Great Florida course, on par with T2 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 10, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Original Course at Bill Frederick Park (or "Turkey Lake" or "T1") is located at the back of the park, right next to T2. I think the ratings for all three courses are about right. I have the Woods Course at 2.5, the T1 at 3.5, and T2 at 4.0. But that has more to do with challenge than anything else. All three are well-designed and very fun. I actually thought T1 was the highest on the Fun Factor scale of the three courses, slightly ahead of T2. It's also at least as pretty as T2. Intermediate players (like me) will find something to like at each course. Advanced players will gravitate to T1 and T2. I think only upper Advanced to Pro players will have anything to quibble about at T1.

+ I'm discovering that this is a personal pet peeve of mine: I hate it when courses label their layouts with color schemes that contradict the PDGA guidelines for Novice, Rec, Intermediate, Advanced, and Pro. Bill Frederick nails it with proper labeling for layouts on all three courses. There is a White (Intermediate) layout on each of the three courses. That's the layout I played. The Woods Course is the easiest of the three, T2 was the hardest, and T1 was in between, each one was appropriately labeled White/Intermediate and fell into the 880-930 rating range for a par round. To me, this is very helpful in comparing courses across the country and finding the best tracks to challenge you.

Here are the layouts for each of the Bill Frederick courses:

> Woods Course: Red/Rec, White/Intermediate

> T1: Original Course: White/Intermediate, Blue/Advanced

> T2: The Turkeynator: Green/Novice, Red/Rec, White/Intermediate, Blue/Advanced, Gold/Pro

+ Of the three tracks, T1 generally stays the closest to Turkey Lake. Wind is a big factor coming in off the lake. The rolling hills, palm and pine trees, and even "Beware of Alligators" signs make the Turkey Lake Course -- at least in my mind -- the realization of ideal Florida disc golf.

+ As mentioned above, I think T1 is the most fun at Bill Frederick (at least at my skill level, even when playing the Intermediate layout on each course).

+ I picked up maps to all three courses at the front gate. They are helpful for navigating the courses. Without maps, there are places you can get lost. But I will say that navigation at T1 is the most intuitive and easiest without a map of the three courses.

+ Good tee pads and signs marking the two layouts, with the layouts pictured and correct yardage listed.

+ Fun and challenging mix of holes and risk/reward factors. The lake comes into play on a few holes. There's also some artificial OB paths to add to the challenge. There are two elevated baskets on hills, making for terrific death putts and fast greens. While T1 is the most open, accuracy is required and there are trees, water, and rough areas to contend with. It's not a hyzer fest. Great course design.

Cons:

I struggle with where to rate and rank Turkey Lake. As mentioned above, it's on par with T2 in terms of the Fun Factor and aesthetics. T2 certainly far outpaces T1 in terms of challenge. I almost rated both courses 4.0, but settled on a 3.5 for the Original Course. If 3.75 were an option, that would be my rating for this course.

- Of the three courses, the grass was by far the longest and most in need of being mowed at T1. I imagine T2, as the headliner course here, comes first in the maintenance pecking order.

- Being a Florida course, there's not much elevation to speak of, although they made a good run at creating some elevation with the few rolling hills they have and a couple elevated baskets.

- Watch out for ants and alligators!

Other Thoughts:

I would have no problems paying $5 just to play one round at Turkey Lake. Lucky for all of us, $5 gets you in to all three courses! If you only have time for a couple rounds here, make sure Turkey Lake, the Original, is one of them.

Great place to play Disc Golf 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 25, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a beautifully designed park for a disc golf course. This entire park contains 3 18 hole dg courses but this review is based solely on the Turkey Lake (T1) course.

The layout of this course is very well done. It utilizes the best features of the land for play and takes you on a nice journey down to the lake and back up into some more wooded and guarded areas.

As I mentioned...playing down near the lake with risk of water coming into play will surely challenge you especially with the windy conditions that often accompany the water holes. But this gives this course that extra character.

Elevation...while not extreme, you will encounter some very nice elevation changes with this course. Right from hole 1 playing downhill through almost a miniature canyon and then the holes leading down to the water and then back up from the water all have some nice elevation changes...always a plus for FL courses which are mostly flat.

While this is a shared park you will not need to worry about hitting anyone as the course design is intended to be away from any areas that you would see other park goers.

The park is very clean and well maintained, there are permanent concrete tee pads and the signage is decent. There is a small pro shop on site when you enter the park that will sell some discs and other items.

