Fabulous Florida Tour 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 11, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Wickham is an old course that has been around even longer than I have been playing. That means it's one of the first 300 disc golf courses ever made. Because of that fact, the course has an old-school feel to it. Player who can throw 350 accurately will score very well here. Those who struggle to hit 300 will get a lot of pars. The holes mostly play on flat ground with palmettos and other thick bushes to hide the baskets behind. There's not a ton of shot shaping to be done but you do need to consider landing placement. You really don't want to end up in these bushes looking for your disc. The course is worn in and it's fairly easy to find your way around the course as you can see most tees and baskets as you are going throughout the course. Maybe a few tricky pin placements that can be tough to see. It's a lot of 250 - 400 foot shots out here. One or two water holes from what I recall also. But they are on the easy side of water holes for Florida. Shouldn't lose a disc if you have average control of a disc.

Great group of locals out here who run leagues here and out at PBR and Cocoa also.

Cons:

It kind of gets repetitive and a lot of the holes kind of blend together after a while. With so many holes playing around the 300 foot mark, it can make for a tiring round of throwing harder drives. I know in the winter they do a holiday lights display and some holes become unplayable. But from what I recall, some of the locals set up some other temp holes while that happens?

Other Thoughts:

Wickham is a decent course. Back in 1990 when this course was built, it was definitely pushing the limits of disc golfers and their discs. Even today it's going to challenge most players. Those who have good control in the 250-350 foot range will score quite well here. To score well it is important to make sure you land your drives in the perfect spots or risk being stuck behind a bunch of palmettos with little chance of making the putt. Holes like these are why Johne McCray is so good at turbo putting.

I've had a good time playing here and I was lucky to get to play with a group of locals. Tommy Blevens and some others I can't remember names of. A good group of people who made me feel welcome and made the experience better than it would have been on my own.

If you are nearby, it's worth a play. It's kind of average in terms of Florida golf. Though the course is mostly secluded from other park users, and you don't have to worry about walking paths through holes like a lot of FL courses. It's more on the open side of FL courses with most of the holes playing in grassy areas with smaller clumps of palmettos throughout. It's not like some of the jungle golf that can be found at some of the other courses nearby. Overall it was a fun course that wasn't great or bad. Just kind of an average course that would have been better than many back in the 90's.

Fun course to play! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 28, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Pretty easy to navigate
-Laid out fairly logical and tee signs guide you to the next hole
-Open, so you can practice different types of throws
-Centrally located in Brevard
-23 holes makes for longer play and more fun, real easy to skip a hole or replay another if stuck behind larger or slower groups
-Usual not crowded, making it a good play

Cons:

-WIDE OPEN, not technical enough
-If the wind is over 5-8, your disc will get tossed around
-To me (a beginner) it seems the only real challenge is basket placement, like with bush to hide it behind?
-Part of it is in the middle of the campground overrun, you might have to divert

Other Thoughts:

This is the first real course I have started playing. I just started playing with my boy. This is a good course for beginners. I think if you have skills, you might get bored here, I am not sure. Not the best course in the area, but it is conveniently located, and fun to play.

It was windy yesterday, so I finally got to see what wind does to your throws.

I might come out and just do a clean up of a hole or two. Get tired of looking for a disc and coming across 2 or 3 empties. There are trash cans all over, no reason not to put the trash there.

Nice Park, Average Disc course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 24, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- This course is located in a very nice park with ample size. The disc course does a nice job not to interfere with other park patrons who mostly were walking/jogging along the roadways
- The Course has a nice variety of holes for the most part with several shop shaping options.
- A few hazards were present to give some character especially the chip shot over water for the final hole.
- Signage and hole flow were good as well, we were able to navigate the course fairly easily. "Next tee" signs were present on each basket leading to the next tee.
- There were port o lets present throughout the course and a main restroom house near the entrance.

