Great intro course

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 28, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

If you were taking a new player to play disc golf for the first time this is the type of course it would be great for them to learn on. Mainly 180-260ft holes with only a few over 300 and very manageable obstacles.

Plays in a circle around the majority of a passive rec park, mainly dog walkers here but I did see about 5 other groups/solo players out and about.

Pads are nice concrete and I never saw a problem with them. Signs are basic but have metal bog hooks that are very sturdy and helpful.

Baskets are yellow T2s and they are all good expect one that has the outer chains hung wrong. I think it's 16.

The holes themselves offer a lot of ace runs and I don't know that you would be happy if you didn't ding at least one basket(I hit 9). And it probably gets a ton of aces, nearly every hole is reachable and has a clear shot at it.

I didn't feel like I played incredibly and was -16. You are going to want to torch this one.

Cons:

The main issue is that it can get boring. The shapes are different in the beginning but they get more monotonous eventually especially the final three holes that are essentially the same shot thrice in a row.

Would dig better bathrooms, there is on port o let and it's on the far side of the dog park.

It's a fine little basic course and can be played quickly but it's just too straightforward and with too few points of interest to be better than a 2.5

Other Thoughts:

It's a great place to learn, but if you ever progress you should move on quickly.

A Slaughter Down By The Sea 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 24, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

(2.059 Rating) A beginner friendly course and not much else.
- ACEABILITY - I sleepwalked for much of this course. Thankfully my sub-consciousness kept my body going due to the aura that was created by highly aceable holes. My gosh, seven sub 200-foot holes with light obstacles. I would expect aces to mount here at a clip four times the normal rate. I swear my ears heard a slight cage ding on hole (2).
- BEGINNER FRIENDLY - Sea Isle is a perfect new players course. It's near impossible to lose a disc here, unless one throws one high in a tree or forgets to pick up. Searching in overgrowth or thick bushes is limited to just a couple of spots. A first-time player with some athleticism might even chalk up a birdie out here.
- BASICS - Adequate tees and baskets. The tees are concrete, although on the smallish side. I think I foot measured 4 by 8, which is all that's needed on many of the short holes here. Nice new yellow Prodigy baskets as well. I thought they were DISCatchers at first seeing the yellow band, but as I got closer, my euphoria was strangled into submission.
- SIGNAGE AND NAVIGATION - I did not see a course map posted in my haste, but I spotted tee (1) right away pulling into the parking lot. (1) is located along the center south boundary of the park for reference. After getting my bearings there, the holes seemingly flowed together halfway decent. There's a three-hundred foot gap between (5) and (6), so players will need to know to just continue walking North. There are also a couple double back transitions. Nothing horrible that a one-minute recon effort couldn't figure out. The tee signage is adequate for this style of course, just hole numbers and distances. Updated hole lengths were sharpied on each tee sign, which I assume occurred after the tees were poured.
- QUICK PLAY - "Blistering Bagger Bliss" was my alternate review title for this one. 49 minutes for this quick solo on an empty course pre-dawn.
- MAINTENANCE - The park was well maintained for my appearance.

Cons:

Powder puff disc golf.
- LACK OF CHALLENGE - The challenges presented here are barely even Novice level. I arrived here pre-dawn with coffee pulsating through my veins and was back asleep by hole (4). Nothing presented here is going to rattle higher skilled players. 13 holes are sub 260 feet. Hole (8) is not even a buck fifty and is basically obstacle free. I'm an Intermediate level player and I found the squeaky sound of my dripping wet shoes more entertaining than this course.
- MULTI USE HAZARDS - Players will have to be aware of their surroundings here. I was fortunate to play right after a big rain at pre-dawn and got an empty park. Walking paths and roads are in play on many holes. On active park days, I could imagine that some holes may need to be skipped or require long waits before being able to safely throw. The course also infringes on itself a bit on a few holes.
- FLAT - The Mississippi has more undulations than this course. I don't think one hole varies by more than 6 or 7 feet. Tee (18) sort-of tees off a modest 6-foot bluff and hole (1) has maybe a 3-foot raised green. The rest of the holes could be described as glass flat.
- HOLE VARIETY - In addition to the flatness, the other gameplay aspects are rather vanilla too. No water elements in play. Very little line movement. Generally short, although hole (16) was almost 400 feet long. Way too many featureless plays for my taste.
- AMENITIES AND EXTRAS - As noted in the pros, the basics are adequate. However, there are no extras like multi-tees, alt basket placements, benches or even a practice basket.
- SKILL LEVEL FRIENDLY - Great for beginners and novices, and perhaps recs looking to rack up aces. A bore fest for higher skilled players.

Other Thoughts:

Sea Isle is likely going to win the hearts of players just getting started. Recs and Novices will enjoy the high birdie potential and will feel like immortal pros when they card sub 50 rounds. Experienced traveling players looking for exotic intriguing game play should just skip this one. For me, it was a ho hum bagger hit that was needed in my quest to hit 500 total courses before the end of the summer of 2021. Like I noted earlier in the review, I sleep-walked this one. Even if there was an extensive effort to change some things on this course, there's just not enough quality or quantity of land here to make an inspiring layout for veteran traveling players. It's great that this type of course exists in Memphis for new players and all, it's just not for me.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - A typical park setting. No eyesores, but nothing exotic either. I grade eye-appeal on a curve and scored this parcel as average among all courses I've played to date.

Good beginners/intermediate course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 28, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

As the first review mentioned, very good course for beginners. Short, playable, and very fair. Beginners won't be frustrated with losing discs here. Not really going to happen. Even though it is short, it can be windy here, so it will still challenge those intermediate players coming to sharpen their putter and mid-range game. Good place to come get in a quick round or be able to knock down a couple rounds.

Cons:

No signs yet, but probably will be in the works soon. Periodic walkers on the paths, so occasionally you will have to wait for a safe throw. Most all of the holes follow the walking paths.

Other Thoughts:

Great little course for tournaments.

Better for its location than its dg 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 25, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Location is its best selling point. If you live in the area, it's nice to have close by. If you don't, it's likely not worth going out of your way for.
- Quick short course, without any long walks between baskets.
- UPDATE: All holes but Hole 17 have concrete tee pads, and I have to assume #17 will have its pad soon. They're short pads, but most of the holes are short, so it's rarely a serious issue.
- Good course for beginners. Intermediate and advanced players will be looking at a couple ace runs and a lot of easy birdies.
- Haven't seen much traffic here, and even though some holes play concerningly close to a walking trail, there haven't been enough people on the walking trails to cause more than a few seconds of delay when I've played it.

Cons:

- Holes with much of anything by way of obstacles or interest tend to be super short, and the holes with more normal distances tend to lack obstacles. Overall, it's a rather open course.
- It's in a decently-sized neighborhood park, without any elevation changes or really beautiful views.
- No signage. But even without signage, it's generally easy to follow.

Other Thoughts:

Starts out forcing you to make a couple of technical (though very short) shots. OB looms on the first couple holes. There are a couple opportunities for interesting shot-shaping in the middle portion of the course, though most of it is pretty straight-forward. The final holes are just in a field without much by way of obstacles, giving the course an unengaging ending.

Park in the lot off of Sea Isle Rd between Sea Isle Elementary and Lucille McWherter Senior Center. Course starts south of the parking lot, on peninsula of land bordered by Sea Isle Rd, the parking lot driveway, and Senior Center driveway.

From there, it's pretty easy to follow, flowing around the edge of the park counterclockwise for the most part. After #5, keep walking straight across the driveway and past the exercise equipment to the tee for #6. After 18, you'll be back at the parking lot.