Cons:

Not many cons about this course other than the basket type I feel could be better. Currently they are Chainstars which personally I am not a fan of just in terms of visibility.

The course is located in a State Park that does charge to enter. While it's not much it will cost $4 (per car) to enter the park to play.

It can be somewhat confusing the first time you come here to find where you are supposed to park and locate the first tee pad. The disc golf courses are in the back of the park.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this facility is top notch and if you are a disc golfer this place is a must visit if you are visiting the Orlando area. There are 3 18 hole courses here that sure to challenge all skill levels. If it weren't for the terrible I-4 traffic coming from the Daytona area, we would play here much more. But we always enjoy making the trip over for the Turkey Trifecta. But in my opinion, the Turkey Lake (T1) course is the best of the 3.

Enjoyable afternoon 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 13, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Some surprising elevation changes for a Florida course! Not immense hill-climbs by any means, but enough to change your perspective and make things interesting. A beautiful park setting, yet not many other players or campers for a mid-July day. A good variety of holes. Some short, tight lines - the 10th comes to mind - , a few where the basket placement is near water, so overshooting even a little comes at a cost, and a few more that are fairly open, providing of course that you negotiate an obstacle of some sort placed in your line.

Cons:

Only thing missing in my view was a true bomber hole or two. It's not necessary to make a course enjoyable; just a preference for me to want to get a driver out of the bag a couple of times! A bit of a walk between some of the holes, but not enough to be off-putting, as the map handed out by park staff kept me on line. Not a big fan of "blind" tee shots (especially on a first visit to a course, as I have to walk out from the tee and see what I'm aiming at), but only one such issue on the final hole.

Other Thoughts:

I'm a lefty, but can play either FH or BH. I found it interesting, having played both the original and T2 courses on consecutive days, that the original course was much more a RHBH (or forehand for me) track, whereas T2 was a LHBH run. I doubt it was done by design, but it was fun coincidence. The water bottle station was a great idea, but it was so hot (96 degrees) that the water produced was worthy of filling a bath tub!! If you have time, squeeze in a couple of the courses here. It's worth your time!

A Classic 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 15, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

(3.534 Rating) A true classic of a course.
- CHARACTER - Full of extras and disc golf comforting items. I'll start by noting the teeing experience. Two concrete tees at half of the holes and they are of adequate length. The tees also have good hole signage, are mostly shaded, and there are benches and bag hangers at many if not all the tees. A bunch of pre round goodies as well. There's a water bottle station, port-o-potty, course map and two practice baskets, which was only the second time I'd seen that. (First was Taylor Park in Largo FL.) Other niceties included multiple basket locations, shelters with tables and bridges and stairs at appropriate terrain changes. In addition, the design of these stairs and bridges definitely show craftsmanship.
- COURSE MAP - Be sure and request a map when you pay to enter. Although navigation didn't seem to be too tough without one, I'm still glad I had my map, as I referenced it 3 or 4 times. The course map on DGCR is not up to date.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - I happened to be playing Turkey Lake during a prolonged drought in the Orlando area, and even with that, (dying trees and sandy areas and dead grass) the inner beauty still showed through. A nice variety of older trees, (Pines, Oaks, Maples, Palms, Cypress, etc.) Great backdrop views of the lake on several holes. Also, subtle terrain changes on a few holes, which was a nice surprise for the Orlando area.
- SKILL LEVEL FRIENDLY - Although not necessarily a beginners course or an advanced level course, the course somehow manages to provide a prefect middle ground. The odds of losing a disc is low, great for beginners. The fairways are just long enough for some advanced players and there's just enough obstacles to make a skilled player work for it. Pros will however, come away unchallenged.
- FORGIVENESS - The odds of losing a disc due to an errant shot is low with a few notable exceptions. Throwing long on (3) or throwing right on (5). There is also water in play on (13 and 14) but you'd really need to misfire bad to approach it. Other than the water danger, errant throws are usually not further punished, one of the few benefits of a lightly wooded course.
- TWO MORE COURSES ON SITE - Can you really go wrong with 54 holes at one location?

