Pros:
The Hughes Stadium course is set up in a large basin area of high desert scrub land. Currently there are trees planted (and being watered) and as they mature, the course will be ever-changing. As of now, they don't factor in much. The course features a great new course sign and map at the beginning along with sani-cans, both garbage and recycling containers, a bicycle locking rack and a practice basket. The baskets are new and on this course especially, it would have been great to have had the big numbers on top. This course definitely has length going for it. Only one hole is shorter than 300' and that is a problem in my eyes. I would have liked to seen a little more variety in the hole length.
There are usually two basket placements marked on each of the great new tee signs, either in the red or the blue position. The problem is I never knew which position the basket was in. Sometimes the difference is just a matter of 25 feet, other holes it could be 150 feet or more. I have a simple easy solution here. Drill a 1/4 inch hole in the blue and red squares on the tee signs. Insert a small bolt and waher through whichever color position the basket is currently in. Whoever changes the basket position also changes the bolt/washer. Player approaches pad, checks signfor baskets position. Simple system which works great!
# 13, the hole with the elevated basket is a great piece of engineering and a nice addition to the course.
Cons:
I'm afraid that things out here, like the baskets and wonderful signage, are going to get trashed before the trees grow in enough to change the feel of the course.
Also I felt the course had a couple of serious design flaws. Previous reviewers have mentioned some of them such as long straight holes, etc.
Four out the first 10 holes were almost exactly alike. That is 300' holes uphill to basket perched atop a hill. I quickly grew tedious with these holes.
You throw uphill to the # 3 basket. But then you walk DOWN the hill to the 4 teepad so you can then throw up the hill to the # 4 basket. Why not have a pad up near the # 3 basket and then have an epic 750' throw across the entire basin to the # 4 basket.
And then after putting out on # 6, you walk down the hill to the # 7 teepad. Why not place the # 7 on the hill closer to the # 6 basket? And then you have added a nice little downhill throw for 7.
Other Thoughts:
I'm no different than other disc golfer. I want to throw downhill. I want epic downhill throws. I love short downhill, touch ACE runs. This course design doesn't maximize the potential for more of these kinds of throws. It almost does the opposite and seemingly keeps you constantly throwing uphill.
As the trees mature, the nature of this course will change, but that will take year and years. In the meantime, the flawed design features should be improved to lure more players out here. Eldora Park is such a gem. It's going to take a tad bit more work here to get the players to come. The foundation of a awfully nice course is in place. Now, I think, it just needs to refined a little around the edges (hills).
