Pros:
-Black Mountain YMCA DGC is located on a fantastic piece of property. There are creeks, a pond, and pretty trails through the woods.
-There are a lot of short to midrange shots here with a few holes in the 100s, most holes in the 250 range, and a few 300-350 holes. Some accurately placed shots will leave you feeling pretty good about yourself.
-The holes at Black Mountain, while short, are well-designed. There's a good variety of terrain, with open, wooded, a bit of elevation, and water in play on several holes.
-New DISCatchers on every hole in the seldom-seen blue color.
-This course has a very quiet and relaxed feel to it when no campers are present.
Cons:
-Transitions here between holes are very tricky and there are long distances between holes at times. You should definitely download the map under the links/files tab.
-There's a decent amount of ups and downs transitioning between holes, but not a ton of elevated shots on the holes themselves.
Other Thoughts:
There really is space here for a top-notch course, but unfortunately you are left with a typical, 18-hole course. It's a fun play, but leaves you wanting more. It is, however, well-suited to the camp's purpose of beginner-friendly.
While here I spoke with a couple of employees and they said the course is unplayable April-October as they have 100s of kids on site each week and stay booked. This course is currently still private as you MUST be a guest of the resort, however, they are talking about having a check-in system instituted during the off season giving the general public the opportunity to play.
