Fun Morning on the River 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 25, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

- The course was well designed and utilized the available terrain features and views of the Niagara River.
- Easy to find the first hole conveniently located near the parking lot
- Multiple tees for multiple skill levels, a good mix of Par 3,4,5 holes
- Accurate course map on Scorecard provided

Cons:

- Only Amateur par was provided
- Occasional long walks between holes

Other Thoughts:

-During our round, the course was very muddy from recent rains and standing water.
- As a visitor to the area, I really appreciated the State Parks handout that provides info about courses within the NY State Parks.

Great challenge 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 12, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Great scenery
- Three tees, giving the player many options
- Many people thinks its a con, but I think the entry fee is a plus. The state keeps this park meticulously maintained, the grass is always cut and the park is clean. (For those of you who sneak in the back entrance, chip in with your buddies, $10 each, and you can get a whole car load in all summer long)
- Fair OB lines, little chance of losing a disc.
-Co-designed by national known course designer

Cons:

None that I can think of.

Other Thoughts:

My favorite local course. Open enough to let you use your drivers, with enough obstacles to make placement count on every hole.

Excellent use of the terrain, not only using the sled hill, but also the deceptive side-slopes where good placement is crucial. Just enough trees on each hole to make you think.

This is a different course each time you play due to the wind.

Amazing course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 11, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

.Good amount of long holes, with a few short finesse shot holes
.Park well maintained- grass cut, no litter, garbage bins at every hole
.Signs for each tee
.Concrete tee pads

Cons:

. $7 entry fee per car to park unless you go after 6 pm
. Pars are too easy- for example hole 1 is a par 4 from white and is about 300 or so feet down a hill. I shot 5 under here and have played course including Como, Black Diamond, Angry Apple, and The Ravine and at best shot 5 over

Other Thoughts:

.Overall awesome course, my favorite course around and I would definitely play again
. Some discs are sold there at the park building

Pros:

Best state park course in the western ny area. Tons of big air. Nice mix of flat and hill shots. Wind coming in off water plays a factor on more than one hole. All in my second favorite local course.

Cons:

None

Other Thoughts:

Course is laid out well and tees are marked pretty good.

Beaver Island DG 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 23, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Very well mapped out course that brings you around the entire beaver island state park. Very easy to navigate your way through the course (signs on each hole and arrows below the basket to the next hole). Great mix of par 3, 4, and 5's and great elevation changes, especially in the front 9. Brand new multiple concrete teeboxes to include red, white, and blue tees (how patriotic!). The course is long and open and is a great course to really let one rip off the tee.

Cons:

This course is very open with only a few holes that actually challenge you to play through a certain designed course "line". Scores well below par here even for an amatuer are common. ***The park also charges $7 per vehicle in the summer (see below).

Other Thoughts:

Great course especially those with a long drive off the tee. This course is where I fell in love with the game and is still my favorite course to play to date. The park doesn't only offer disc golf but many other outdoor activities. Some of those activities include; ball golf, boat launch, fishing, picnic areas, beach, walking trails, hunting, sledding hill (on hole 4), and more. The park is a great way to get out and enjoy the outdoors.

***The park does charge you to get into the park however, if you go during the non park hours or park around back behind the park and walk a little ways you can play for free. To park around back, the area is at W Oakfield RD and Comission House Rd for those of you who want to "GPS" it.***

Not perfect, not the greatest, but WOW! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 25, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful setting. Great signage. Challenging due to wind and good design. Park personnel are interested and helpful. Great stamp on discs sold at the office. Did I mention wind? Playing along the Niagra River.... Very very cool! Great use of uninspiring terrain, and very well maintained.

Cons:

Single loop...no water on course. Is being addressed, but take plenty of refreshment. Not much shade, but time will change that.

Other Thoughts:

Must play. Wind is constant, can be a great place to learn your discs' wind characteristics. Play it, then go to ride Maid of the Mists...on a hot day, that will really cool you off!

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 23, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great Course. Bring your drivers! This course has cement tee pads, benches at every hole, garbage cans at every hole, and two types of tee pads. Scenic views of Niagara river, and the local birds (including the Blue Herons) make this course a great place to visit. The course is fairly open, and has just enough trees to make this course interesting. The park office sells A TON of discs, and many with there custom stamp!

Cons:

Some might find this course too open. And water can come into play on some holes if you have a bad drive.

Other Thoughts:

Wind is almost always a factor on this course, so be prepared...Also, there is a park fee in the summer time of $7 to enter. You can park outside the park and walk in without having to pay a fee. Just before the park entrance take the service road to the right, directly next to the park entrance...drive about half a mile and on take your first left. You can park on the gravel area near the dumpsters and walk in through the service area of the park. It's that easy!

Pros:

Fun course plenty of elevation change

Detailed signage on every hole

Good mix of open and technical holes. some of the more technical holes have some creative basket placements.

Worth the 6 bucks! bring a few friends and enjoy this beauty!

Cons:

Course par is pretty generous. Coming from Rochester, you'll never see a 400 foot par 5.

Last time i was there hole #7 was missing a basket!

white tees have the pads and the signs blue tees are natural and you have to walk to the white to see how far it is, and then walk back to the blues.

Other Thoughts:

This is one of my favorites in Buffalo! its close enough to a couple others which makes it a great stop if you're going out there for the day.

Good Times Had By All 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Lots of elevation makes for a good mix of holes. Great view too. The pars are generous so its a nice one too help make you feel good about your playing if you just starting out. There are trash bags and signs on every hole which makes it nice and clean all the time and the up keep is well done so the grass never gets too high.

