Desert Play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 21, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The baskets are in great size. There is a sign marking the start of the course. It's layout is great. Hole 1 had two Tee pads, that made the hole longer. There's room to made two tee box for each hole ( Red and Blue). Flags marked the start of hole and the baskets have flags on top. The Tee pads are marked with flags and painted rocks.

Cons:

The Tee pads are marked with flags and painted rocks, sometimes. The Tee pads are dirt, but there are sticks and other stuff that's need to be remove before throwing your disc. Tripping hazard. On my third time playing the course, someone move the Tee box on Hole 17. Hole 17 is missing the flag and the move was for the better. More challenging shot.

Other Thoughts:

There a lot of trash on the course. Bring your own water. Some of the holes are Par 4's, not 3's.If you are going to play the course, print off the map. It will help somewhat. It will never be a top course, but whit some improvements it can be better. It took me three times playing the course to get the layout down. I play twice in the early morning and once in the evening. It was hot. I HIGHLY ENCOURGE YOU TO USE A MAP.

New, but Military New. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 20, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

There are few places on earth where you can play disc golf and see Apache helos and A-10 fighters flying overhead.
There are 18 holes here - not nine played in an out and back.
This old golf course was decommissioned and instead of becoming open space, someone chose to get 2 grand from the government to add pins and "tees". Tees are all dirt/mud (common in the SW for unfinished courses) but are well defined with an orange flag at both tee and pin. It seems like the course is still in an evaluation stage, but it is still a lot of fun.
The back nine (minus 1) are loads of fun. There are some tunnel shots, big arms, obstacle shots, and the elusive "perfectly flat circle" shot that somehow gets a double bogey (but wind is a con).
The front nine consist of several fairly basic shots working with the bolf course remnants - using guardian trees (2,5,8) and doing the best with the situation at hand. Kudos. I thought I was enjoying myself -- then came the back nine.
The southwest (as locals know) is windy. The front nine are a little sheltered and/or feel like similar lines. The back nine are far more fun. My new partner and I went in the later afternoon and the wind game alone between holes made this good. When steady, the headwind on 13 is a cross tail on 14 and a full tail on 15 - and don't forget, the southwest loves gusty conditions. So your disc choices matter a lot!
Overall, if I were in town again, I'd look at the nearby courses (many similar ratings) but several courses only have 9 pins and if you have a military ID or someone to escort you, this is a beautifully serene setting and some cool military flying as well.

Cons:

Signs are absent. The map is 90% enough to help you find the next pin, but we had trouble at 8 and 13's flag was against a tree. If you don't want to look at a map, you'll need to look at a map. However, the map helps and other than the above I was able to figure it out without concrete tees, tee signs, or the perks.
The tees are marked with painted rocks (I think 17 was moved) which could sometimes be hard to find. Above, orange flags were a big help except where there was minimal maintenance.
No bathrooms if Outdoor Rec is closed.
Since the inception, someone moved the flag and front markers for 17 ahead of the trees, making it a 175' hole with no obstacles except the (horrific) wind. It was probably better behind the opener trees at 215'.
Someone allowed several campers to be stored between the tee at 18 and the pin. You can still see it, but the campers at 50' is an obnoxious obstacle. Hole 18 is awesome, up on a twice raised terrace, but the storage spoils the exit. A good designer set this up, but "requirements" spoilt a good part of it.

Other Thoughts:

This is a newer course awaiting feedback and some help installing the wonderful amenities of mature courses - next tee signs, tee signs, etc. My guess is that the decommissioning of the golf course freed some budget money and $2k for flags, baskets, and a poster was procured. Kudos to the NCO or contractor that made this happen - a year without watering, and this is not a golf course. Glad we're able to create something from it!
Amenities: Possibly bathrooms, but closed when we visited. No benches.
Overall: A disc golfer set this place up, but the upkeep was left to folks without experience of what is needed for 1) fun, and 2) navigability. With a little expertise, this course could revitalize the front nine and knock the back nine out of the park -- without it, this is a fun place to play if you're in town with military friends, but you may want to look at the other courses outside the area to meet your 3.5star+ needs.
It is possible the golfer is still here - if so, contact me!
Otherwise, this place is a great amateur course, but needs the panache to get it to the next level. I'm not local, so this could be in the works, but I do not know. I wish the Tucson DG scene luck!

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 14, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

green for a desert course
spacious
low crowds

Cons:

overgrown and unkept
tees are hidden for some holes

Other Thoughts:

since this is on an old golf course, the flow is pretty good. but since it's not kept, and I went during the later winter, i had to hike from hole to hole with the tall weeds and grass. but since no one is around since it's on a military base, it's fairly quiet.
