Express Course Right Off The Expressway 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 14, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

When I say a course is just off the interstate , you can see I75 from the top of the course . Shady Brook Greenway Park is a little hidden small park that runs parallel to the highway . The 9 hole course runs right up the park street for 5 holes , a little uphill , then back down the other side for 4 , a little downhill . The baskets are yellow banded Discatchers , The tee pads are framed gravel , and the signage is okay , with Hole # ,par and flight path . There is a nice kiosk with map near hole 1 , which is at the end of the road . A decent bathroom is also near hole 1 . Trash receptacle is on the course , too . The course is well maintained . They were cleaning the bathrooms when I was there on Monday morning . The course distance varies from 155' to 271' ( #9 ) . Disc risk is about zero . Not much to lose it into except maybe the back couple of holes on a griplock . . There is a little fun factor to a course that plays this fast . No signature hole , but a lot of ace runs and birdies . Course took me about 25 minutes to finish solo . Maybe an hour for a foursome . Picnic table & trash can at 3 , can also cross the street and sit after hole 7 .Fantastic course to bag or stretch those legs after a long drive south for vacation .

Cons:

#1 Navigation . Not for the course , but really for the locals or out of towners . i am not sure that too many know about this course . #2 Challenge . Not much here . Your local and newbie should shoot par if the can keep their drive off the street . Only a couple of holes over 200' . Parking is at a premium here . A very small lot awaits , but I can't imagine anyone comes here much

Other Thoughts:

A fantastic course for newbies and locals . Fast , easy birdie and ace runs , still forcing you to control your drives either on the right or the left side of the road . I was playing right behind local disc golf enthusiast Jim Hunter , a retiree that enjoys coming here several times a week . He says that no one local knows this place . Sad . Anyway , My Recommendation : local Intermediates , or pros , not a good idea . Head up to nearby Okahumpka , Floral or Whispering Pines . Other than that , locals , newbies learning to keep their discs in bounds , and especially weary travelers looking to stretch for 25 minutes before finishing the drive south can give this course a look-see . It should cost you roughly a total of 45 minutes of your time . You might even leave with an ace .

Fun Rec/Leg Stretching Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 25, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

A fun and a short rec course that is right next to I-75 and would make a nice quick leg stretching round if driving through. Most of the holes are near or under 200' and only one (hole 9) is over 250'. The shell tees are decent enough, the tee signs are nice and the baskets are nice. The course plays down one side of the entrance road then back down the other. Holes 1-5 play on a sandy hill with enough trees in the way to force a little shot shaping. The better holes (6-9) play on the other side of the road and offer better more scenic types of looks.

The course has nice restrooms and a picnic table/garbage can by hole 3.

Cons:

The course is very short, which could be a con for some, but not for me.

The course is right next to I-75, so traffic noise can be loud at times.

Other Thoughts:

The entrance to the park is hard to find as of this review. The road that goes into the park is in between the on-ramp to I-75 and the railroad tracks and kind of goes through a construction zone. There is no sign for the park and some of the locals we talked to didn't even know that the park was there.

Prep Round 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 19, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.289 Rating) (REVISED - replayed August 2017) A very short rec course.
- LOCATION - Shady is a quick pit stop off the highway. No more than a two minutes drive from the I75 exit. The course is literally right off the exit.
- ACEABILITY - Wow, if you want your first ace, this is the place to play. Eight shots under 220 feet. I've personally hit the basket 3 times now over 8 rounds.
- QUICK PLAY - This course should play super quick. I personally will blow thru 2 solo rounds in about 30 minutes.
- CHAINS - DISCatchers, enough said.
- FORGIVENESS - The odds of losing a disc due to an errant shot is near impossible. You'd have to throw one over the fence along (2-5). However, even if you do this, you'd still be able to make a 1/2 mile walk around the fence to get it.
- BIGGINER FRIENDLY - Little overgrowth and little opportunity to lose a disc, as said above. Plus, eight holes listed under 220 feet in length. I'm sure most would agree that these are good characteristic for a course to take first timers and beginners to.
- NAVIGATION - Very easy. There's a course map by (1) and all the next tees are visible from the prior basket. It really doesn't get much more easier than this course.
- GROW THE SPORT - Not all courses have to be gems. I'm glad this course exists as it brings the sport to another area.

