Pros:
An above-average 9-holer working in decent variety and challenge.
-Amenities: Basic good. Concrete tees, good baskets, tee signs with map.
-Variety: The first two holes play at the forgiving fringes of woods, (3), (7), and (9) are in the open, and the others are in denser woods with tight fairways. Good to have different biomes.
-Challenge: Parts of this course are quite challenging, especially in the woods. (4), (5), and (8) are quite thin lines that require decent power (especially (4)) to have a birdie look, and could get rough if you go for it and ricochet instead. The remaining holes, except for the very short (6), aren't super easy either like happens on many smaller courses.
-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: A mix, ranging from boring to challenging. The open holes are pretty boring, though not super short, so they provide a pleasant counter to trees. The woods holes are where the shaping is more interesting, as they will require the ability to throw perfectly straight with late fade or to toss uniformly smooth turns. (1)-(2) are a little more open woods to help warm up, but the later woods are quite tight and run near a creek that requires caution near the greens. Everybody will be ace-running (6), but only the finest players will be able to birdie more than one of (4), (5), and (8). The course isn't dead-flat, with some gentle elevation slightly affecting gameplay.
-Navigation: Flawless without a map. Hole transitions aren't super short, but they are reasonably clear.
-Feed the Ducks: I'm not scoring the course based on this, but I did enjoy interacting with the waterfowl while walking over the bridge of the pond to return to my car. Bring a quarter if you want to purchase something for the birds.
Cons:
-Drainage: Biggest gripe with this course. From hole (3) onwards, every fairway had at least some mud and/or standing water. It ranged from a minor annoyance on (6) to all over my shoes while trying to get to my fairway shot on (9).
-Walking Path: The fairways of (4), (5), (6), and (8) double as rocky walking trails. This actually isn't a big problem from the shaping perspective (normally trails are too windy and thin to work as fairways), but it does mean that walkers could be an issue causing delay. Caution should also be exercised if you're likely to pull a shot right on (3), (7), or (9).
-Dubious Line: Hole (4), marked as a par-3, is pushing what's physically possible with a disc in one shot. I didn't personally see the birdie line, as the fairway has both an early and a late change of direction. It plays just fine as a short two-shot hole, though.
-Disc Loss: The river could claim something on a ricochet on (4) or an overshoot on (6) or (8). Also, I'm guessing that the rough gets quite thick during warmer months, so a miscue in the thicker woods could take a while to track down.
-Trash: The river had a fair bit of litter in it. It also smelled on a couple of holes.
-Nine Holes: This is one of those rare 9-holers where I would really like to have seen what would be possible with double the land and double the holes. I wish it was longer.
Other Thoughts:
A small picture of how to make a basic good course with variety of scenery and variety of challenge. The pacing and layout work to make this one of the better nine-hole tracks I've gone through. Overall, due to being cut short and a few dull holes, I've awarded it a Decent/Typical. Other than mud, I wouldn't hesitate to come here if I wanted a short round.
