Hills in Chicago? Yes!!

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 5, 2024 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Hills, many routes up and down just about the only terrain in near the city. It leads to many opportunities for bombs downhill to stroke your long distance egos! Not wooded significantly, but enough trees to make you think clever routes to some baskets. Separate tee pads for differing abilities adds to the strength of the course and enables newer players to play along with more experienced players more evenly.

Cons:

The flat portion of the course as one can suspect is relatively mundane with some length at least to test your arm strength. It can be a bit wet in those portions as well. Because of the greatness of this course it can be a bit crowded on weekends and you'll likely encounter other discers on weekdays. I've not seen this but because it's hilly sledders flock to the park and some baskets are removed to limit the hazard for the kids.

Other Thoughts:

Best holes. 1-13 are, outside of the Canyons, the best stretch of holes I've played in the area. Up and down you go, but part of the brilliance is it seems as is there are more downhill tee shots than up hill. 8 is a great risk reward with the basket on a berm next to a cattail swamp. Most players have tramped into the soggy bog to find errant throws, sometimes successfully even! 10 is a great throw off of a 40-50 foot mound with zero obstructions. My longest throw ever is from that tee!
18 is a great finishing hole with, from the longer tees, a fling over a pond with branches looming on the right. The pond must be filled with plastic!
A bonus is the location near the unique and original Rainbow Cone on Western Ave just a block or two away.

Big Open Course drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 24, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

*Beautifully maintained
*Great back story
*2 Tee boxes
*Concrete Tee boxes
*Tee Boxes well marked
*Parking lot and bathrooms
*Pro Shop (supposedly, I have never seen it open)

Cons:

*Hole difficulty mainly revolves around elevation changes
*Dog Park next to first 2 holes (not really that bad but worth mentioning)
*No drop zone for hole 18

Other Thoughts:

I love this course. I could throw triple digits at this place and still leave feeling great. I think each hole was made for its unique challenge. It doesn't try to force the course to be harder or easier. There are two holes 18 and I think 5 where you could lose your disc in water/hazard zone. I will play this course over and over. My wife and I are in a constant debate on which course is better here or Katherine Legge. I prefer this course, she the other.

Favorite Course! (so far) 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 25, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Holes feel different with a surprising amount of elevation change; one hole in particular is across a steep (but walkable) small valley and makes an interesting challenge.

Holes have a variety of shape, style, and tree layout, making them a different challenge each time.

Park is well maintained and safe.

Course tees and baskets are also in great shape.

The course does not have walking paths or play areas in it so you should see minimal other traffic.

The last hole goes across a water feature and is a real risk to losing a disc if you dare to go across instead of around the edge!

Multiple tees on most holes let you decide the level of your challenge.

A few of the longer holes on open, flat grass let you stretch your arm with long drives.

Cons:

Finding the start of the course is a little tricky. Finding the next tee is also a little tricky sometimes; overall the course could do with a few more signs to help direct players.

The course is easy to get to only by car.

The long, flat holes are on the back half of the course, and I struggled to get the range on my drives. I would have preferred the shorter technical holes with elevation change later in the course when my arm was tired.

Other Thoughts:

This well-maintained course is a gem in the city of Chicago. It's part of a beautiful park with a water feature and 2 dog areas that is well worth a visit.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 15, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Wind will present challanges.
Short and Long cement tees are in
Water comes into play couple holes
Up and down holes mixed with some long
Several holes give players a chance to use multiple throws; side arm , back hand !

Cons:

One bath room ( clean with toliet paper ) no benches ( boy scout project needed ) Practice basket needed ( how about 2 ? ) More garbage cans needed.

Other Thoughts:

Hole One has moved to along the driving range. Hole Two also moved. 3 goes back up hill accordingly. I played this when it was ball golf course; designers did GREAT job !

Beautiful Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 17, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

just greaaaaaat. when you drive by this course your jaw will drop. "wooow" i have been living in this area for the past 10 years and have to travel at least 15 miles to play a decent course.("Katherine Legge" ) Finally there is a great course right around the corner! Once the park is all finished this might be the best course on the southside. This course is not a beginners course. with holes over 450 and a couple over 500 it offers the strong throwers a bit of a test.
--excellant uphill/downhill back and forth beginning holes. great job in taking advantage of the elevation and great basket placement
--Great placement of the tees, although there not all the way finished, there placed very good, especially hope 7 long tee-over the water.
--hole 8 is beautiful shot with great basket
placement and water comes into play.
--Great use of the big hill, with boxes and baskets.
--course well planned out, navigation was easy and the course is not finished. when it is finished it will be great.
--hole 10 with a big hyzer shot around a huge tree is a great challenge.
--very easily accessible from main roads and parking is great.
--hole 18 shot over the water is magnificent. its a great hole to finish a great course.
--i played it 1 time and the course wasn't even finished yet and i still believe it was great. just wait until this course is complete,it will be AMAZING it will be packed all summer.

Cons:

--driver off the ground is never good. Red flags are out to mark the tee boxes, looks like concrete boxes are on the way.
- a couple port-a-potties would be great. i mean it is a lotta walking,
-- some benches wouldn't hurt either. With all those hills you need somewhere to rest your feet.
--Tee signs are not the great of description of of the hole layout but they are somewhat understanding.
--some garbage cans would be nice. I noticed some trash over the place. bottles, fast food bags,

Other Thoughts:

since there has never been a course in this area before i feel like so many people drives past this big park and wonder what those metal poles with chains and yellow circles on top of them are.

The South Side has a Disc Golf Park! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 10, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course has some excellent drives and there are many challenging shots to delight all levels of players. Two concrete tee settings on all holes, except 4, will make it suitable for beginners and veterans. The hill comes into play on the first ten holes. 300+foot shots are extended when having to throw uphill. Three holes are over 500' feet. Many are over four hundred feet. Two water shots on the regular course are doable and should not stress a novice thrower too much. Old growth trees make some nice obstacles to throw around. The markers are easy to spot and the course is well laid out. Recent changes have the course starting to the east of the parking lot along the fence of the driving range. All tees have the drive number stamped on them.

Cons:

The flat part of the course can be bit soggy in the spring or after a heavy rain. On windy days, the drives will play considerably longer due to the openness of the park thus earning the moniker Evergale. Make sure to bring a floater for the water shots. You will thank me later. The swamp on 7-8 is shallow but cattails will make finding an errant shot nearly impossible. Lastly, too many people are using the fairways to walk dogs without a leash.

Other Thoughts:

Garbage cans have been placed throughout the park however no benches anywhere. Washrooms are in white building next to Tee 1. Plenty of free golf balls to be found especially on the front nine. Ground crews are working on improving the drainage of the park.

The hill on the east is no ordinary topography but the eastern ridge of the Des Plaines River Valley. Thus, a series of heavy rains will produce voluminous runoff that will cause soggy fairways. The lake on seven and eight, was supposed to be temporary, but this year is a permanent fixture. A major drain project on six is underway to remove that lake.