Cons:

A solid course, the items below are mostly to show its weaknesses compared to other top Florida courses.
- UNIQUENESS - The hole variety is indeed above average. However when I compare it to other courses I've rated 3.5 or above, it would fall below average among those courses. There's a few slight changes in elevation, water kind of comes into play on one or two holes, a few holes have a pocket to them and there are a few windows to split. The diversity in shot shaping however is what's lacking the most. Most of the holes are lightly wooded and a couple are completely open. There's no huge sweeping dogleg hole. There's a couple of almost tunnel plays, but they lack the full defining features of such. There no par 5 and the one par 4 in very much on the short side.
- ELEVATION - No more than 20 feet of change on any one hole. If you're from south Florida this may seem hilly compared to other courses in the region, but just about every other part of the country would call the course flat. That said, the course does use the elevation well for what was available.
- NOT T2 - I played all three Bill Frederick courses the same day. It ever so slightly appeared that T2 was getting more maintenance attention. There were a few tees needing minor repair. Some of the stone and woodwork for bridges and stairs will shortly be in need of a complete overhaul. There were a few areas cordoned off for construction as well. Maintenance was still better than your average course and I get it why most of the money is flowing to the other courses.
- OPEN HOURS - The park closes at 7pm April thru October and closes at 5 pm the rest of the year. This makes after work rounds real tough to complete and there'd be no night golf.
- WIND - Of the three courses, this one will suffer the greatest impact from the wind. There are a bunch of unprotected and lightly wooded holes right off the lake. 30 mph gust during my visit.

Other Thoughts:

The Original Turkey Lake course is a classic as advertised. The course however is beginning to show its age and has a bit of a dated feel to it. On its own merits, It's well worth the price of admission, but I probably wouldn't pay $2 often considering the other options in the area. However, when coupled with T2 and the Woods course, $2 is a bargain.

Pros:

More hills than most Florida courses. Not as busy as the free Gordon Barnett park due to the small enterance fee. Restrooms for the ladies by parking area & others along the course route. Long & short cement tees. baskets always in good shape.

Cons:

I dare you to find some. Sometimes other park users in your way but that's not the courses fault.

Other Thoughts:

If playing Orlando on the weekend you can avoid the crouds at the free Gordon Barnett park which is always busy.

Love the concrete pads. Signs at every hole make ID easy for first time at course. Nice layout, mild skill levels, opportunity for aces exist here. Plenty of facilities for rest room. Bag hangers at holes, some rest benches. They sell some discs at front entry office.

Cons:

Just that it rained on us here, but hey, it is central Florida.

Other Thoughts:

Have only been playing since May 2013. I was able to go 4 over par first time on course. Mostly a par-3 course.

Beautiful Course. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 9, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Course is located in a beautiful neighborhood and more importantly inside of Bill Fredrick Park.
- Tee-pads are all perfect size and in really good shape.
- Plenty of shot variation; every shot that you have in your bag will be used on this course.
- Rolling winds and elevation change really add an element to the game not often seen in Florida.
- Beautiful scenery and wildlife; the majority of holes run along the shores of Turkey Lake providing some great photo opportunities.
- Course can be difficult; depending on the wind, this course can be one of the harder courses in Florida in my opinion. With that being said, if you can keep your shots low and putt well it is very easy to score really well.
- Although this is a "longer course" it still has a few Ace Runs; Hole #4, #10 (I have an ace on this hole), and Hole #14.
- Signature hole in my opinion is #17; longer shot that moves up, then down and right to left to a landing zone made of beautiful Florida sand.
- Playing course from the short pads actually makes this a different course than playing from the long.

Cons:

- Tee signs are old and from experience of playing a tournament here, not very accurate with distance.
- Course does not have a very efficient flow from hole to hole; if you are playing it for the first time get a map from the park office or play with a local.
- Lacks signature finishing hole; Hole #18 is a blind shot over a ditch up to a small fairway which leads to a tight shot to a guarded basket. No real shot for birdie, I've only seen one person birdie it and it was an amazing shot.

Other Thoughts:

- This course ranks in the top ten in Florida for me; It has everything a disc golfer could want plus some more.

- This is definitely a course i would take a day trip to play; play T-2 and the Gordon Barnett courses, or just check out the Orlando night life.

The Original is Worth a Play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 10, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Naming the second course at Turkey Lake "T2: the Turkenator" was apt, though that moniker says more about the original course than anything else. Turkey Lake is much like the original Terminator. In relation to the big man on campus, it's low-budget. It lacks the big effects, the blow-your-pants-off moments. And maybe it's just a bit cheesy, and relies a bit on nostalgia. But it's still follows the same story as the big-money sequel. And it's well worth playing.