Cons:

If you play after it rains it can get a little wet on the first few holes but once you get to the higher elevations its smooth sailing from there.

Other Thoughts:

Overall great cours the fee to get in i think is well worth this course.

WINDY! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 13, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

- three sets of tees, but only the whites are cement
- nice signs by the white tees
- quality water hazards
- many benches around course
- the park office has a small selection of discs with the Blue Heron course logo (the park is Beaver Island State Park, the course is actually called Blue Heron DGC)
- the first five holes are an elevation dream, but the wind off the Niagara River is pretty intense and will really make you work your discs
- good transitions between holes
- if you play between October & April you won't have to pay the park entry fee

Cons:

- if you play after it rains plan on the course being waterlogged and getting wet feet because there will be puddles everywhere
- a couple long walks between holes (5&6, 8&9), but the paths are pretty worn so it's not too hard to follow
- the red tees are much too simple

Other Thoughts:

This course will train you to play in the wind! It is windy 99% of the time because the course is bordered by the Niagara River.

The wind combined with the water hazards that dominate this course make for a beautiful and challenging round.

There's a little family restaurant on Grand Island Blvd with a lighthouse out front, about 3 miles north of the course, that has awesome food for the cheapest prices you'll find.

Grand Island is a neat little community and it is well worth the $1 bridge toll to get to the Island and course. The course is fun and hardly ever crowded. It's a must if you're in the Buffalo area.

Blue Heron Island Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 22, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Really clean, well maintained park. The course uses the elevation available well, with some downhill shots, a couple sidehill shots, and one that has you going uphill. There are holes of varying lengths, some which you can park your drive with some finesse, and some where you're going to have to rip one into the fairway and set up your second shot. I love the sled hill shot on hole#4, when the wind is blowing you really need to plan your drive so it doesn't end up hundreds of feet away from the basket. Location and park fee really keep the Litterbugs, and vandals away!

Cons:

There is always someone mowing the grass, during the weekdays, and it is busy on the weekends. The parking lot is only close to holes 1, 3, 4, 18 so if you forgot something, or it begins to downpour you could be a long way from the car.

Other Thoughts:

$7 to enter the park which is collected between Memorial day-Labor day. The wind off the river is often stronger than at home inland. Overall a great course with nice scenery and good upkeep

This review is the supplement to others 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 30, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

You should go here. It's in my top 3 favoritest places to be. So clean...pro shop. pretty.

Cons:

Pay to park holds it back, as does the island tolls, and it's a 15 min. drive from most places. But, I suppose that really keeps the people who tear down nice things away, so I don't mind that. So that is a positive then...think of this, not as cons, but as pros #2

Blue Heron Disc Golf Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 24, 2007 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-The course is extremely well maintained, and rather easy to navigate
-each hole has three set of tees: the white tees have cement tee boxes and the red & blue are natural
-each tee has signage which indicates length and a rough map of each hole (although hole #5 was updated and the sign is outdated)
-it's a well balanced course with a good variety of holes. some elevation changes come into play on #'s 1, 3, 4, 12, & 14 some woods on #'s 6, 8, 9, 11, & 18 there are two extreme dogleg right's on #'s 5 &16 and a few holes where water could come into play

Cons:

-there is an overlap of fairways on #'s 15&16
-the course is one large single loop (but if you only want to play 9 holes i've seen people park in front of #5 at the sledding hill and play #'s 6-14)
-this can be a very busy course and a lot amateurs aren't keen on etiquette. large parties won't allow smaller one's to play through, nor will they tell you when an obstructed hole is clear to play

Other Thoughts:

-The park office is next to the first tee, and it's hours very between seasons. At the office you can buy/rent a variety of discs or just pick up scorecards.
-restrooms can be found before hole #1 and after #9
-i think hole #4 would be the signature hole. there's a great view of the river and a 400+ ft downhill drive towards the pin and canada

Worth the trip. 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 29, 2007 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Challenging course with a generous par.
course is pretty open, but not a "see how far you can chuck it" course. With 3 cement tees and great signage this course is one of my favorites.
Course features some elevation changes, water hazards, and well placed foliage. Course flows well and is easy to navigate.

Cons:

small chance of loosing a disc in water hazards, but water is not a major problem. Their are some shots that are pretty close to the road and you have to watch for traffic incase your disc goes off course. Paying to enter the park is a con, but is one worth the travel and entry fee.

Other Thoughts:

Well marked, really nice course. Definately worth a revisit.
we did not have to pay either (we were either too early in the morning or too late in the season)

Buffalo has some stellar courses, all worth the travel, send the family to Niagra Falls, while you treat yourself to a day of great disc golf.

Beautiful Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 4, 2007 Played the course:never

Pros:

Very well maintained, good signage and tees are well marked. Also, "Next Tee" markers on or near baskets are helpful.

Cons:

Not a ton of variety here. Most holes play in the open.

Other Thoughts:

Beaver Island is fun course and definitely one of the better ones in the Buffalo area. The stand out hole for me was #4 which has you throwing down a big hill towards the lake (although there's little danger of actually ending up in the lake). Three or four holes had water that was very much in play and tended to encourage conservative shots due to the proximity to the water and the windy nature of the course.

Beaver Island is only a few miles away from the Canadian border so if you're on your way up there then it's definitely worth a stop. It's a very scenic park with a good disc golf course to boot.
