Long and challenging

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 24, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice cement tee pads, long and shorter on most of the holes.
Very nice DD tee signs.
Great DD Vet baskets
Plenty of elevation with some great views

Cons:

Due to fires and floods, the course was overgrown, which is too bad, this is a great course.

Other Thoughts:

I rated this course based on the course, not the condition it was in when I played it. DD NM had posted that the course was open but overgrown as the Ruidoso parks department was busy cleaning up from fires and floods.

Shoot, the road is technically close going by the course, however YOU ARE local traffic, just go around the barrier.

Large parking area, even a restroom you can use next to the course. Practice basket too.

This is not a course for the faint of heart. it's almost and much up and down as the popular Moon Mountain course a few miles away.

Playing from the Pro tee's, this course is not easy. Several true par 4 holes and even a couple that push par 5. The rough is cleared out mostly. The high grass due to not being mowed in a while was the hardest part of playing the course when I played it.

the front 9 are mostly going up and then back down the side of a large hill. Hole 9 is iconic, very long shot down hill and is picture perfect. FUN shot to tell the truth.

Then you have a few birdie opportunities before the back side. Not as much elevation here, but you do have some of the longer holes here.

Hole 16 is probably the longest hole here and is a bomber down the hill and mostly open.

hole 17 has a triple mando, but it's right off the tee and not hard to hit.

In general, this is a great course and would have been more enjoyable for me if it had been cleaned up. I did get the hell scared out of me when a random thunderstorm went overhead. Thankfully all the lighting was between clouds and not hitting the ground. it did cool me off though.

I must also mention, driving though town and out to the course is pretty sad. Not only has the area been ravaged with forest fires this year, which several homes and business near the course were wiped out, but in town you could see where they have been having to dig themselves out of mud from flooding. Several damaged to destroyed homes and business from that too.

Would I play here again? Yes, Ruidoso is a destination area with some of the best disc golf course in the state in the area. If you don't mind boondocking, there are also plenty of areas to camp in the National Forest too.