Like big bro, the course plays through a mix of fields and lighly wooded areas and comes close to its namesake lake on a few hole. There isn't a true water carry, but drives off 5 should hang out over the water for a while if you want to avoid the outcrop of woods. The lake is in view for a number of holes, but with the exception of 4 (where you would have to overshoot by about thirty feet to hit the lake) you are teeing off away from the water.

Still, there are a few really solid holes. 10 is a nice ace run, shooting over a gulley and towards a basket that hides behind a solitary tree, approachable from either right or left. 18 features a similar throw over a gulley, but instead of landing near the pin, a well placed drive leaves you on a narrow fairway leading to a guarded basket.

The signs are old but still in good condition and accurate for the most part, although a few baskets may have been moved. The par lables have faded, although that's just as well since they don't make too much sense. There is a par 3 that is considerably harder and longer than the par 4 which precedes it.

And there's a great flow. The front nine circle in a huge loop that descends to the lake and climbs back to the start. The back nine loops around the other way, into the woods and towards the highway.

Cons:

So what's not to like? Well, there are a few tosses that interact with walkways. (3, 6) There are a few fairways that I've seen being used for other events. (8, 7)

There's not too much length and there's not a ton of difficulty. Too many holes don't require control and many fairways are just too wide.

Other Thoughts:

I play this course about one out of every four visits to the park. It's a good, fun course. It's just not T2.

Gobble, gobble... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 12, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 hole course in the back of a large parge complex. Excellent concrete tee pads with multiple pads at most holes. Good signs offering length and basic hole shape. Navigation signs in the right places to keep you on track. Course and park are also very well maintained. There are bathrooms, plenty of parking and picnic areas/gazebos galore. Nice small lake with docks and other activities abound. Camping on site for campers, tents and even some small rental cottages. Really a very cool park.

Course has hole lengths from 219' to 420'. Most holes are open grass with mature trees shaping the shots that need to be made. Everything is pretty straight forward and nothing is so technical that it feels like a beat down. This course is probably best for beginners and intermediate players. It is not overly challenging, and could even be a good spot to work on different aspects of your game, Plenty of open space to keep those errant shots from being too punitive.

Cons:

A shot or two over or very close to the paved walking path.

Not any super holes, or huge challenges.

No water carries on a course by a lake. I guess for some this could be a positve.

Other Thoughts:

Just a very nice little course. While it doesn't play long or super technical there is just enough cool features to keep it from being too easy or boring. There are basket positions tucked behind or near trees. There is a slightly elevated basket. There is also some tight gaps off the tee and some low ceiling shots to prevent some short, open holes from be simple ace runs for all. Nothing too tough, but little features that make you hit the line.

13 was probably my favorite hole. It is a slightly down hill 290' hole with the lake in the background, and two ways to get to the basket. There is a fairly open RHBH anny line or a tighter RHBH line that would need to fade a tiny bit.

18 is a pretty cool blind shot that makes you throw a sweeping RHBH hyzer line to a well guarded basket. Had to walk the whole fairway to see the basket. I liked the look and feel of the hole, but would love to see the small tree right in front of the basket removed. That would make the basket visible from half way down the fairway, and not force people to throw an over hand shot or some other utility shot to go over the trees. Just my .02 I guess. Just no fairway there. Weird, but it does look cool.

Overall this course is defintely worth your time. It is not going to beat you up, but does offer some fun in a great setting. Plus there is another course right on site for that second round after you are all warmed up.

Great intermediate course complements T2 Turkeynator 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 5, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Challenging design that utilizes what little elevation changes there are in this area
-Good use of trees to create tough drives and protected approaches
-Fast greens are great for optional roller shots
-Great design allows for good introductory/beginner-friendly course that is also fun and challenging for more experienced palyers
-Attractive with large open rolling greens and water backdrops - water rarely comes into play, but is a presence on a few holes
-Great complement to the other, bigger course in this park - T2

Cons:

-Length of holes is pretty monotonous
-Hole length on signs doesn't seem right - holes generally seem longer than the signs say
-18 seems unfairly difficult (especially compared to the rest of the course) - maybe I just need to play it more but I see no possible way to consistently par this hole

Other Thoughts:

I played this course, the original, first and then played T2 - as recommended by another reviewer and I loved it. I brought lots of water and took my time, and never felt tired - the original really is a great warm up for T2 - there is even a nice covered picnic table to take a break and have a mid-round snack.

Great park! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 16, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Scenic park, nice views of lake. Mostly open par 3 course.

