What a beating, what a great course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 6, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tee sign on almost every hole
short and long cement tee pads on almost every hole
Several 2 shot holes
great use of natural fairways

Cons:

The rough is rough, you don't want to be off the fairways
LOTS of rocks to chew up your discs
Alternate holes were rough

Other Thoughts:

Wow, Austin has some good courses, this is one of them for sure.

I do not recommend playing this course by yourself, there are several holes you need a spotter for.

This is a Church that has some land they made available for a disc golf course, and what a piece of land. John Houck is a good job (as always) laying out this course. Parking is literally on the dam, There is a kiosk map at the entrance to the course, a short walk down the path (that could use some markings, I walked down the wrong path the first time) to hole 1.

After these first 3 holes, I was super excited about playing this course. I played from the blue (long) because there is where the tee signs were.

Hole one starts off with a reachable shot, don't throw too far off the left or you are down the hill.

Hole two is a true 2 shot hole throwing across a ravine up and to the right.

Hole 3, another two shot hole throwing mostly open with a dogleg to the left and down the hill and across the small creek.

Hole 4 takes advantage of the natural fairways with a little work. A 2 shot fairway running to the right.

Then you get some fun little holes looking for 2's. 5, 6 and 7

Then back to some 2 shot holes, 8, 9, 10, all taking advantage of natural fairways.

11 has you throwing up the hill with a tight fairway.

Then you have two alternate holes.

Hole 11A plays around 300 ft up the hill, this is an awkward angle to throw your drive with almost no fairway. We had to walk up 1/2 way to the basket before we could even see it.

The fairway consist of short shrubbery that is nasty to get into.

Hole 11B is almost the same shot going back down the hill. REMEMBER, your disc is going to float, throw a mid-range and HAVE A SPOTTER. The guys I was playing with threw drivers, both landing way to the left of the basket, I threw a classic rock and landed 20 ft from the basket (but behind a cedar tree) This hole also does not have much of a fairway.

Then to hole 12, a similar shot to hole 11B in that is is downhill and the shot is over the tree's. There is a clear area at 300ft between holes 9 and 10's tee. The basket is past this after another tree line. There is a nice gape between clear areas.

then to the swamp hole #13, watch your step, water table is high here and most of the fairway is muddy.

Hole 14 is another classic John Houck two shot fairway down and too the left.

Hole 15 looks easy enough, till you overthrow the basket with that fall off behind it.

16 is a nice longer tunnel shot with a hill on the left hand side.

17 is a good opportunity for a 2, just don't throw to the right or your in the pond.

18 has some distance but is another open hole, over a walking bridge and to a nice grassy green, but a shot landing to the left of this hole is looking at the pond.

In all, this is a well rounded course that makes you use every shot in your bag. Lots of risk reward shots.

Now for the question, would I play here again?

Yes, This is a course I WANT to play again now that I have played it once. I feel I left a lot of good shots out there. I want redemption. I didn't keep track of my score, but it was not good.

Review 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 17, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has great holes. It is very challenging with technical shots. It has great variety with its long and short tees. It is a very scenic layout, and it is fairly easy to find you way around. It isn't that busy so you will not get backed up on it. It is one of the best courses in Austin. I think that it is one of the most underrated courses in Austin

Cons:

-No restrooms
-No water facilities

Other Thoughts:

This course should be up there with some of the best courses in Austin. Lets get it there!

Amazing course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 25, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Newly added concrete boxes. The pro boxes on this course offer an extremely challenging and diverse round of golf. Despite playing this course 30 plus times I am still humbled by the technical difficulties and beauty of it every time I play. Not a good course for a begining player unless you want to play the red tees. Lots of trees and hills. Be sure to play the bonus holes. Ongoing construction has seen the course make up change over the last year. Especially in the back nine. If there is one course in Austin you have a chance to play make it this one. There are trash cans and benchs throughout the course.

Cons:

The red tees are far to easy. I understand that the effort was to make the course friendly for the whole family, but the difference is worlds apart from the pros. There is not alot of communication about the construction projects. You might show up to play and the course will be closed.

Other Thoughts:

Built on the Austin Bible Ridge church grounds. I would like to show appriciation to them for commisioning such an amazing course and opening it to the public. Please be mindful that is on church property and be respectful. Truely one of the best courses in Texas. Play with a local or get a map.

