Ace run on every hole, but never will be tough 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 14, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good course that is well maintained, but does show some age.
1. This is the first permanent course in Columbus. The plant growth has changed a few holes, but it still pretty much plays the same as it did 30 years ago.
2. Every hole offers an ace run and many easy 2s.
3. #5 and #18 are blind tee shots and pretty fun.
4. Good warm up or rehab course.
5. If you want to use course pars, all holes over 200 feet are par 4, so eagles are common. The pars actually made more sense back in the 1980s.
6. The course is well maintained and restrooms are nearby.

Cons:

1. No holes over 300 feet.
2. Elevation doesn't really come into play.
3. The ace runs at some holes (#7, #9, #13) are just too easy.
4. #6 is no longer a tight 280 foot hole. The age of the course has hurt this hole.
5. No hole is worthy to ever accept a 4.
6. Usually crowded with average players.

Other Thoughts:

Fun little course, but not worth a road trip to Columbus. This is the course for beginners to start working on Ace runs. It will never progress your game to the next level.
I use this course for rehab after injury. Short enough if you don't like your round, you can play another quick round. If you have any arm at all, you will only want to play this course occasionally.

It’s Like Disc Golf Putt Putt! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 24, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Blendon Woods is one of the oldest courses in the state at a whopping 33 years old! Back in 85' this was probably one of the toughest courses anywhere because the disc technology isn't even close to what it is today. When you're playing, it's fun to think of the guys back in the 80s that we're throwing frisbees that went the distance of Wham-O Discs. Now, in 2018, the former difficult course is now a putt putt course for Columbus area disc golfers.

+ Blendon is a perfect place to hang out and throw with friends, no matter what their skill level is. It's really popular with the locals, as the parking lot was full on a soggy Tuesday evening. Really cool to see groups go out and just have a good time.

+ While all holes are under 300' and in the woods, there's decent variety to keep things interesting. Every hole has an intrigue of hitting an ace, but being over excited could put you in a tough spot to save par.

+ Great signage and concrete tee pads. The area is dedicated to disc golf and has a practice basket next to the first tee.

+ These heavily wooded courses can be a pain to keep up with, especially in the summer months. It's maintained phenomenally and looks great!

+ Navigation is probably the easiest I've seen in a while, even for a first timer with no knowledge of the course.

Cons:

- Every Hole is under 300' so don't come here for a challenge. Like I said earlier, it's like a mini golf course where you go out with 2 Discs and just toss with friends.

- It was packed when I played, and the weather wasn't all that great. You'll end up having to wait for at least one group if you go out in the evening. I played solo so I had to play by 3 groups.

- Pars on the tee signs are very generous, I think most people play every hole as a par 3.

Other Thoughts:

Blendon is just a fun place to throw. Get a couple friends and go on an ace run adventure through the woods!

Blendon Woods Fall 2017 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 27, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Beautiful park park. Well marked. Easy. Fun. Free. Though this park is well past it's heyday as Columbus' best pay-to-play course, it is still a pleasant walk in the woods. The park speed limit is now 25 mph ( up from 10 ).

Cons:

Short, duh. Crowded. Not as well kept as it was in the pay days.

Other Thoughts:

I've been playing here for 35 yrs. now, I still like it. The weather has taken it's toll -- the course is not as dense as it used to be. Now that it's free, it can be crowded with newbies. Some ass-hat stole all the signs last year (boo), but they have been replaced (yea). Still the best wooded park in Cbus

Blendon Woods- you may have heard this before... 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 22, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-concrete tee pads, great signage, very easy to navigate
-nice beginner-intermediate level course
-many ace run opportunities
-provides great midrange & putting practice
-located in a clean, convenient metro park close to downtown Columbus
-good use of the available land to carve out an 18 hole course

Cons:

-WAY too short; longest hole is @ 250 feet
-asphalt pads around baskets less than ideal

Other Thoughts:

Many previous reviewers have identified this course's shortcomings (pun intended), primarily the cons I've mentioned above. Was in town and pressed for time, and I must admit I had a quick, enjoyable round here. Shot my all-time low score (41) for 18 holes, but the accomplishment was tarnished by the lack of challenge. That said, this seems like a great place to bring kids & novice players to learn- and it is always fun to work on your short game!

