Destination course in Louisiana

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 4, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

2 sets of cement tee pads per hole
Baskets are still looking new

Cons:

Most of the tee boxes seemed close together. The Red Tee's were not that much shorter than the Blues. Not enough to really make a difference to the average player.

Other Thoughts:

You have 2 courses side by side sharing the same very large parking lot. Hillside starts off to the Right and goes down to the lake for a few holes.

Hillside is in a forest, there are plenty of tree's to hit. But I felt there there were lines to hit to score well. Accuracy is a must to score well.

AND stay on the fairways. The rough is thick and might as well be OB because it's going to take a stroke to get back to the fairway at best.

The course really needs some love. The ground is still rough and has not settled down. There are spots it's hard to get a good footing. Hopefully this will correct it self over time.

There are plenty of shot shaping holes and holes you need to shoot for a landing area to score well.

If you like throwing up and down hills, this course has it although it's not too extreme. But being from Texas, this was a hilly course.

Why is hole 16 666ft?

Then you have hole 18. I think this might be one of the hardest holes I have ever played. Not only is it 1000ft, but you have turns in the fairways you need to navigate. I am not a big arm player, I stayed on the fairway for each shot and managed to bag the 5 and was extremely happy about it. But in all honestly, I can't think of a tougher holes in the 1835 other courses I have played to date.

Would I play here again? oh heck yea. This is a TRUE destination course. Specially when it is next to Lakeside that I think is a better course. On top of that, you can camp at the State Park

And it's less than an hour drive to another Mike Brown course is South Toledo Bend SP with an 18 hole and a 9 hole course.

Pros:

North Toledo bend has two fresh 18 hole courses. I played Hillside first, and thought it is done nicely. Two sets of concrete pads with signs on most, if not all holes. Brand new baskets, and interesting terrain.

The woods are thick. You won't find any wide open airspace, but the fairways are clear to a point that you can play some good, long drives when necessary. There are instances where you have to find a seam, and conking trees is hard to avoid.

There is not a ton of water in play, but why have a course on a lake if you're not going to use it? When it's present, you'll definitely be aware. There are some minor/moderate elevation changes. The slopes that cross the fairway can be cause for concern.

Cons:

The signs of course construction were all over the place. There were heavy tracks from equipment on several holes. Scattered refuse from cases of beer that had been drank decades ago were spread about, exposed in the process of brush clearing.

There were torrential storms there a day or two before my visit. While the course was overall very playable, some of the new teepees didn't handle the weather unscathed. A few, mostly on the back 9 had mud, branches and debris covering them partially, or entirely in one instance.

Being a very new disc golf facility, Im sure a lot of things are still works in progress. I'm guessing that erosion barriers will be inlace around the tee boxes. Hopefully some of the litter will be removed as well.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course that will only improve with time. Very challenging. Par 4 and 5 holes that require some strategy. It's a tough one, especially the first time around, with plenty of blind shots. I can't give detailed hole by hole descriptions. but it has a good mix of everything.

The park is pretty great as well. I saw bald eagles and deer enjoying the spring afternoon, all part of a very scenic hike. It is far off the beaten path, but worth a visit for sure.
