Bainbridge Island Welcomes A New Course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 9, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Battle Point Park is bustling county park with a plethora of activities with synthetic turf soccer fields, three softball/baseball fields, a popular walking path, a very cool children's playground and an excellent roller hockey rink. Having all these popular activities might prove problematic to the disc golf course's continued existence. I think the county has moved very cautiously in approving the course (currently on a trial basis) with the co-existence of the course and all these activities the main concern. I believe players will need to show that they can play and enjoy this course while exercising good judgement as regards to all these other park users.

The course will have both a summer and a winter design. Many holes will remain the same but four will be different based on a popular summer concert series and on another hole, with a shallow pond area which dries up during the summer. I like the fact that the designers have planned for this early on and actually will be changing some tee signs, so hopefully, players will be able to play it anytime without too many navigational issues.

The course plays at an recreational level with only one hole over 300', that being # 2 weighing in at a whopping 315'. Most are possible Ace runs and all are bird-able by anyone who has thrown before. This is a great course to bring that beginner or anyone who wants to get a quick 30 minute round in. There's little in the way of obstacles and losing and/or hunting for discs shouldn't be a problem.

The course starts next to the roller hockey rink and ends near the planetarium. The baskets are Liberty models purchased from a private course somewhere. They're great and have a thin metal number on top as well as yellow next tee arrows hanging below. The tee pads are graveled with a wooden border. I do worry about them becoming rutted and uneven with much usage. The signs are small round metal ones giving the distance and hole #.

Cons:

Not many.

My biggest concern and that of the county park's staff will be the safety issues and the park users interaction with the golfers.

The course is definitely recreational so if you're looking for a mighty challenge, this probably isn't the course for you.

The hard packed gravel pads will become rutted with use. Concrete or patio blocks would obviously be a better choice. Hopefully, they might be added in the future.

The maintenance folks who actually did the labor here placed the small tee signs right at the front left or right corners of the pads. They didn't bother me any as they're fairly low to the ground but some players may be a little concerned with them.

Other Thoughts:

As with most courses, there has been a lot of dialogue with the county, mostly about safety concerns. If this course proves popular and trouble free, another nine holes have already been planned over on the far side of the soccer fields. This area is kind of serene peaceful area, probably ideal for some Zen meditation or something. I hope to see it with it's golf course feel become a wonderful back nine addition to the front nine.

Executive type golf course for disks 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 12, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Wide open, no large hills to climb up and down. Great to bring your kids out to learn how to play disc golf. Good baskets. Placement of baskets gives even a good player a different look and throw each hole. Lots of birdies and maybe a few aces here and there.
(yellow arrows on baskets point the way to the next pad, kind of)

Cons:

First hole there is no signs directing you to the pad from any of the parking spots I went to. Only one trash can kind of near basket number 2 over to the left near the skating rink. (One could easily be put by 5 tee pad.

Some of the walkers on the paths are afraid of throwers. Spent some time talking to them to ensure them we are looking out for them.

Other Thoughts:

Good place to come and practice different type throws because the course is all grass...hard to lose a disk if you throw 10 or whatever while practicing a hyzer or something.
I enjoy the time...plan on taking my wife and a picnic basket some sunny day.

(tons of dogs which most were leased so good place to bring yours I think0

A wonderful neighborhood course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 17, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Open setting in beautiful multi-use park. Good for beginning and intermediate players but will still give better players some challenges. Two course layouts (Summer and Winter) with maps and scorecards available in the Links/Files tab.

Cons:

Gravel tee pads are required until park board decides to make the course permanent.