HELL YA!!!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 22, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

WOW!!! This course is truly awesome! You can tell after about 2 holes that this is a Houck course if you've played his courses before. This course has every single shot and you will use every single one that you have. You will have to throw far, throw accurate, and bang those putts, or your score will skyrocket in a hurry....and then some. The course map upfront is a help for newcomers and I highly recommend if this is your first time out here, take a pic of it or get a map cause you will play to a wrong basket and/or need it for navigation issues. Great discatchers are a great sight and help see where you need to go. The signs are awesome and help find the hole for the most part as well. This is truly for the hardcore golfer and you will want to have to play that way or you will hate it. You have to be able to place a shot many times just to get another. Elevation is super cool, especially on B, in which the view is one of the best for sure. The elevation and natural obstacles are great on the greens as well always making a good putt crucial! I like the mulch tees for the most part but they are also a negative as some are very rough. The logged fairways are pretty cool and remind me of a private course up here.

Cons:

Navigation can be a hassle here but not too bad as long as you have a little patience and don't mind walking to find some baskets, although I did throw to a wrong basket on one hole costing me 2 strokes. The terrain can be brutal on knees and ankles if you don't pay attention, as my partner rolled his ankle pretty good. As stated before, mulch tees, they are great where they are taken care of, but there are many areas that there are rocks or stumps and sometimes both making for bad footing at times. The fairways of 12 and I think 8/9 cross and there are issues there Im sure when the course is packed. Poor drainage on 13 and 18 make for a muddy transition in those fairways. Still a little rough but Im sure that will be taken care of with people playing this gem.

Other Thoughts:

This course is one of the best Ive played and moved in the top 5 of mine after just one play! Worth a stop anytime in the area.

Pros:

Very well managed course and baskets are well marked for the most part.

Cons:

Lots of climbing and requires good shoes for safe footing.

Other Thoughts:

No complaints for the most part. The course is a nice course but not for the feint of heart. Enjoyed the brisk workout with the occasional break to find a misplaced disc. Look forward to playing this course more regularly.

You will be challenged 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 15, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Beautiful course. The leaves are turning, the isolated feeling of being in the woods, hilly terrain, it's all here.

Great signs. I would expect nothing less from HouckDesign.

Elevation changes. Seems like the basket is never on the same plane from the one you throw from, the basket is everywhere. Uphill, downhill, both steep and gradual, are present. The changes place a premium on placement.

*Greatest example? Bonus holes. "A" feels like it is literally straight up. "B" is a compliment to that, and the most picturesque, a throw "off the top of the world" it seems.

All shots are tested and all shots can be used. Backhand, forehand, thumber, roller, if it's in your bag of tricks, you can use it. Left, right and straight, are all here as this course favors all-handedness.

Intermediate to pro will find fun in such a challenging and tough course.

Cons:

Beginners should go somewhere else, honestly. You will not have fun, you will lose a disc and you will hate this sport if you come out to this course. This course will punish, relentlessly, stray shots, bad releases, bad form, etc. Intermediate to Pro only for the obvious reason; it's TOUGH!

Tee boxes need a face lift. They are in prime spots, no complaint about placement, but the condition they are in is mediocre at best. Uneven and loose gravel and dirt from natural tees are just a nuisance. Something consistent from tee to tee, like rubber mats or, if a lot of work was put in, concrete, would make this a championship wooded course.

Other Thoughts:

I'll say it again: this is a HARD course. This course puts a premium on consistent shot placement, the ability to play elevation changes, and the confidence to hit very specific lines and elevated putts. All in all, I found this course to be one of the most challenging in the south Austin area and have minimal to complain about.

Austin's Finest 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 12, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-DISCatcher Pro's
-mulched tee boxes; Pro and Am
-Picturesque Hill Country scenery
-Creative holes that challenge most players
-Bonus Holes; Water Holes, Extreme Elevation
-Great signage, trails, benches, maps by hole #1

Cons:

-This course is extremely challenging, and amateur or new players that easily get discouraged may not enjoy it.
-Heavily wooded, w/ stumps on ground. Wear shoes with good grip.

Other Thoughts:

I feel fortunate to have such a great course in my city. Austin Ridge Bible is definitely one of the best courses in Texas.
Throwing from the "Top of the World," on bonus hole B is absolutely jaw dropping!
What makes this course so special is the combination of the hill country scenery and elevation make for a great hike. You ascend and descend your way through a disc golf mountain.
**Update**
After playing more disc golf courses in Texas over 2010, I felt obligated to change my wording of "one of the best courses in Central Texas," to simply one of the best in the state. Enjoy.

First outing this weekend 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 5, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Absolute variety of shots. from low and technical, big throws, water shots and a truly epic elevation change coming down off B. They definetly deserve the 'this course has it all' sticker on their signs. I reccommend going with at least one friend for moral support. By the time you climb the hill to the top of A you'll need that backup.