Cons:

- Flat as can be... typical for most FL courses. There is 0 elevation on this course to play with.
- Unforgiving rough... While it does add to the difficulty level, this course is full of thick, bushy messes of hybrid palm fronds. They eat a disc whole and it is very tough to find anything in there. If you have to track through there, be prepared to have your legs sliced up a little. Some holes have an entire fairway littered with these things and you just have to bomb a shot up and over them and hope you land somewhere safe.
- Became repetitive towards the end... The course looks pretty much the same from hole 1 and hole 22...not much in the way of scenery change.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, a decent course to play if you live in the area. We deemed this place worthy of a visit maybe once a year since we live about 90 miles away. I'm sure the locals enjoy playing here but for me it just lacks character that I look for in a well designed Disc Golf Course. Each hole was the same Par 3 distance with the same obstacles.

Patches Of Cabbage Palms 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 25, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

A somewhat different kind of course. Most of the holes are in open mowed fields with clumps of dense cabbage palms and pine trees for obstacles. The baskets are hard to see even with the poles on the top and some are blind. The course has ok tees and tee signs. If you are careful you can have a fun round here.

Cons:

If you are not careful or don't spot your throws you are going to spend a lot of time looking for your discs. The cabbage palm clumps are islands of dense rough in a sea of grass. Some of the tee signs don't have new pin placements on them. Navigation was not easy and not intuitive. I would strongly encourage using a map or a guide. Some holes are very close together. Keep your eyes open. We got buzzed a couple of times by throwers on nearby tees. There are a lot of nondiscgolfers roaming about on the course and parking near the fairways. I saw a disc go around a blind corner and smash a van parked there. YO, there is a disc golf course here people!

Other Thoughts:

A good challenge for medium to higher skill levels and even with the negs there are some cool looks and fun holes here. I would not recommend the course to beginners or those of lower skill levels. They could quickly become frustrated and lose all of their discs.

Fun after work round 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 16, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

(3.108 Rating) A well manicured course that's fun to play.
- FUN FACTOR - Wickham is the perfect place for the after work happy hour round. Spacious fairways, but still challenging enough to keep most skilled players pleased. There are not too many opportunities here to lose a disc. Plus I'll also mention that there's a club here that keeps the place up and schedules weekly events.
- RAW BEAUTY - I found the beauty of this course to be a touch above average. Well kept fairways, trimmed up palms and other trees, but yet also a few patches of natural overgrown palmetto patches to swallow your disc when you make an error.
- SKILL LEVEL FRIENDLY - Wickham has somehow managed to find the perfect middle ground between too easy, and too hard, and has probably attracted a wide range of skill levels. Several open plays but also a few longer holes (+400 feet) and several guarded basket placements that will dictate an ideal angle to attack a basket. If I lived in the area, this is the type of course I'd bring a newer player too.
- CHARACTER - Well above average. The concrete tee pads are adequately sized. Lots of extra pin placements making return visits that much more appealing for out of area players. There are multiple tees at more than half of the holes. There is a bunch of seating. There is a good course map and community board as well. As for the lacking items, no practice area and no bag hangers.
- EXTRA HOLES - Although listed as 4 extra holes (22 total), it appears they may be adding another one between holes (3) and (4), as there was another hole there that I played during my round. This hole was a temporary inclusion for a recent tournament and apparently it's been left out for several months now. So perhaps 23 holes.

Cons:

Other than variety that's slightly less than average, I have just a few ticky-tack comments.
- UNIQUENESS - A lot of the layout feels the same, hole to hole. In totality I'd rate it in the middle but for courses I've rated this high, it's definitely sub-par among those courses. There are no Par 4's or 5's, no true dog-legs, and tunnel shots are mostly non-existent. There is water in play on a couple holes, (3) and (22), and baskets are guarded in several different ways to force shots from a multitude of angles.
- ELEVATION - You won't find any elevation here or at really any of the surrounding courses either. At Wickham Park, it's probably even below average for a Florida course. There are a couple holes here and there that bring in a 10 foot high mound or so, but that's about it. I did like the use of a mound on (4) which aids in projecting the right basket placement. There is also a nice backdrop mound on (15) and (21), but it doesn't aid in the play of the hole by being beyond. It acts more as a putting safety net.
- PALMETTO BUSHES - As with a bunch of courses in Florida, this course has some pretty substantial palmetto bush patches. When your disc finds one, you may end up with several minutes searching, and after finding it, you'll probably possess a few cuts as well.
- SPACING - Several fairways feel partially shared. My group had several shots end up well into adjacent fairways. So be aware of other groups in your vicinity.
- WIND - Due to less than normal tree coverage, wind will likely be an issue. I played 2 other courses in the same general area the day I played this course, and the wind effect here was the greatest.

Other Thoughts:

I had the pleasure of playing Wickham the first time with a good friend of mine that moved away from my area. (DGCR member Neostrat). He fell in love with this game because of this course. You really can't go wrong with trying Wickham Park out. Not a game changer, but a fun round for all.

Other Thoughts:

Learning the layout can be tricky at first, but I wouldn't call that a con. If you have a digital camera (i.e. cellphone), snap a photo of the course map at hole one and refer to it as needed. People here are nice, so you can ask them for guidance as well.

OG 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 25, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-23 holes. Most have multiple pin positions and there are long pads on 9 holes.
-Nice concrete pads with plenty of size for long run ups.
-Good signage. Bolt system on posts to indicate current pin placement. Pvc poles on hidden baskets also help.
-Benches on most holes.
-Family friendly park that has a nice playground and dog park.
-Great place to let it rip and improve your drives. Most holes are wide open with large pine trees providing obstacles and palmettos protecting a majority of the baskets.

Cons:

-Drainage on many holes is very bad during rainy season. Holes 11-13 can become unplayable.
-Back 9 lost many of its large trees to fire.
-Some pin positions feel forced in to add distance to holes that didn't really need it.

Other Thoughts:

Wickham is the oldest existing course in Brevard. Unfortunately its starting to show. Did not list but older baskets may be con for some. This is where I learned to play. I still enjoy playing here. Just think its lost some of its appeal.

UPDATE(1 year)- An effort has been made to relieve some of the flooding by adding a large drain on hole 1. This has helped but not totally fixed drainage problems. Pin position D was also added to hole 1 to avoid any standing water. The country music festival that plagued the course for several years has relocated to a new venue. There are still times that a random event may close part of the course.
UPDATE(3 years)- In the last couple years a walking path and a massive pavilion were constructed near the front 13. The tee pad on hole 5 was relocated to a slightly different spot.
UPDATE(5 years)- A new hole, the "A" hole, has been added between holes 3 and 4. Several new pads and pin positions have been added throughout the course. An effort is also underway to raise funds for new baskets.

Wickham Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 11, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

22 holes. The newish signs give distance and direction of next tee so previous navigation problems are gone. Sign posts indicate basket positions with a bolt by a, b, or c. Mostly red tees. However, a few holes do have seperate blue tees. Mostly open shots through pine trees. Ace runs all over. Lots of skip ace potential off the pine needles that cover the ground. Other short holes such as 9 can be aced with an air shot. Tall white pvp pipe on baskets help you see the target over the palmettos from most tees. Some long shots added recently with a number of longer alternate pins.

Cons:

repetitive and nondescript open shots over/around scrub palms. The only difference on most holes is there are less or more scrub palms. Some shots to new longs are so long and blind you may not know what pile of scrubs to start looking for your disc in. Some baskets are very old and will spit out all the purest of putts. Scrub palms could hide discs causing delays.

Other Thoughts:

signature holes #12 across a almost dry stream and bridge is long, 22 is a over water shot. Cross the road for holes 3 & 4. Although most holes are repetitive and nondescript this is still a fun course as mostly open to let it rip. Not a lot of challenge here. Most pars or bogies are the result of putting from inside the bushes. A solid Turbo putt or pizza toss is a good tool to have here. The review below says he could not find the course, I assure you it is still there. I tried to justify giving a 3 disc review as I do enjoy playing Wickham. However, there is just a lack of variety or aesthetics to warrent a 3.

