18 holes on 9, done very well!

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 5, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Two sets of DISCatchers on every hole, all in great shape, no rust and brightly colored, Red in the short position and Yellow (Gold) in the long position. These were very easy to spot through the partial woods on most holes.
Two level concretes tees on every hole, brushed to a textured finish so they aren't slick when wet. Most provided different looks at the hole with just 3 adding only distance.
Two great tee signs at every tee, showing the path to both baskets and distance to both baskets.
Good mix of holes: going left and right through partial woods, a wide open #1 and mostly wooded #9, even a Par 4.
Because of the small size of the park, having the multiple baskets is probably the only way to get 18 holes here, and it works pretty well.
Located in a nice park in east Orlando only about a mile from the Airport (hence the name). If planes taking off directly overhead bothers you, then this would be a Con. But it would be the perfect "layover" course. Tons of restaurants and hotels in the area, very convenient if you are in the area.

Cons:

The short, Red, tee pads were smaller than the Blues. The way this course is laid out, four different layouts, both tees should be the same size.
There are a few holes where the Red basket is pretty much in line with the Gold basket from the tee. So much in line, that a shot to the Gold basket could hit the Red basket. But, as the saying goes, "it was there when you threw".
Clearly defined fairways on all holes except #8, after clearing the tunnel off the tee, I had a tough time finding a true line to the baskets, of course that could have been just me, on my first time through.
The grass/weeds on #9 were pretty long, probably tough to get a mower in there.

Other Thoughts:

Airport Lakes is one of the better 18 holes on 9 fairways courses I have played. Two great baskets and two concrete tee pads on each hole make this more like an 18 hole course than most. They don't label the tees as 1-18 but rather 1-9 and another 1-9 B (Blue) pads.
As mentioned above, most of the tees provide a different look at the baskets, but #3 and #8 are right in line. Mostly because they are hemmed in by the property line, but both Blue tees have a tighter line to hit off the tee.
Of the 4 different layouts the shortest to longest is a difference of about 900', and ironic enough, the two middle layouts (Red to Gold and Blue to Red) come in a total of 5' different, just under 2600'. That was how I got my 18 in, Red tees to Gold then Blue tees to Red, that way I got to see all the tees and all the baskets.
Don't be fooled on the wide open #1, that's your warm up hole, everything else is in the assorted trees, Palms and Palm bushes after that. Palm bushes really don't allow a disc through, much like thick brush, only its easier to find your plastic.
While I mentioned that several holes have both baskets in line with each other (actually #1 does also, but those are so far apart, its a minor issue) the other half are so far apart, they create truly unique holes. This is the case on #2, #5, #8 and #9.
Looking back through all the previous reviews, all are 2.5,3, or 3.5, a pretty solid consensus. They average out to 2.93 at this writing, and I am surprised this course is below the 3.0 level. It just seems like a better course than that, especially considering the upscale area where it is located.
So, if you are flying in or out of MCO, maybe for a Cruise or one of the Theme parks, be sure to pack some discs, Airport Lakes is very close and you won't be disappointed playing there.

Nice but lots of leaves 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 15, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- 9 quick holes, with 2 pads and 2 baskets. So it can be played 4 times.
- Clean, well kept, no trash.
- Close to airport, hotels, food and 436.
- Has bathrooms and water.

Cons:

The next 3 will not change. It's scarey because of snakes.
- Ground is covered in leaves from hole 3-9.
- Has many downed trees, sticks, logs and stuff.
- Has ground bushes.

- To many holes in the forest.
- There is no practice area to putt.
- They rarely cut the grass on holes 1, 2, 9. Grass gets waist high sometimes. But hey, they do cut the soccer fields every week.

Other Thoughts:

With a 1/2 mil grant from the state, it is classified as a green space. As such, the park rangers can not clean up the leaves, branches or anything. They'd have to get permission from the state. As such, it will stay the same. It sucks cause the leaves and junk on the ground is where snakes like to hide. There is airplane noise, but jeeze, no biggie. The guys cutting the lawn make more noise. Not a issue. Also, it's FLORIDA. Florida is flat just above sea level. Hole 1 is on a fake retainer hill, but the others are flat. That's Florida.

Great Small Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 15, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Bathroom Facilities! It's always fantastic when there is a bathroom at DG courses. Multiple pads and baskets fit into a small piece of land - can easily see room for expansion as well

Cons:

Some of the holes were a tad short, definitely a midrange and putter course, I did use a driver on a couple of the longer holes, but only for a skip shot.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed the course, played short to short and then long to short with my gf. This is a great beginner and intermediate course. My home course is Debary and there are possiblities for some REALLY long holes at that course. This one is nice, has some twists and turns, nicely shaded so you're not stuck out in the sun the entire time.

9 holes, 36 options 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 24, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a well designed "9 hole" course on a relatively small piece of land. But don't let the 9 holes fool you. There are two sets of pins and tees on each hole which legitimately make for 36 holes for play. Every pin has a tee sign with pretty accurate distances and solid cement tee pads.

The holes themselves are well designed given the land available for use. The first hole is really the only open hole, after that its all wooded, but fair. While some holes play better from certain pin/tee locations, overall there are no bad options.

This is an excellent introduction into wooded golf for the new player and the fairways, while tight, give legitimate lines and options. Its a good course to learn some of the basics of shot shaping which you may not pick up on tougher courses in the area or the more open options around town.

Cons:

The holes themselves are pretty short. With the exception of hole 6 and 8 you definitely could get away playing this course with your favorite midrange and putter. For experienced players this is not a course that is going to challenge you very much. Even from the "all long" setup (blue to gold) you should be able to put yourself within the putting circle on nearly every hole.

This course is just north of the airport, meaning there are planes taking off and landing all the time, which are loud and can get annoying if you're playing with friends.

Given the fact that there are two sets of tees and 2 permanent pins on each hole I'm not even going to count the "9 holes" as a con for this course.

Other Thoughts:

While this is not a course you would find yourself playing all the time given the other good courses in town if you're in southeast Orlando or staying near the airport this is the only good close option. Given the multiple pins you can really tailor the round to how much time you have.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 15, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Variety of options to satisfy all skill levels
Other than Hole 1 and parts of hole 2&9, well shaded for summer play.
Can be a quick round for layovers
Clear signage
Great place to practice control
2 baskets and tees per hole

Cons:

Are vines that can be tripped over
A few holes are a bit close to one another
Trees can not be beginner friendly

Other Thoughts:

This is my favorite course in Orlando fro a quick round. A nice variety of throws and the short to long then long to short combo make a great 18 hole run.