Cons:

14-18 closed for parking lot construction

Other Thoughts:

After a few years of the Austin DG scene walking the trails and fairways this will be in competetion for the title of 'best in the ATX'

Best Course Ever 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 18, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is one of, if not the best course I've ever played. This course has it all, great shot selection, beautiful and difficult holes, sweet ace runs, elevation, breath taking vistas, and water, lots of water. The finishing stretch of 3 holes is one of the best and most fun I've played.

Cons:

Although the tee pads are great right now, I fear in time without installing concrete pads they might get rough. That said, as they are now, they work great and I'm sure they'll put them in at some point.

Other Thoughts:

Play this course, best course is Texas.

Austin's newest "must play" 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 14, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Fun....Challenging....Beautiful....this course has it all! Most holes are pretty tight off the tee. This course will test you and requires thought and creativity. There are elevation changes throughout the course, highlighted by the "bonus holes", between 11-12. (i think). Bonus hole "A" is straight up a hill and then you turn around on "B" to go back down. The view from the "B Hole" box is breath taking.

Cons:

Bring a map!!! It can be tough to find your way around if no one is there to guide you .

I wish they would change the location of, or clear out a couple trees around, the basket of #4. As is, there's really no clear line.

Other Thoughts:

Course is still in it's infancy. Lots of mulch still to be spread and it looks like they are going to lay more fairway/path timbers(think Circle C), so that should help with finding your way.

Overall, just a spectacular course!!!

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 11, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

where to start...This course has everything but a wide open field shot, and only one flat fairway. One of my personal flaws as a golfer has been not to throw as hard as I can and pick a spot to land my disc on. this course has helped me with that. when you pull into the parking lot, look at the highest hill in front of you. Right below the green water tanks is the basket for hole A. You can see the yellow band above the chains. this gives you an idea of what you are in for when you throw this course. The first time you play here expect to leave with a wedgie and no lunch money because it will bully you. as you get to know the course you cannot help but throw smarter rather than harder and you finish your round with two chances to donate plastic to the water gods. the course in its entirety was done by volounteers and donations. each hole was designed with love and mathmatics in respect to where you will want your disc to land. There is plenty of distance to cover, but throwing too far will cost strokes in the final tally. The view and the scenery are amazing and the water is the clearest I have seen in texas. How often can you see the bottom of a 15 ft deep pond in TX? There is ample parking for now. I can forsee the lot being full on more than one weekend of the year. The signage is now up and is topnotch

Cons:

It is almost unfair to list this as a con but the tees are currently mulch. I have spoken with people who work for the church to convince them of the need for concrete pads. I think they are making the right decision in waiting to make sure the tees are where they want them to be. The course is not completely finished yet but things happen very quickly. Cut brush is being removed and chipped on a regular basis. There are no restrooms in the course area, but if they were to install concrete tees, this course would move into the "best of the best" category

Other Thoughts:

A lot of people worked VERY hard on this course for free and most of them do not play disc golf yet. PLEASE use the trash cans they put out for you. This includes your our cig butts. Watch out for the bee tree on the right two thirds of the way down hole 16. When you play the A and B holes remember to turn around and take in the view. Do not be afraid to go up to the church and tell them thank you for building such a great course on a great piece of hill country. If you play in the summer take the amount of water you expect to drink and double it. Austin does not have another course with this much elevation change.

I have been talking with the office at the church to start a lost and found collection of discs. Although there is not one set up yet, I have a collection of discs that need to get back to their owners.I currently have a spreadsheet of found discs. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to post this so everyone can see, but leave out some info so that wareagle type people don't try to take advantage of this? if so shoot me a pm

Pros:

-Course is on a great chunk of Texas hill country
-Some of the most dramatic elevation changes of any course in or around Austin.
-Every kind of shot required.(hyzer, anhyzer, tomahawk, long, short, open, and serious tunnels)

Cons:

-woodchip teeboxes

Other Thoughts:

I'm a sucker for elevated tee shots, and this course does not dissapoint. The two challenge holes are the two steepest holes I've ever played . One straight up and the next straight down. After each hole, my buddy and I both sat back and said, " man that was a sweet ass hole." 20 holes in a row. This place is brand spanking new, so no tee signs yet( so bring a map the first time.) I saI'd when the metcenter opened that i was stoked to live in a town that kept opening up great new courses, but this place is above and beyond. Its already my favorite course in the Austin area.