Disappointed 2+ years drive by

Cons:

On vacation, drove an hour to play. Spent 15 minutes driving around an enormous park with no signage about where the course was. Finally found a single basket. There were pads, benches, holes in the ground for pins and signs, ALL EMPTY.

I am extremely disappointed about this. A beautiful March day kind of wasted.

Where are the Baskets? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 21, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

I liked a lot about this course. Don't let the rating fool you. This is almost a 3.5 course. Add next tee arrows, and it would be. But unfortunately, I did have to dock at least an additional half point for what may be a temporary issue. But more on that later. I'm starting with what went right.

The best part about Wickham Park is the flags on top of the baskets. They stand on tall poles and allow you to see the targets when they are behind brush. And frequently, they are behind brush.

Most of the holes force you to find a line through scattered palm trees. The vast majority of the trees are surrounded with a block of shoulder-high shule. What's great about this is that you can visualize both the path and landing area that you are aiming for. The targets are so often protected by brush that needs to be shot over. But, because of the way the vegetation is limited to the immediate vicinity of the palms, you can tell from a distance where it will be safe to land your disc.

The rest of the terrain is mowed grass or open field. There is low risk of disc loss because if you go in the brush. It's well-kept and in an active park, most of the other activities are separated from the course by a decent amount of space.

While the layout of trees and tees will give you a variety of distances and lines, it is the fact that you nearly are shooting over stuff that makes the course distinct. Shots must be kept low, but not too low.

Cons:

The problem here is that not all baskets are present. It seems in retrospect as if the 22-hole course as been transformed into an 18-holer. That would be fine if there was some sort of notice. But we ended up playing from several tees to the eight basket, because there was no way to tell from the tee or the sign that the proper basket had been removed. Some of the signs had new numbers taped over them, and by the last few holes, where 20 was now 16, 21 was now 17, we somewhat figured it out. But it was no picnic. On an additional hole we ended up playing to the 8 tee. For whatever reason, some baskets are not where they should be according to tee signs and maps, or are just gone.

If that is the case, than the new hole eleven shoots directly over the seven tee? Strange.

Beyond that issue, which I would assume is temporary or new, the course needs next tee arrows badly. Sometimes, the next tee was visible from the basket, but often I had to consul the map downloaded from this site, but even using that, it was often a chore to find tees here. It is just not obvious what direction you are supposed to begin walking in. 3 and 4 were skipped since I did not assume to walk across the road and had not started using the map until we had found 5.

Other Thoughts:

It's pretty simple. A solid, playable course, with debilitating navgation. Next tee arrows, an updated map and the return of missing baskets and this course would be very good.

New in town 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 10, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Every tee has a concrete pad and tee sign, which I found to be fairly accurate. The park is well maintained and the baskets are moved what seems to be about once a month or so.This is nice so you don't get used to the same throws. The holes are of good variety as far as distance and basket placement goes. I would suggest an afternoon if you are gonna be close to the area.

Cons:

The course is in a VERY busy public park. There always seems to be some person or peoples walking from out behind shrubs as you play and the park is used for a lot of different things so sometimes the entire course is unavailable.

Other Thoughts:

Being from the Ohio/Michigan area, I have found Florida disc golf VERY FLAT. Like most disc golfers I am a fan of elevation and trees. But so far this is the better of parks I have found on the Atlantic side.

Wide open spaces 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 8, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

A well thought out and well-maintained course. Each hole has a concrete tee-pad that is of adequate size to tee off. Also, each tee pad has a hole map on it that shows you the multiple basket locations, the mandos, and the direction of the next tee pad (crucial). The park itself is very clean and well-maintained. The course itself has an excellent layout, with mainly wide open shots on most of the holes. Scattered throughout many of the holes were clumps of palmettos and undergrowth, which made for a nice challenge in placing drives. Another plus was that many of the baskets had poles with flags attached that would stick out above the brush so you could see the basket location when it was obscured from the tee.

