Not the tourney course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 7, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Mild elevation and some trees come into play near baskets. Gurten is a beautiful park with awesome views of Bern and its surroundings. Apparently from tourney map posted here on DGCR, there is a pretty cool and challenging course that is sometimes played here.

Cons:

The more permanent summer course that I played, like much of the other summer fun at Gurten, is probably directed at children. Maybe three holes push 200'. I can't tell from their website if the locals really play here, but the park staff was pretty mystified when I asked about disc golf--even the English-speaking guys. Among all the activities at Gurten, disc golf is clearly not a priority. Over half of the natural tees were missing their toe board, leaving me to guesstimate from the map. I had to double- and triple-take a few times: is this really where they want me to throw from? More than frustrating or disappointing, this disc golf experience was boring.

Other Thoughts:

When I played it, twelve baskets were pulled in preparation for a big concert in Gurten. I still walked the whole course according to the map seeking tees and basket sleeves, throwing whenever possible. Gurten is rightfully on the Bern sightseeing list, regardless of disc golf. To get there you can take the #9 tram from the Bahnhof towards Wabern, getting off at the Gurtenbahn stop. Walk back a few paces to the nearest intersection and turn southwest uphill to the Gurtenbahn station. The street names aren't clear from Google Maps, so print a map, follow signs, or ask someone. See Gurten's webpage (in DGCR links) for Gurtenbahn schedules and fares. Walking all the way up to the park is feasible, but I'm sure you can find better walks around Bern, and the Gurtenbahn is rather cheap.
