Pros:
-A course of good distance, no super short holes and one that is 572 feet
-A great mix of open and wooded holes, the open ones always have a few trees and the ever present SD wind to negotiate with
-Wooded holes are usually fair, they are not luck shots
-Baskets are Mach 3 and are great
-Pretty easy to follow layout
-Course is harder- meant for more advanced players
-Host of a few good tourneys per year including one this past weekend
-Adequate parking, bathrooms, garbage cans, water, etc
-Multiple pin locations, i assume they rotate them
-Scorecards and map available in office
-Course is maintained very well by the state, a pro of pay to play courses
-Some memorable holes for me: #2 a shorter toss over a small swampy area to a pin to the left. Two trees rise from the swampy area as a challenge. #7 572 feet with a left dogleg, barely managed to get a three with a lucky approach and good putt.
#11 huge dogleg left, impossible to ace, must be very patient with this hole
#12 one of the shorter holes with a hidden pin on the left side
#13 long with a tight fairway and punishment for leaving it
#16 pretty open but a tight grove of trees surround the hole
Cons:
-No map, yardage, etc on tee signs (you do get a map with all this and scorecard at office)
-Can lose a disc in the tall prarie grass that lines most fairways
-Distances were probably not right on the scorecard given by the park office, just seemed a little off
-Tees are natural, not in bad shape but could be improved
-Just a little elevation.
-Could be a pro or con; this is a SD state rec area and costs 4 dollars per person or 6 dollars per vehicle or 28 dollars for a vehicle season pass.
Other Thoughts:
This is no beginners course. Most holes present decent challenge to players of all levels. If they had signage and concrete tees this course would be a 4.5 for sure. Awesome course. There is only one other decent course for miles any direction so if you're here play it for sure. When the first reviewer played here it was a 9 holer and not as good so take that into consideration when looking at reviews.
