APU - So much wrong, yet so much right 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 26, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

- 9 Lightning DB-5 baskets of the portable nature in decent enough shape. Hole 2 is hanging under a tree, about 6' off the ground for a little variety as you get rolling into the meat of the course.
- 8 roughed out natural tee areas - once you find them they're obvious - and 1 tee(Hole 9) from a concrete path. Not really good natural tees but I've seen worse.
- Mixed hole styles and types - starting out open with some mature trees around the greens, then into tightly wooded trail-style holes, a couple natural wooded holes, and back out to the campus proper to wrap the round up. Very nice mix and flow here. Right and left turning tee shots are needed to score well and there's one multi-throw hole(#4).
- Good diversity in hole lengths for an intermediate track. Distances range from 115'-350'. Nothing monotonous from this standpoint, using a number of different discs off the tee will be required.
- Nice use of elevation for a random college course. Everything from mild to drastic, only a couple holes play relatively flat from tee to pin, and most have some danger of fading well off course. Of the multitude of greater Anchorage area 9ers, this seemed to be the most diverse from an elevation standpoint.
- Beautiful scenery with the forest and lovely mountain views.
- Free to play.

Cons:

- The course has zero infrastructure outside of the targets. No course map, tee signs/surface, or directional aids. No way to follow this bad boy without UDisc and even then a few tees and a target took me a bit of wandering to find. Tee for Hole 3 is just above the service road/trail w a decent sized rock/mini boulder at the front. Tee for Hole 5 - follow the service road/trail past 4's target, down and left around the bend, it's just off the trail left, shooting ~155° back the direction you just came from, right of the giant satellite. The rest were pretty quick finds.
- The dirt tees are rough and not real swell. Wouldn't play here after rain or in melting snow.
- The targets. Old, single-chain, portables that aren't all super level, and being gray they are tough to spot, particularly those in the woods. Looks like they had some bright orange tape on the poles at some point but that's faded beyond helpfulness. 3, 4, and 5 are the biggest offenders as the targets for 3 and 4 are tucked just off the left and right(respectively) of the service road/trail near trees. 5's target is just near some trees that make it hard to see.
- A handful of safety concerns, mostly where the course plays through campus proper(not in the woods) - namely a few walking paths, roads, and parking lots. Also, tee areas for 4 and 6 are a bit close to the previous targets. Not supposed to play when school's in session and I don't see this place getting heavy traffic so shouldn't create any huge issues.
- The rough is a touch wild but not unmanageable with appropriately colored discs.

Other Thoughts:

Despite all the issues, when it came down to it, I really enjoyed the golf. I played on a chilly Sunday morning, a few days after anchorage got a little snow, most of which was melted off on campus but the mountains were completely covered and gorgeous. The flow is good, holes are diverse and there's a nice balance. There's even a couple signature type designs. If infrastructure and amenities are your big concerns you should skip this one. If you enjoy courses purely for the play aspect, AUP should entertain. If you play, hopefully this review helps a little with navigation. I also uploaded a full set of pics which should be of use as well. Rating was sort of tough here but I'll lean on the rather enjoyable golf and pleasant atmosphere and call it a 1.5.
