Pros:
William Jewell DGC is a pretty good nine hole layout. The tees are bare earth, boxed in and fairly level. Each hole has a tee sign, and there are dual pin positions on several holes. The standard Innova disc catchers with yellow bands have red flags to help spot the location, and they're in nice condition.
Every hole is a par 3, and the length is formidable but not unreachable. The fairways are grassy, and usually have a light to moderate elevation component. Most fairways are pretty open, but there are a few trees to work around. The rough can be extremely thick, but it's not much of a factor on several holes. A stream is in play on a couple of holes.
The first hole is a good warm up, but a bit bland. Ball field to the left, road to the right, uphill drive about 325'. Hole 2 is pretty cool. 450', steady downhill shot with a tree halfway through that creates a window that can make or break a tee shot. It is a sizable gap, but the branches loom large. 3 is a basket that is amongst the trees, after a downhill drive that is mostly open. 4 is not as long, but is the steepest uphill drive on the course. Not many trees until you reach the top.
5 is probably my favorite hole, and the biggest downhill run. Not as long as 2, but more punishing rough to the right, and the creek backing the pin if you overshoot it. 6 is on fairly level ground with the thick, brushy banks of the creek to the right. There is a hard right bend, and a cluster of trees and bushes take away the far left side. 7 is a fairly plain shot, about 350', without much elevation change or many trees. 8 is a bit downhill, and plays toward the opposite bank of the creek from hole 5. Lightly wooded, but more standing around the pin. Hole 9 is 370', and has some mature trees standing to the left side of the fairway. It is a little uphill, especially as you near the basket.
Cons:
The walks between tees are not the tightest linkage, but take you to prime tee placements, so I think they do the layout a service. Hole 8 and hole 9 tee back to back in opposite directions, which is weird but again is probably making for the best quality holes.
I wouldn't mind concrete tees to improve the slightly rutted, sandy boxes that are currently there.
Other Thoughts:
This is a fun one, with distance and elevation that is not common for most 9 hole layouts. It really kicked my butt, and I will return and attempt to restore my dignity. No birdies, 11 over par. Uggh. Hole 6 destroyed me, I was lucky not to lose a disc in the creek.
The grounds look to be maintained impeccably from the photos. I played in January, and lingering snow was remaining in places. This spring I am going to take another go at it for sure. Plays nicely with the 9 hole course at nearby Pleasant Valley DGP.
