Tucked in Nicely

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 15, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Bennett features a simple but challenging collection of holes winding up and down several hills, with unexpected turns at many corners. Tees and baskets are freshly installed, and the park in general is in great shape.

Most holes are moderately wooded, and they're all wooded in different ways. There are a few low ceilings (especially hole 6), chances for skip shots, depending on how you throw, several holes that you won't figure out where all the trees are until you've played them several times, and a little elevation change on nearly all of them.

Holes 8 and 9 are a truly excellent way to finish out the course. Hole 8 is a tight par 4 with lots of options for aggressive you can be, and hole 9 is downhill with a bunch of different gaps, and even a chance to go over the top with a grenade or something. Both holes have chances for amazing shots, rollaways if you mess up, and all sorts of fun overall. Hole 8 should have at least one mando left put on one of the trees to keep safety with holes 1 and 2.

What all this means is that even without a ton of distance, this course provides a lot of options and creative plays to try to get a low score. You can stick to the fundamentals and not try anything crazy, but a unique shot might sometimes be the right one, although it may be risky as well.

Cons:

A few holes are not good at all. Hole 1 has nothing going for it, and holes 3 and 7 are just open without a lot to get excited for (those two holes play back-to-back). Hole 3 also puts some backyards in potential danger. These three holes aren't terrible, but for being a third of the course, it's not great.

While there's variety in hole shape, there's not a lot of variety in hole distance. Most holes are around 270 feet, and even hole 8, the only par 4, isn't much longer. The holes themselves aren't bad, and the design of them was good, but I would have appreciated some super technical shorter holes, and then a few longer ones.

While hole 6 has a cool low ceiling, it has other problems. You can play a wide left-to-right shot across the road, completely taking the low ceiling out of the equation. It might be good if the tree was cut a bit to make the hole a little more fair. But it does mean you have to push the disc as high as possible and maybe get a skip up the hill to have a chance at the birdie.

Other Thoughts:

The parking lot by hole 1 is super small, and I hope it gets expanded a bit in the future. But if it's full, there are other parking lots in the park, as well as some residential streets in the area.

There's some opportunity for some additional pin placements, if such a thing was ever a consideration. A long pin on 2, a pin higher or lower on the hill on 8, or just about anything on 9 can be interesting. There's also some opportunity to change up holes by playing to alternate baskets, like playing hole 5 to hole 6's basket, or 9 to 1's basket.

I think this course is quite good, and it complements the wide array of niners already in Liberty. This is a good one to stop at if you like short-ish technical shots and a quick round overall.