Cons:

Not a lot of shot variety as most holes play straight ahead and wide open. If you don't have a 300 foot drive, you can only hope to par the course.

Other Thoughts:

This was a lovely course that really gives you a chance to let loose and get some serious flight time to your drivers. It also did reward precision on several holes in order to avoid palmettos. The last hole that plays over a pond is a nice finishing touch. All in all, a great course!

Wonderful Wickham 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 11, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) Nice sized concrete tees are always my favorite. Red and blue tees are marked on the concrete so you know if you are on the correct tee.

2) I really enjoy the overall feel of this course the way it works in and around large pockets of palmettos and mature evergreen trees. It is an interesting feel I have never had at a Florida course wither, normally the palmettos are just wild and invasive, but here they have limited them to small pockets around the course and the baskets weave in and around these pockets and help protect the basket locations. This is truly something unique . . . it feels almost like a Midwest favorite Anna Page East where they use pockets of woods, but in this case the Florida vegetation is Palmetto shrubs.

3) Mandos are marked well so that you know when there is something the design forces you to throw a certain direction.

4) Nice signs on this course with Hole #, distance, and a map. Next tees are also indicated and the multiple basket locations. They also have indicators with large letters on the pole for the current basket location

5) This is a very clean and tidy looking course . . . partly because of the feel under the evergreens and around those palmetto areas, but also because there does not seem to be a lot of garbage around. This seems to be a well used park and I am sure the population in the park has a lot to do with how the park remains so clean . . . there is no chance for you to litter without someone else seeing you.

6) Very busy park but the course is well isolated to avoid other park users except in a couple places. There was an RV park I think, ball fields, soccer, what seemed to be like a fairgrounds or something, and they even had a RC sailboat regatta in one of the ponds.

7) Water is used on a couple holes to really make for some interesting shots.

8) Routing on this course is pretty intuitive . . . and they have renumbered since holes were added . . . a welcome sight after playing F. Burton Smith earlier in the day and being frustrated with the hole numbering.

9) Restrooms (portos) are available in a couple places on the course and would be a welcome sight during a tourney round or a long busy day on the course.

10) Plenty of benches and garbage cans around the course complete the amenities of this great course.

11) Multiple tees offer up varying challenge and distance.

12) Excellent variation in hole distances with some in the 100's into the 400's too. There is plenty of variation on the holes in the 200's and 300's to make for different feeling holes. You will have plenty of options for disc selection out here.

13) This is a very beginner friendly course because it is relatively open, but it will still challenge the intermediate level player from time to time.

14) Rollers could be a usable shot out here . . . the turf is consistent and the ground is firm. I love having this as an option on courses.

15) The pine needles make for an interesting feature . . .they seem to play more of a skip off the needled areas. I am not sure if they firm up the soil or if they just make the disc skip more because of less friction with the turf. . . and I know it was probably not an intended effect from the design, but it is something you will need to consider.

Cons:

1) No real variety in foliage density here because the palmettos are just pockets and typically lower than your throws would be and the evergreens are so mature that there are very few limbs that you would encounter with your throws.

2) Most holes can be attacked from whatever direction you want to. I usually like to see a few holes per course that force certain shots, but there is nothing in the "airways" that will force you to do any particular shot. You can pick your favorite shot on each hole and try to execute.

3) I had a lot of drop in 3's out here because if you cannot park the basket you will likely have a simple upshot. This gets a little repetitive and is partly due to my current distance limit (300' or so). If I could throw further I would be able to deuce more holes.

4) No elevation change on this entire course really. It is what it is, but this lacking feature takes away from the course.