Cons:

Tee signs seem to show incorrect distances on a number of holes. Not a lot of distance variety. Very few benches, and a fair amount of hills to climb.

Other Thoughts:

This course is a nice compliment to the T2 course (also in same park). This one is called the 'Original layout' on the course map. Although it has a lower par and seems easier than T2, it is certainly challenging in its own right. It seems as though the original layout has been modified a bit, however, as many of the tee signs seemed to be a little off. This course has more views of Turkey lake, and several holes that play along it. It is much shorter than T2; I played T2 from the shorter Red tees, but played the OL from the longer Blue tees. The back nine is much tougher than the front, and there are some really tight gaps that punish severely if missed. I am sure this course would be much easier the second and third time around. Overall a nice experience. I am glad I played both courses rather than one of them twice. If you are travelling to Orlando, Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake is the place to play!

The Yin of the Bill Frederick Courses 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 13, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Very Scenic and well maintained State Park ($2 per person/$4 per car to enter) Ask for a Map when you pay.

-Course has a rolling terrain, that plays near a very scenic lake *This is relative to where you are coming from. Most of the coastal Florida courses are Flat, so someone from Tampa would call this terrain Rolling. Someone from Tennessee would probably consider this flat.

-Close to Universal Studios, but Disney is a little bit of a drive. (In case you are vacationing)

-Concrete Tee's, Multiple Tee's locations, Bag holders, Tee signs with Maps & Distance.

-Beginner friendly/players of all levels can enjoy

-Is an Old School course, and definitely plays as such. This was a fun course to play!

-The original Turkey Lake Course and the T2 course start back to back.

-Good mix of Left, Right and Dog Leg pin locations.

-9 holes out and back to the parking lot, the back 9 starts right next to hole 1 and also finishes at the start. This allows for a nice stop at the vehicle and the bathrooms.

-Very nice restrooms at the start. Look for the big building on the right as you approach the teeing area through the parking lot.

-The course is mostly open, with some wooded shots. 18 is a rugged narrow dogleg that makes for a great finishing hole.

-The course is pretty much isolated, but it's not immune from Park goers & pedestrian traffic. The back 9 is more isolated than the front 9.

-It's not as challenging as T2, but it still offers a good time and a lot of fun.

FWIW
-There are a ton of activities here! If you have a spouse, friend or family member that is wants to watch your kids, then there are a bunch of activities they could do while you get to play a couple rounds here. From Playgrounds to a Farm, there is plenty to do here.

-Camping and Cabin rentals on site as well.

Cons:

-There is a walking path through the front 9, not terribly in the way, just look before you throw.

-This course plays near some common areas and near a ballfield. Though pedestrians and park goers should be easy to spot, look before you throw. The campground on the back 9 is the same way.

-Some of the holes have been changed, which is not reflected in the maps. This makes navigation a little difficult. The one I remember was that the 4 tee is now down on the bank of the water. (Which is actually makes a very scenic tee)

-Depending on when you get here, allow for a longer commute time. Orlando has very congested roads and it can get brutal! TIP: Have quarters for ready for theToll Roads. They are exact change only and no bills. I learned they do accept pennies! Cleaned out my change cup! ;)

-This may be a factor for some, but the distances and shots may get redundant for some. I think it's great having one course designed for challenge and the other designed for casual fun. Yin of the Bill Frederick Yin Yang

Other Thoughts:

Turkey Lake is definitely the easier of the two courses here. Beginners can play here as well as advanced players. Since there is a campground here, you may see a few Non-players trying their hand at throwing a disc. The walk around the lake alone is very enjoyable; being able to play Disc Golf around the lake is fantastic. The course was immaculate the day I played here! Clean, Sunny, and in the lower 60s! It's not terribly challenging, but it's fun to play and I had a great time. It plays up and down hills, and near plenty of water. (All of the water factors are lateral water hazards)

These two courses are well worth the cost of admission. This course also makes for a great warm up course for T2. I would recommend playing this one first before T2. You'll want your arm loosened up for it. I didn't see any gas stations in the immediate vicinity, but it's Orlando. There are plenty of restaurants within a few miles. Any type of shoes and shorts will be fine here. You may have to fight with some thorny weeds on the fringes of the back 9, but overall you should be fine. Plus, this is the kind of course you could bring someone that may not be a DG player. Perhaps some family and/or friends you are vacationing with.

