***9-2-15 Update. Based solely upon the info from Jimpy's review, and the pictures showing off the concrete tees, I have updated my rating from 2 to 2.5.***
I uploaded the map from the the park's site here onto DGCR, but the course has been modified since the map was made. If you follow the map, it's like #9 on the map is now actually #3, only basically played backwards. Then #3-8 become #4-9.
When I was there, the short and long tee signs for #2 were placed at the wrong tees and need to be switched.
The course seems to favor the RHBH player, especially from the short tees. I only played the shorts, but I did observe that the long tees do more than just adding distance. They will definitely change the type of throw needed for many of the holes.
Holes #1, #8 and #9 are all basically wide open, with just #8 being lined by trees/woods on the right side of the fairway. The rest of the holes make interesting use of the trees and woods on sight. None of the holes would qualify as heavily wooded, they do make use of the thinned out treed areas.
Highlights.
#3) Short-ish downhill hole. Plays between a couple trees immediately in front of the tee, across an open area, to a basket in a grove of trees with the entrance guarded by several trees. I hit solid chains on this hole and splashed out.
#6) A very short hole, with the beginning basically open. But the basket sits among some trees, on a "peninsula-like" area, that falls off before, after, and to the left of the basket. This is just a fun little hole.
#7) I don't know when a 40'+ rollaway is really a highlight, but I'll mention it anyway. This basket sits some 25' (10-15' vertically) up on a very steep hill, with a narrow stretch of grass between the bottom of the hill and the woods below. Just take a look at the basket picture to get an idea of the slope. And, when you're pin high, at the bottom of the hill, be sure to get your putt into the chains, and not into the front of the basket. Or you might just turn a good shot at a 2 into a bummer of a 4 really quickly, just like I did.
This is an interesting, little, community park, course. It has a lot of potential if they improve the amenities. The loose gravel tees are the weakest point. Plus replacing the tee signs would help a lot, too.
If you find yourself on I79 between Washington, PA and Pittsburgh, I'd definitely recommend checking it out. It's pretty easy to get to off of the interstate. It's probably not worth a long drive, but it was fun. If the tees and signage are improved this could easily move up to a 3 and become a quality 9 hole course on the South side of the Steel City.