Other Thoughts:

I cannot believe this course currently sits under a 3 disc rating . . . perhaps the upgrades and added holes made this course that much better than the old ratings, but this is by far a more fun and scenic course than F. Burton Smith which was rated over 3 discs. I would choose this course anyday if it was local because it is not just fun and challenging but also very scenic in my opinion. I do not have a lot of negatives about the course because there just isn't that much wrong, and the pros are overwhelming. The lack of the tighter wooded holes keeps this course under the 4 disc rating but it is so close. A little more diversity and it would be right up in my favorites. With that said . . . this is just a solid course.

Pros:

Beautiful park full of amenities. Restrooms are easy to find. Plenty of parking. Free.

Lots of space for the long bomb plus a few holes that require some technical play.

Benches on every hole with trees to provide shade and cover from the Florida sun. Nice launch pads.

The baskets are moved every 8 weeks or so, which helps mix it up a bit.

Hole 22 is right over a pond, which is fun.

Cons:

Very flat and open.

It can be difficult to navigate the course but there are always people playing who are happy to help.

Other Thoughts:

There are often guys selling discs out of their truck and the Walgreen's down the street carries a nice selection of discs too.

If it has been raining a lot, the park may flood, meaning you might have to wade through several inches of water to play. Depending on who you are, this is either great fun or horrible!

In general, this is a fantastic park. It is the largest and best-maintained park in the county and offers all kinds of things besides disc golf (camping, swimming, dog park, volleyball, horseshoes, there's a senior center now, sports fields, playgrounds, etc).

Fun course to play, bring a map! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 23, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

-There is a ton of life around the course! There is a pond for fishing, a large archery range, a dog park, as well as volleyball courts and softball fields.

-Holes are a decent distance, not too big and not too small.

-All teepads are in great shape.

-Multiple tee and basket placements for a lot of the holes.

-Good use of the trees and bushes, there were "protected" baskets and no random trees that bother you.

-Hole 22 (the lake hole) is beautiful!

Cons:

-The holes do not always play into each other, and there are no maps or "next tee" signs.

-Lack of elevation change, I do not recall a hole that wasn't flat.

-There is not much signage as to where the first hole was, so I started on hole 5 and continued from there. Reading other reviews it seems like this is a common problem.

Other Thoughts:

I was lucky enough to have a smart phone on me so I could look up the course map. Otherwise I would have been completely lost on the course. You can find a copy of the map on the club website listed under Links/Files.

I am from Ohio and was very pleased to play at Wickham park with the great Floridian scenery and the great locals playing the course.

Not the Best 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course is located in a big park with other amenities such as volleyball, swimming, fishing, and camping. The schule factor and resulting chances of losing discs is on the lower side. There are plenty of opportunities to crush the disc. The course provides a great place to practice playing in the wind. The ground is friendly for rollers. At one point in time this was the location of one of the biggest events on the pro tour.

Cons:

The course is totally flat and mostly wide open. Few holes require much technical skill and the course overwhelmingly favors the power player. All par 3's. There is almost no tree canopy to provide any respite from the hot Florida sun.

The navigation is extremely difficult. The tee sign hole numbers don't match the numbers on the baskets. There are no directional signs between holes.

Several of the baskets are dangerously close to tee pads.

Other Thoughts:

Don't be a dirty discer. Leave the course cleaner than the way you found it.

Hmmmmmmm 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 8, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Long enough to stretch the arm out, on a afew holes.

Cons:

most of the holes feel like deja vu. the same holes over and over again. There are some tight fairways ( open for 250+ then play into the woods), which make it reasonable, but there are no unique holes, most of them seem pretty much the same. if you can throw a roc or buzz 250-300 accurate, and you can throw a fairway driver 300- 350 and you can throw a s curve beyond that ( no huge left turn holes), you are golden... lefties should have no more problems than righties at this course. overall: its flat, most holes call for the same shot.... i thought about doing the melbourne open, but not now. i was dissapointed.

Other Thoughts:

i'm from daytona... i wouldn't make the drive again.