Pros:

Beautiful course. It reminded me a little of Taylor Park in Largo only without all the water. This is stress-free disc golf. Beautiful landscape with some elevation changes. There is plenty of opportunity to let it rip while still having to have accuracy. I appreciated some next tee, signs (just needed more of them). This is park is really, really well maintained. It is low traffic. You don't have to worry about pedestrians. I also like that it challenges every aspect of your game (especially between both courses...but even just on each of them individually). That brings up the next plus. This is a multi-course site with one fee to get in and play all you like! I liked the combination of open with enough trees to mess with you and then going into some holes (like hole 8) that were more closed off yet with length that made you really throw a laser in order to be low and long enough. Another great feature is that the course does allow you to get back to your car around hole 9-10. Love that they put the $ in to do it right and install multiple tees to give you a variety of options. I hope I can get back to this course sometime. I haven't played Barnett to compare but this course was so much fun!

Cons:

My biggest complaint is that it is not always easy to find the next tee. Sometimes there are signs and other times there aren't. I got really confused after hole 3, trying to find hole 4. They really need a next tee sign unless I missed it. I am not really sure about restroom facilities. T2 did have a sign that said don't pee on the course. Thought that was interesting. Other than that...nothing but positives come to mind!

Other Thoughts:

If you are in the area, come play these two courses! It is well worth it. Bring every shot you have. Come and enjoy challenging disc golf without having to worry about losing half your discs in the water.

Multiple shots. Left/Right, and low/high ceilings. Also putting uphill/downhill a couple of times. I even had to throw a Roller once (first time in a live round). Short holes are not necesarily a "gimme" because they're usually guarded by tight shots.
If you're a Recreational, or Intermediate player, you will enjoy that you can still save par even if you hit a tree off your tee shot.

Cons:

Water. In the summer months, it will be awesome if they had a few more water spots.
I was confused a couple of times between the distance on the score sheet, and the distance posted on the tee pads.

Other Thoughts:

I wish I lived a little closer, the course will force me to become better at throwing "tight" drives.
The uphill/down hill puts don't have a lot of inclination, since this is FL and it is mostly flat, but it's a nice change of pace.
The park overall is pretty nice. My son and I enjoyed the other ammenities available during our visit.

Clean course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 15, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is very clean and friendly. It is in FL so there are tons of little lizards and big birds and sand and swamp things. There isn't a ton of elevation, but the water and trees make up for it. The course map looks easy, but the tree and basket placement is difficult. Bring a variety of discs and arms because the course doesn't favor a right or left fade.

Cons:

I can't think of any. FL is hot and humid in the summer. Duh. Bring water.

Other Thoughts:

The $2 fee isn't really a con, because I have never seen a course with so little trash. I would pay a couple bucks to not have to play around tons of butts and bottles. This is a very well maintained course.
Also not a con, but when it is 90 and 90% humidity at sea level, your drivers fly differently. I didn't, but I would recommend playing the first few holes for practice to see how things fly. The trees actually saved me from being alligator bait twice when my drives wouldn't stop turning. I would add a number to the turn and subtract a number from the fade on your discs.
I played conservatively around the water because I took the warning signs seriously, but there are plenty of birdie opportunities for the confident player.
Update: I played again. 18 can be birdied. Instead of trying to follow the narrow tunnel to the basket, throw far right and really high and go around all of the trees. I was able to land two drives within 30'. Scout it out first though, it is tight.

great variety of shots and distances

well marked holes and nice wide tees

Cons:

not very beginner friendly
flow can be confusing in a few spots and there are some walks

Other Thoughts:

The more challenging of the two courses here. The distance and trek make for a longer round.

Good Course in a Great Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 29, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Bill Frederick Park @ Turkey Lake isn't hard to find. There are signs on the interstate and all over the area pointing you to its location. Once in the park, there is plenty of signage to direct you to the disc golf courses. The park and lake serve as a beautiful setting for disc golf.

The course features a good mix of open areas and wooded holes. While there isn't much elevation, the designers did the best with what they had and it works well. Hole #10 is a great example of the elevation and hardscaping with terraced steps down from the tee into a gulley and then terraced steps up to the basket and sand green. Additonal variety comes into play (and may factor into shot/disc selection) with the different playing surfaces, which included grass, leaves, dirt, wood chips, and sand. Risk and reward shows up on several holes with water coming into play, especially near the basket greens.

The multiple tees at this course are clutch. They allow a different playing experience for all skill levels and offer the opportunity to play this course several different ways.

