could hit people on other holes. Then #3 is only 105' from the shorts. It would seem better to have #1 play down without crossing the gravel, #2 to play back up on the other side of the gravel ditch with a dog leg right, and then lengthen #3 to play halfway down the hill. This would make the course much safer, eliminate extra walking, and make #3 a more normal length.

#1 and #10 tees are close to each other and cross lines. #18 (up) is basically a reverse of #10 (down) and dangerous if somebody is playing the other hole.

Other Thoughts:

I had a lot of fun playing this course. Great for beginners, a par 18 course from the shorts for experienced players.

It is not too far off I-75. My main reason for being in this area was the Lost Sea in Sweetwater, which is not too far away. It is a cave tour that features a boat ride on a large underground lake that is home to giant rainbow trout. The Lost Sea is highly recommended if you like to see caves and/or fish!

Swatso's review below is excellent and I agree with everything in it 100%.

Too Much In Too Little 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 19, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Two concrete tees per hole. Abundance of signage.

Cons:

Two concrete tees per hole. Abundance of signage.

Other Thoughts:

Course sits at the back of a multi-use public park. The bulk (baskets 2-7) of the course resides in a small meadow between a plateau containing playing fields and a tree-lined creek. This land stays damp and is evidently an ideal breeding ground for gnats - bring bug spray! Tees 1 & 2 are on the hillside leading down to the meadow, holes 3-5 play in open space, holes 6-7 are amongst the small trees at the bottom of the slope forming an edge of the meadow, hole-8 plays halfway up and across this slope, and hole-9 brings you back on top.

A brief hole-by-hole guide:

#1 (359/289) Downhill initially, then flattening out, open

#2 (382/326) Downhill initially, generous window to hit, then flattening out, little left-turn at end, open

#3 (196/105) Flat, open

#4 (240/175) Flat, open

#5 (275/180) From the far tee, a few small, scattered trees to avoid straight ahead, with a left-turner being more open but need to be kept low. From the near tee, flat, open.

#6 (184/119) From the far tee, low-ceilinged alley early, small left-turn at end. From the near tee, flat, open

#7 (216/159) Initial low ceiling, getting even lower as a late right-turner is needed to reach the basket.

#8 (161) Straight shot slightly up a slope, which is right-to-left, with thick trees on left, scattered bushes/trees on right

#9 (247/157) From the far tee, blind shot over a steep slope directly in front of you - use the two large trees in the background for aiming purposes. The near tee is not aligned towards the basket - aiming 45-degrees over the front right corner of the tee is the direct line. Basket sits on the back left corner of a plateau.

The few-inch thick teepads sit on the ground, so whatever the countour of the land is where the teepad is located is the tilt the teepad itself will have.

Other than single teepad hole-8, there will be four signs at each hole. Each teepad will have its own, very basic (# and distance) sign - unfortunately, these are often located just off the front right corner of the teepad, i.e. precariously close to a RHBH-thrower's natural follow-through. There is also a larger sign, typically near the far tee, that shows the current hole, distances, and other features, but the map on it isn't always oriented from the viewer's perspective. The baskets themselves have no numbers on them, but a 6' pole with a number on it is located a few feet behind the basket.

For beginning players, the distances are appropriate, but there is some cross-fire danger as many of the baskets and tees are near each other. Experienced players should have a birdy fest and some ace runs.
