Hi Rich we had a lawyer that was familiar with the process do it 12 years ago. He was one of our original board members. I heard the process is much tougher now to get 501(c)(3) status. We had to create a charter, a board of directors, become incorporated and file a bunch of paperwork with the IRS. We have to submit 990 tax returns each year and conduct BOD meetings, elections and annual members meeting. I would highly recommend consulting a lawyer familiar with not for profits to help you through the process.