A good course for beginners 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 20, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good long concrete tees, full 18 hole course, fairways are kept clean and well maintained, the holes are on concrete circles, the course is fantastic for beginners and the course is easy to navigate through.

Cons:

some holes have really steep hills on the rough making it easy to lose your disc like i did last time, if your an intermediate player the course may seem to easy, or too short (for example one hole is around 250 ft and its a par 4) there are thorn bushes everywhere in the rough that made it a little difficult to get my disc out of without cutting my hand, and the course cost $1.50 to play through it once, or $4.50 to play as many times as you want, the chains on some of the holes seemed a little rusted, and not too much variety in the holes.

Other Thoughts:

Over all the course isn't bad, it's just really short, so it's perfect for beginners who want to learn the game. For intermediate to pro players however I'd steer toward other courses. But for what the course is its not terrible. Take that however you want.

Nearly Riskless Traditional 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 27, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Blendon Woods is a really nice park on the northeast side of Columbus, Ohio, about 2-3 miles south of the Brent Hambrink course at Hoover Reservoir. The park has lots of family outdoor activities and a bunch of really nice hiking trails. The disc golf course is obviously a 1980's style course with holes ranging from 146 to 285 feet in length, with most of them being ace run/ birdie bash opportunities for all Intermediate level players and above. What that means is that the course is well established, popular with casual to Recreational level players, and you really won't need a map to find the next tee, as thousands have beat in the paths for you.

There are nice, new(er) DGA baskets out there (including multiple practice baskets near the kiosk at the start, which also has a course map), which catch your shots extremely well. The nice concrete tees are definitely good for the shortness of the course, and there is some really nice landscaping raising the 16th tee. There are plenty of benches and trash cans, and it seems to be fairly well tidied up for such a popular course. The fairways are situated apart from other park activities, so you won't see many non-players near your throws.

The shots feel as if they tend to favor left to right turns, and even when you can't see the basket immediately from the tee, you'll only have to walk a short distance ahead to pick them out. The main thing about this course is that it is extremely forgiving. It may once have been tighter, but I felt as if every fairway was now pretty easy to manage. The greens pose no serious risk of a bad shot at an ace or a deuce winding up giving you a four. In all, this is an enjoyable little course to work on your short game. Memorable holes were probably 5 (a short, tight hook anny - rhbh) just past a marshy bottom rough, that I almost aced, and maybe 18, which plays slightly uphill, and requires a decently controlled fade to the pin position just out of view on the left.

Cons:

The 80's had a lot of asphalt 'greens' at the basket, and Blendon still has these, offering you skip-aways, plus wear and tear on baseline plastic. But they have upgraded the tees to concrete (a while back). There are a number of places where the next tee is in line with, and only 40-50' past the previous basket. Wild casual chuckers could wind up in parallel fairways, as the course design favors 'out, back, out' sets of three holes at a time. The fairways on holes 16 & 17 seemed as if they might be prone to holding water and might be muddy days after rain. And there were a lot of times where I came to a new hole, and thought, "oh, this one's just like that last one, and the one two before..."

Other Thoughts:

There is an honor box at the course entrance asking players to drop in $1.50 per play, or $4.50 all day, to help with the cost of maintenance. Some would put this in the "con's" section, but I thought it was a fair amount for an out of towner checking out the course. The park might want to work with the Columbus club to sell locals a cool bag tag or key chain fob for each season?

Ye Olde Blendon 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 12, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Located in a nice park with beautiful green foliage
-A great course to introduce people to disc golf
-Nice putting area with a discatcher and two other baskets
-Will challenge you with many different throws
-Great for an ace race and mid range accuracy
-Would be great for night discing
-Just a beautiful park and course that makes use of many differing factors such as the shots and the topography
-Drink machine and lounging areas
-Well maintained
-Has nice tees and signs, trash cans, benches
-Can play quickly and then head over the Hoover for the bigger action.
-WATER!