Cons:

Several sizable issues with Shady Brook.
- SAND - The course is just inundated with sand everywhere and it will get in your socks and shoes, but more importantly it will affect your footing. Plus, walking on the stuff is a major energy drainer, even despite the course's short length.
- TEES - They were really nice on my first play back in summer of 2016, but they are continuing to deteriorate. I figure they will be poor and pitted by 2019.
- CHARACTER - In addition to the poor tees listed above. Shady falls short on extras like that of other established courses. Only one sitting area at tee (3). No shelter or any picnic tables at the end of round gathering point. Signage is adequate for this type of course but it's only a line description and distance. No practice basket, multi tees or multi baskets. There is however a restroom building with a drinking fountain.
- UNIQUENESS - The holes themselves in terms variety are well below average. To seasoned players, they are all short and straight ace runs with the exception of hole (9) which could be a mid ridge shot for some intermediate players.
- ELEVATION - less than 10 feet of elevation change throughout the entire course. This is typical for Florida.
- TOO EASY - Shorter and less challenging than nearby Kenny Dixon. The course should be easy to break par for even many recreational players.
- RAW BEAUTY - When comparing other nearby courses (Floral, Lake Okahumpka and Quarry) Shady comes up well short.

Other Thoughts:

Like nearby Kenny Dixon, Shady Brook brings the sport to a new area and can also serve as a warm up for those day-tripping from Tampa bay to the northern state courses, and vise-versa.

One and Done 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 12, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Immediately accessible from I-75. All holes are birdie/aceable. Has signage and the flow is decent. Can be played very quickly for a fast warm-up or on-the-way-through type of round.

Cons:

Only a feasible course for first time and beginner players. Advanced and pro level players will play the course once and most likely never go back. Check it off the list and move on.
Too many of the holes require the same throw.

Other Thoughts:

Great course to see if you can birdie all the holes. I got 8 of 9 on the first time played with only using a putter and approach disc.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 23, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

The best part of this short rec course is its proximity to the highway. For those driving I-75, the park is about forty seconds out of the way. I'm guessing that the majority of usage will be by people doing just that. Between the lack of additional travel and the lack of time it will take to play, it's a pretty fine way to stretch the legs during a long drive
I'm a fan of the brand new baskets and the crushed shell (crushed stone?) tees look nice and are good enough considering the lack of a run up that will be needed. The signs are pretty minimal. But they give the distance and hey, you can always see the basket here.
Though mostly open, a nice job is done of putting the basket behind trees and forcing lines to be thrown on a majority of holes. It's one of those, "I'm glad it was here when I passed by," courses.

Cons:

It's a very short course, with all but two holes under 200 feet from tee to basket. So it's mostly intended for beginners. But.....the first five holes are sandwiched between the park road and an unclimbable fence. The other side is the highway. The holes are so short that neither will be an issue for experienced players but beginners may end up turning discs over and watching them sail onto the easement. Or, if they're not careful, hitting cars. The final four holes are better in this regard. They still play very close to the park road(now on the left,) but the right side at least is bounded by trees.

Other Thoughts:

Still, if the park road isn't busy, this course packs a lot of fun given the amount of effort needed to reach it.

NIce Stop on a Long Drive 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Course was well maintained and very easy to access right off I-75. A good course for beginners as there are no water holes, no thick woods to lose your discs in.

Cons:

Not a very technical course. Pros will get bored.

Other Thoughts:

Shots seem to favor lefties or guys who throw flicks.
