TOUGH COURSE 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 2, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

In the fall you won't find a more beautiful setting anywhere. I play here 2 or 3 times a month and it can be a tough course, especially when the wind is blowing. I have a much tougher time scoring here than at Banklick, which is considered a much tougher course. Holes 2, 3, and 4 always seem to be windy. I have lost more discs in the water on #4 than all other courses I have played combined. The water near 2,3,4,7, and 9 can jump up and grab you. Holes 14 and 17 are both under 300 feet, but require a shot down a narrow, tree lined fairway. Holes 1,16, and 18 are all well over 450 feet so a 3 is no gimme, even though they are all wide open. The new #6 is 250 feet straight downhill, but it plays different each time, again because of the wind. Just aim low and let it rip.

Cons:

Lots of people consider Jolly dull and boring. I think the problem is that many of the holes are over 350 feet so a deuce is tough, but the openess makes a 5 unlikely as well. There is not much risk vs reward decisions here. Sometimes the fisherman can be a problem.

Other Thoughts:

The setting here, especially in the fall is just beautiful.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 29, 2005 Played the course:once

Pros:

Scenic course with a few holes near a lake. Mostly open and with some longer holes if you want a chance to rip some drives. Most holes are flat, but you do play up and down this one big hill. The tee signs are smaller but still give good info.

Two holes were especially nice. #2 plays over the water to a peninsula. #17 is a great hole that requires a low, straight tee shot as the fairway is lined with a row of large trees on both sides.

Cons:

Natural tees. The stretch of holes that circled the park were a little tricky to navigate, and played close to other aspects of the park. Hole #11 is tight and a little ridiculous, and uncharacteristic of the rest of the park (just look at the picture!)

I vaguely remember something shady about #12 as well- either couldn't find it, or no basket, or out of the way, and there is no picture of it on this site, so someone else must have the same problem!!!

Other Thoughts:

Water is nearby for #3 and #4, but shouldn't be a factor for most people.

There was an entrance gate, but we parked in the gravel lot just before the gate and walked to hole #1 avoiding having to pay (by direction of the gate worker). But according to this site you no longer have to pay.

Overall not a bad course, but not a great one either. The lake is nice, and about half of the holes are pretty good. But it might get a little boring for some people as there are a few holes that are just a tee and a basket in an open field.

So many awesome alternatives nearby, but there are also some worse courses in this area, too.

Meeeh 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 29, 2006 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course plays along the edge of a lake, and is picturesque. AJ Jolly offers the opportunity to really crush a drive on several holes, but most of the tee shots play around 300 feet.

There are a few holes where the water comes into play, and even though it is manageable, it makes for an interesting shot.

There are a few really neat holes at this course, which make it stand out from others in the area.

Cons:

The layout is somewhat confusing to someone playing it for the first time.

A few of the holes went near park roads, or pavillions where people have picnic lunches.

Other Thoughts:

This course is physically very beautiful and well maintained. This course may not be as challenging or versatile as the others in the area, but it is worth playing if you are spending time in the area.

Banklick and Idlewild are just up the road.

Not Bad...Not Great 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 11, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

A.J. Jolly's best attribute is its proximity to other top-notch courses like Banklick and Idlewild. Of course, if you're in the area, you should play either of those before this one. The course is moderately challenging. I especially like #2 which dares you to throw directly over the lake. The distance isn't unreachable, but if you shank it, you could lose your disc.

Another "pro" is the course location next to a large lake.

Cons:

Not technical enough and windy

Picturesque 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 23, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Scenic park with some nice lake views. Nice tee signs and the park was well maintained.

Cons:

Not much terrain variety. Most holes play relatively flat. The course was also a little tough to navigate even with the map.

Other Thoughts:

A. J. Jolly wasn't terribly difficult or particularly memorable but it was a decent course overall and I enjoyed my round here.

Most holes play relatively free of obstacles so there is a decent amount of drive then putt going on. There are a few longer holes where that isn't the case and also a few holes featuring water hazards and trees to change things up.

This course is off the beaten path a bit and with so many other great courses closer to the city I'd be hard pressed to recommend making the drive out here solely to play a round here.

On the other hand, if you're already near-by or you've had your fill of Idlewild/Banklick/Mt. Airy then it's most definitely worth a stop.

fine 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 1, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

This course has a few creative and difficult holes, a couple of them including very real water hazards. There are also a couple of holes that use tree "corridors" well to provide a challenging shot.

Cons:

Although this may be a small issue for most people, it drove me crazy: there's goose poo every where. The smell permeates the air. There are also some drainage issues on the front 5. In the back, holes 11 and 12 are out of place on what is an otherwise open course. They're short, heavily wooded holes that are more about muscling it through brush than throwing with any finesse.

Other Thoughts:

Not a course that I'd drive to play again. If in the area, I suggest Banklick over this one.

Nice Park...enjoyable course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 4, 2005 Played the course:never

Pros:

This course has some beautiful lake views. A well groomed series of meadows. Baskets are in good positions. It is not overly easy and not overly difficult. Requires uphill, and down hill negotiation skills.

Cons:

It can be windy. It is difficult to follow for guests. Park is off the beaten path for sure.

Other Thoughts:

While it is not on par with a handful of other Cincy area courses, (Idlewild, Mt. Airy, and Banklick) I would consider this course the best of the second tier. I didn't shoot particularly as well as I would have hoped but hey, we all have those days.