The hand painted tee signs at Bill Frederick Park are a nice touch. Additionally directional arrows, signs, and other navigational aids are very helpful. The garbage cans positioned throughout the course help to minimize litter. Most of the baskets and tees are in great shape. Another conveinence at this park is the restroom, located next to the parking area near holes #1 and #10.

Cons:

In a few cases, the baskets for one tee played a bit too close for comfort to other tees.

Specific to the course design and layout, several blind holes required some inspection before teeing off. There seem to be an excess of "point & shoot" straight fairways without much in the way of doglegs. The lengths of many of the fairways were on the shorter end of the spectrum.

There were a couple of instances where the navigation getting to the next tee is a little dicey. In additon, a few of the tee signs were misleading or confusing. This is especially the case for the hole that is missing its tee sign.

Other Thoughts:

I wouldn't classify this as a diffuclt course, but it is certainly enjoyable and presents players with serveral birdie opportunities and ace runs. It is probably a great primer for T2-The Turkeynator.

The limited hours of operation make it a bit less convenient than other courses, but the 9-11 hour window should give plenty of time to play more than a round or two.

I was really impressed with the socially/DG responsible signage throughout the course that promotoed responsile golfing (such as safety, garbage disposal, not urinating in the park, etc.) and demonstrated a "help us help you" type of message. If more courses had signs like this (and if more DGers followed this mantra), our sport might have a better reputation.

All things considered, this course sits between a 3.25 and a 3.5. But considering the dynamic nature of the multiple tees, the beautiful park, and how friendly the staff is, I have no problem rounding this up to a 3.5. I would recommend this course to anyone in the Orlando area and it's well worth the miniscule amount of money to play.

Par 3 Fun in a Lakeside Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 23, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Turkey Lake is a course with fun disc golf shots in a mostly open lakeside setting. It's good for a round at a leisurely pace but is still very engaging with interesting and challenging tee shots. You want to keep playing it again and again as it's tough but possible to birdie each hole. Often it wasn't obvious what to throw off the tee, leading to a disc selection process that makes disc golf more fun. I played it while on vacation with a partial bag, but the diversity of shots made me wish I had my full bag.

I really enjoyed the holes by the lake and the challenge added by the wind. Disc golf courses where just about every tee shot is an opportunity to launch a disc and attack the pin can be a lot of fun, and that applies to Turkey Lake where any birdie feels rewarding. A couple of the holes are memorable, particularly the stretch from 4-7.

This Pennsylvania native was amused and pleased by the Florida trees and wildlife that populated the course and how they affected course design.

Cons:

It's basically just a Par 3 course, so it misses out on the fun of Par 4s and Par 5s. While the holes near the lake are very beautiful, a stretch of a couple holes on the Back 9 has a feel that is diminished by the adjacent highway.

Tees and baskets and signs are showing their age, although it definitely doesn't look like it's 25 years old...maybe 10-15 years old.

While it didn't matter to me for my one round, having multiple pin positions per hole that regularly rotate is a relatively easy improvement that could make Turkey Lake much more addicting...at least that's been my experience on other similar courses.

Other Thoughts:

I played by myself without having seen the course before, and navigation was easy. Coupled with T2, the park is definitely worth visiting if you're in Orlando.

Pros:

This is a beautiful park with 2 courses, tons of other amenities, and camping on site! This course was mostly open but still challenging.

Other Pros:
- 2 tee positions
- easy to navigate with "next T" signs in confusing spots
- risk/ reward including a few water hazards (water is clean and clear but there was a sign warning of gators!)
- two 9 hole loops bring you past the restrooms
- variety of turns
- decent tee pads
- mixed terrain and some elevation

Cons:

I think the tee signs must have been moved from the front of the tee to the back, ewhich of course is better but the map gets confusing for 1st timers because it looks like you're supposed to throw the opposite way.

Pay to play is a con but, 2$ a person or 4$ a car is worth the fee, especially for 2 courses!

Other Cons:
- rough areas can rip your skin, retrieve slow and easy.
- a rowing team was setting up and interrupted our play on 3 holes
- very windy from the lake
- highway noise for a few holes

Other Thoughts:

My favorite hole was 18, a shot over a small cliff into an area with many wild palms.
I had a great time and really enjoyed the scenery. If you have a family with you then they will have tons to do while you have your fun. Here's the phone number from the park map I received in case you have any questions: 407-246-4486
