Pros:
If campuses from any college want to put fun activities around them that can draw in the locals , a few out of towners , and especially the students that attend , then they have to do it right . Miami U of Hamilton took a small tract of land ( I am assuming that they weren't allowed to use the northwest portion of the property ) and made a 9 hole course . Some effort went into installing some pretty good baskets , some good signs and big enough gravel tees . The course is located behind the gym on campus . You might have to park in the street when the gate is down or during school hours . When your bearings are straightened out and you find hole 1 , you will be facing a row of trees that force you to either crank a hard right to left drive around them , or a slight left to right running parallel to the building and dropping down at the very end to the basket which is in view . The next tee , is abnormally long because it is shared with #9's tee ( ? ) I can't see this being a problem as of yet unless disc golf picks up a lot in Hamilton . 2 is the most confused you will be on the course . The tee faces the #8 basket but you have to throw to the left and up an embankment to the correct basket . Rows of trees have been planted to make a tunnel for this shot , a nice touch . #3 is a straight but short level shot that sits under some trees that will only affect your midrange or putter if you throw too high . 4 is a tighter longer tighter shot that stays level until the last 60' ot so , then drops down into the edge of the woods . 5, in the woods is the shortest hole on the course , a 135' putter throw over an open dirt path , basket sitting straightaway slightly downhill . You stay in the woods for 6 , a left to slightly right over that same type of opening on 5 , Fade to the right too soon , and you will hit some brush and be behind trees , stray left and get stuck in heavier brush . 7 would probably be my signature hole if I had to choose on this course . A tight tunnel shot that starts in the woods rolling a little left , then opening up straight to 20' out of the woods to the basket . 8 is a short blind shot left to right where you are throwing to the basket that you originally thought was #2 when you started ( make a note of how deep and where it is when you are on #2 teepad so you don't have to walk down #8 fairway to see where it is again ) . 9 throws back into #1's fairway to a basket protected by the building , the tree row and a small hill in front of it . A fast play that utilizes what elevation the course designer could muster , and a fun round for the newbies , locals and best of all , students . Course flows well and not a lot of walking between holes .
Cons:
Just the specifics . #1. short course offers little challenge to anyone that is considered an every week player . #2. Some of the tee pads or fairway throws could result in someone getting buzzed by an errant throw during the round . #3 . Brush can get greedy with your discs and cost you time trying to look for them or dig them out , especially on blind throws #7 & 8 . No benches or trash cans ( hey , it's a quick 9 holer , so lighten up a bit ) at the holes , so carry in and carry out . #4 maybe the tee signs could be a littler further away from the tee pad . #5 be wary that this course could be muddy after a rain , especially for holes 4-7 .
Other Thoughts:
This is a brand new course , so don't put it down until you get a feel for it and try a round or 2 . This is in no way a destination course or one that you would go too much out of your way for , but one that could test your short game if you are in town for something or combine with another course like Cabin Creek . This is a course that whispers " Play me and enjoy for the next 30 minutes " .
