Most challenging course in the area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 16, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Very challenging for the average player. Tight wooded shots and tough pin placements can make this a frustrating play if you aren't on your game. You can tell the designer/maintainers aren't casual players.

Course has been much improved in the last year. A lot of work has been done.

More elevation changes by far than any other course in Okaloosa county.

Good course for lefties or flickers. I haven't done a count, but it seems like there are more fairways that move to the right than there are that move to the left.

Teepads just got "turfed" and there are new baskets on most holes for an alternate shot. Pro pad areas have been added still kinda rough.

Wilderness camping on-site.

Cons:

Some of the greens aren't cleared out past 15' or so. It's pretty frustrating to pure a drive or approach shot, end up 20' feet out and have zero shot at the basket. Lots of greens have underbrush as close as 12' from the basket. I don't mind having to lean out or having a challenging shot, but no shot inside the circle is not good. I really hope they work on this.

Watch for "stobs" sticking up on the fairways. The local club has been doing a lot of clearing on the course and the small stumps can trip you up if you dont watch your step.

The rough is rough. Very rough.

Some tee signs are wrong and new basket locations aren't shown.

This is definitely a course you can lose a disc on. (That may be a "pro"...)

Other Thoughts:

Visitors must get a day pass from Jackson Guard, locals need a yearly pass. This course is on DOD property. Do yourself a favor and don't go without getting a pass!

The following link will take you directly to the permit that you need to play the course. $5 for the day, $20 for the year.

Good, Varied Course That Underachieves 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 10, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

18-hole course in a primitive campsite area with a nice variety of challenges, including turns, narrow fairways and, a phrase you don't hear in Florida, elevation changes.
This course rewards accuracy.
Benches at most of the holes.
Appropriate signage that marks tees and the next holes, especially on the front nine.
Encountered few other players, thus crowds are a non-factor.
There is even a mando hole for those looking for such a thing.
Walking one hole to the next is a lot like trail hiking, if one likes that sort of thing.
A modest, covered picnic area somewhat close to the first tee.

Cons:

Requires a pass from Jackson Guard to have access to Anderson Pond.
Tee boxes are loose sand and dirt.
Fairways are overgrown with tall grass. Spotter is recommended as errant throws means wading through thick, barb brush (wear pants to avoid what can be some serious scratches). Would not take much to lose a disc on any of the 18 holes.
An overthrow on a hole (can't remember exactly which one) on the front 9 could end up in water.
Signage could be improved on the back nine. Not always clear where the baskets are located as most are not visible from the tee. While most tee areas were signed well and obvious, there was a hole on the back 9 where our group walked past the tee and to the basket.
Hole 17 is a swamp after a rain.
Hole 17 also has stairs that lead down to the fairway, and with the otherwise primitive nature of the course, disc-toting buggies are not recommended.
Walking one hole to the next is a lot like trail hiking, if you don't like that sort of thing.
Playing in the summertime could mean encounters with snakes and hives of bees.

Other Thoughts:

This course has arguably the best variety of holes in the immediate FWB/Niceville area. However, it is shackled by the lack of routine maintenance and brutal vegetation off the fairway. This course is worth playing at least once (some will enjoy it, some will hate it) and best played during the cooler months.

Anderson Pond Disc Golf Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 5, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Narrow fairways
- Secluded course (no walkers, runners, etc)
- Challenging course

Cons:

- Poorly maintained
- Poorly marked

Other Thoughts:

The Anderson Pond course is a valuable asset to Okaloosa County's disc golf courses with its technical shots and narrow fairways. It is a great course for a player looking for a challenging course. The rough is really tough. There are plenty of briars, thorns, tall grass, and bushes to brush up against, which gets annoying. I would advise players to play in jeans/long pants to avoid getting torn up by the underbrush. Undoubtedly, there is an abundance of snakes, but thankfully, I didn't find any when I played. The course is overall unkempt, but a mowing is all it would take to knock it back in shape. The signage is a real problem at the course. There are no distance markings, or even signs telling players where the holes are. Difficult to find hole one, but once you do, it is easy to navigate the rest of the course.
