Nice warm-up or cool-down 9-holer to practice finesse shots

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 27, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Perfect warm-up or cool-down before or after playing the main course. I play the main course first and then this little course as it is a morale booster after being assaulted by the main course.

This family course is not just for kids. If you need to practice your narrow shots in the woods, this little course is perfect for nostep threading the needle. I even did a short, slow Xstep for no. 9 on my August 2023 outing, the second longest of the holes. It's a little wider of a fairway than all the rest.

I found myself throwing the miniature versions of a bend-it-high-and-right turnover (righties) on no. 4; a mild spike hyzer (righties) on no. 5; a flex shot on no. 6. For those who can reach the basket with their drive, no. 7 is surprisingly get-able. No. 8 is an ace-run hole.

These are all approach shots (and some drives!) you will need to replicate on bigger wooded courses. Like the 6B&G par-2 in Stafford County, you can develop some skill here to carry over to your main play.

Cons:

Only light-green flags mark the tees. While I like the light-green flags aesthetically, they are harder to see than some bold color like red or orange. There are no hole signs; there is not enough room for that! The holes are really atop one another. Happily, the family course is on UDisc, so you can follow that to untangle things. Red clip-on next-tee arrows on baskets would be very nice to help one get to the correct next hole. If they are there already and I just missed them, please forgive. Since the holes are atop one another, you might not want to play if there are too many other folks already playing. You might kill each other!

Other Thoughts:

Definitely the course to bring your little kids and beginner adults and older kids, but don't pay $10 just for it. The course info here says: "$10/day to play this course and the main course." I hope that is not per person! Hopefully, there is a group rate for a family or gaggle of friends who are only playing the family course. Hard though for the clubhouse to know who then goes over and plays the main course. Maybe they make some sort of adjustment for families with small kids? It's certainly worth asking about.

At any rate, though on a much smaller piece of land, it's the Scatterville South (smile). I love it!

Maximizing fun per foot

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 26, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

This very short, wooded par-2 course can be surprisingly tricky despite hole lengths averaging only 87 feet. For most players this will be a nice warm-up before playing the main course. In addition, this course serves as a perfect place to introduce beginners into the joys and heartbreaks of disc golf in the woods.

I had a blast playing here, but I absolutely love well-done putter courses like this one.

Fairways are tight but fair, and the course offers a balanced mix of straight, left, and right-turning shots. The layout is compact, with no long walks between holes.

White-banded DisCatcher baskets were easy to spot and caught well. Baskets were mounted securely and numbered on both sides.

Undergrowth has been cleared so there should be near-zero risk of disc loss. Wood chips have been spread on fairways and on paths between holes

Overall a quick, enjoyable spin just a couple of minutes off I-95. Perfect for course baggers, especially combined with the main Forest Valley course.

Cons:

When I played the course was still new and tees were marked with tiny flags mounted low to the ground. This made finding the next tee tricky in places. I expect that more visible tee markers and/or next tee arrows will be installed, but if not I would drop my rating by a half point.

Hole lengths range from 34' to 118' so this is a short course. Could be a pro or a con, depending. But don't come here expecting to blast distance drivers.

Tees are dirt or mulch, which is fine for holes of this length. Course is dead flat.

Other Thoughts:

How many times do tricky 100-foot upshots cost you strokes in the woods? More than zero for most ordinary mortals. Fortunately, there is a remedy - play the Forest Valley Family course, repeatedly if necessary.

I played in late October when the fall colors were near peak and the leaves were absolutely lovely, especially when backlit by the sun.

Pay $10 at the clubhouse to play both courses on site. The main Forest Valley course is a must-play for those in the area, so the benefit is well worth the cost imo.

Drive to the back of the parking lot, past the clubhouse. You will find the main course straight ahead, and the family course on your left. Look for an unobtrusive path leading into the woods. You will see the tee for #1 just inside the tree line.
