If You're in the Neighborhood... 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 10, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a fun play, mostly open but with a few memorable holes

+ Good use of elevation

+ Two sets of tees. While the "back" tees mostly add a little bit of distance, there are a few that cleverly change the shape of the hole. Most notably is Hole #2: wide open from the White tee, but a narrow downhill chute with a clump of trees dead in the middle for the Blue tee... a great opportunity for a roller!

+ This is a mixed use property for a big church. The approach area on Hole #6 appears to be a small replica of the Mount where Jesus was crucified, with large wooden crosses

+ Hole #8 is a memorable, fun throw across an overgrown valley - with danger right up to the green perched on the other side. It's the best hole here, and worth the visit

Cons:

- Could not find the back tee for Hole #3 - no sign

- Hole #7 plays mostly along a walk, which the throwing line actually crosses. A recipe for pedestrian injury or delays in play

- The very large church parking lot borders tees for #1, #4 and #8, so you can have people jumping on at different places, which can interfere with the flow of play. Not really a big deal, and not a "con" at all when the course isn't crowded. So maybe this is just my personal hangup (but I hate it when a group suddenly appears in front or behind me - where did THEY come from???)

Other Thoughts:

COURSE AMENITIES SUMMARY:
Two sets of poured tees, very good signage and baskets, very cart friendly, bathrooms on premises

~ A fun play that's not a destination itself, but well worth putting into a bagging run in the area (this was our second of 10 courses that day - we played from dawn until dusk)

~ The name of the place made me think I was going to see roller coasters, but I think the "adventure" part is Jesus

Pros:

Three large concrete tee pads on the first three holes. Beginner (red) tees are significantly easier but still involve course features which keeps them from being boring. A good family course where people of varying levels can play together. Scorecards with course map near the first tee. Plenty of parking. Bathrooms at course start - these were closed for the season when I played but the church office was open and let me use their bathroom before and after my round. Playground available. Park is very attractive and clean; grass was well-mown. There is a practice basket with a good grassy area around it for putting. Navigation was mostly easy due to map (see hole-by-hole below). Brand new DiscCatcher baskets which caught very well. The white tees are great for the recreation player. The blue tees provide a longer challenge but not so long that the rec player can't move up to them. Undulating ground lends some challenge to this mostly open course. Close to an I-81 exit. Overall fun and a good experience.

Cons:

No signs on the holes; no tee pads for the last 6 holes, just flags (mostly). Mostly wide open with only a few obstacles (see hole-by-hole). Navigation without the map would be hard; even with it, some of the tee locations were unclear. There are a few holes where you throw near roads and walking paths - a couple of blind shots. Didn't drain well in a few spots (although nothing horrendous). In some cases, the long (blue) tees only add a seemingly insignificant amount of distance on the same line. Holes 2 and 3 play near an athletic field. Hole 6 has its own special problem (see below). It is close to I-81 so the traffic noise takes some of the charm away. Only 9 baskets. When the rest of the tee pads go in - my rating goes up half a disc.

Other Thoughts:

I went around twice to play both the white (medium) and blue (long) tees. The course is on the property of a church so behave accordingly.

Hole 1 is a nice starter. It is straight with a gully near the basket. The white and blue tees require throwing past a playground but it is not really in play;the red tee is past the playground on the edge of the gully so the beginner still gets the fun of throwing over it. This is an example of a hole where the blue and white tees have the same line - the map says 257 feet vs 317 but it felt like the difference was much less. The gully is easy to retrieve discs from.

Hole 2 (293/370) throws over a corner of a soccer field to a basket up on a hill nestled among a few trees. Fine.

Hole 3 (400/509) throws from the ridge behind 2's basket to a basket across a walking path. Hook it as a RHBH and you end up on the soccer field; hook it as a LHBH and you end up in someone's backyard. But in both cases, there is plenty of margin.

Hole 4 (420/480) is another where the two tees have the same line. Don't aim for the basket you see - that is #5. The basket for #4 is nestled behind the hill on the right in the far corner. There is a property on top of the hill so if you RHBH spike hyzer, you risk landing on that property.

Hole 5 (233/324) throws from a ridge to a basket on a hillside. The blue tee is directly behind #4's basket up the hill. To get to the white tee, you need to walk to the red tee and then turn up the hill. Pretty easy hole - even with my weenie arm, I deuced it from both tees. But fun.

Hole 6 (350/491) is probably the signature hole on the course. The blue tee is on top of the hill (just keep walking up after #5's basket); the white tee is on a grass path which is best reached by following the walking path to the right of the hill to the first grassy passage on the left. More trees in play here and the basket is well away with undulations in between. So what's the problem (besides the green being very mushy)? More than halfway to the basket is a prayer garden with benches and other man-made objects. It is very easy (if not inevitable) that you will land a disc in there.

Hole 7 (265/338) is a long walk from #6 along the paved path behind the church. Without a map, you would be unlikely to find it. The blue tee was not marked but I could figure out where it should be from the map. You throw along the walking path with a single large metal pole as the obstacle. There is a ridge on the left and the basket is located on that ridge a good ways down. One problem here is that the parking lot is on the other side of the ridge (not visible from the tees) so you need to stay to the right of the ridge.

Hole 8 (276/321) throws over another gully to a basket up on a plateau. The red tee is at the edge of the gully so beginners get to throw across it as well. There are some cattails and prickers if you stray to the right with medium disc loss possibility. Again I had to guess at the blue tee.

Hole 9 (335/420) throws from near the road - the blue tee wasn't marked so I just threw from the road near the bridge. The basket is very near a walking path. Both rounds my drive landed within 20 feet of the path.

Overall it was fun. If you don't like wide-open courses then stay away but otherwise I think anyone would enjoy this course. It is located near a number of other courses so touring around and hitting several of them is a good day out. I'll upload the course map later when I have time. I will also return when the rest of the tee pads are in and update my review. Holes 4 through 6 are my favorite part of the course. Holes 1 through 3 were my second favorite.
