Pros:
Lovely park, great stuff on offer. Leisure center with cafe, another cafe at the other end. Very picturesque and lots of car parking (although I got ticketed by the leisure center that I'm disputing as the machine wasn't working in the morning - so watch out!)
18 hole Blue course has a great mix of holes, really well thought out and superb use of the space availbale. A couple of really fun and challenging par 4's that ask you to make decisions on the course, some of the par 3's are excellent.
Makes a difference playing on golf fairways with bunkers that come into play on a couple of holes.
I'm a huge fan of the course design and the signature hole number 8 is just lovely. So short so easy, so easy to take a 5 or worse. I loved pinball wizard as well, so many different routes to take, although it could use some branches coming down. 18 again is a different hole, asking you to weave a disc around/through multiple stands of poplars, beautifully made hole.
Tees on some holes are lovely astro, could do with being a bit longer, but laid really well so you can run on without noticing or tripping.
Tee signs are stunning, lovely graphics, really well detailed and distances seem to be bang on.
Cons:
Other park users. Dog walkers especially. I had a favourite putter mangled by a dog - not a good experience!
Dog doo - everywhere, including one of the tees. What's wrong with these people!?
Couple of criticisms with the design - plays alongside a couple of paths on holes 10,11 and 17,18 - leads to a lot of waiting, would be slightly worried about the safety especially on 11 which lands blind.
11 is a lot harder than the other holes. really tough. This is a great hole, but just doesn't seem in context?
Couple of the bunkers are probably a bit too close to the baskets, but the holes are short so I can see why they were placed there - could just lead to some unlucky arbitrary extra shots.
Tee pad on 15? Donwhill hole, but you run uphill, it's a strange one, not sure if this is a criticism or not, as I had to radically change the way I throw to not throw a stalled out hyzer, I'd almost put this in as a pro as you can actually standstill a shot to the basket by using the elevation to your advantage.
Difficult to find hole 12 after 11, wandered around for a while and found 14 and then worked it back from there. I've heard a welcome sign is going in so hopefully that will help.
Edit* Another con I just thought of yet still giving it a 4! Teepads were only in on 5 holes last time I played a couple of months ago and it was wet underfoot. Needs 13 more tees pretty badly.
Edit 2* I meant to put a disclaimer on this - this is a 4 star "UK course" - and the rating is more based on the design, which is very good rather than the overall course and amenities which don't really stack up in comparison to most 4 star US courses. In the states this would probably be a 3/3.5 kind of course (no tee benches, not tee pads throughout, lack of trash cans etc.) for pure fun playing though it definitely gets the 4 star.
Other Thoughts:
All in all a very well designed course and great fun to play. Not a Gold standard course but a good blue standard with some elements of Gold creeping in. Free to play and I would happily play here over and over.