Cons:

-The biggest con for me, personally, is that they strictly don't allow dogs, and they even have two signs telling you that as you walk in! I play with my dog 99.9% of the time and she has become the most important member of our crew, so denying her entrance is enough to turn me away almost for good. This isn't out of spite; my dog discs with us all the time and beyond her just being awesome, we need her there with us. That said...
-The course gets very crowded and it tends to attract the proverbial "chucker."
-This course is more for beginners and subsequently has short holes
-You will probably find yourself bored and wanting to play Hoover and explore other courses if you are trying to advance your game.
-Blendon lost trees I hear from the ash borer, so it is disappointing to see her not as glorious as she used to be, but she is still a beaut.
-It is a short course so you won't need drivers and there are no holes to really air it out on other than maybe 17, and even then you don't have too much room for error.
-It still smells by the watery parts! haha
-Don't go 15 MPH driving up to the place or you are subject to hear about it from the rangers ;)
-The course used to have a disc hut where you would pay but now they just have a donation box that is basically still requiring you to pay (or be subject to moral scrutiny!), but without them making any effort to take your money. I understand they need to maintain it, but the whole box thing strikes me as odd. Plus, you can't buy their sweet wares anymore.

Other Thoughts:

Blendon Woods is a beautiful little park there and it is not far off the beaten path. Hoover is close by, and Sunbury not far either.

I don't really have much to say against Blendon (I know I typed a lot in the cons!). It gets crowded and often the people can be less than courteous.
She isn't as green and dense as she used to be, but the course is still quite nice to walk through and play.

I used to play here all the time when starting disc golf until I outgrew it and wanted to throw Hoover all the time. It is nice to go back and play Blendon, especially as a warm up to Hoover, but with their disallowance of dogs, I just can't see myself ever playing here really.

Steady on Ed, steady on! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

A basic "Steady Ed" course. Short, fairly tightly wooded shots. Precision rather than raw power will be rewarded here.

Solid place to work on putting, with 3 practice baskets available.

Shelter house and open field make for a nice "driving range" to warm up.

Cons:

This seems to be the "beginners course" in Columbus, and etiquette can be lacking, despite plenty of instructional signs at the first tee.

People don't pay the honor box, and maintenance is somewhat lacking consequently. Currently there are no major problems, but I can see where there will be eventually.

Absurd course pars. This course claims to be a par 63, but the longest hole is 284'! I shot a 42 with nothing but a pair of Wizards. There isn't a single par 4 on this course.

Only one set of tees and pin positions. To add more would require a major redesign and if people won't pay, this won't happen.

Other Thoughts:

Blendon is a fun course to play at off-peak times. However, on a nice weekend or evening go elsewhere. This course is clearly an older design, and evoked many nostalgic memories when I was playing it. I hope they hire someone to man the booth, so that there can be some money to put into the course. There's a decent amount of brush to clear, and there is enough unused land to add another 9 short holes, or to lengthen and redesign the existing 18.

Good for beginners, ace run and mid range practice 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 12, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Practice putting area
- Benches and trash cans for your convenience
- Good for the short game and for beginners
- Is close to Hoover so you can warm up here and then play a bigger course
- Drink machine on site
-Water fountain on site
-Picnic tables
-Concrete tees
-Nice signage
-Works most every shot angle you'll need in a round and is great for accuracy

Cons:

- No one works there anymore and there is an honor box of a suggested $1.50 for upkeep of the course. This also eliminates the small disc shop that was once there.
- The shortness of the course can get repetitive if you want more challenging play
- Lost many trees due to the ash borer so it is not as woodsy as it used to be.
-No dogs allowed :(
-There is asphalt under every pin so missed putts can chew up your putter

Other Thoughts:

Blendon is a decent little course that is good for mid range work and also for introducing people to disc golf. The course offers a few different shot opportunities mostly in right and left doglegs but many of the holes are just short, straight shots through open space. Some trees come into play but for the most part it is not particularly challenging for an experienced player. Blendon is maintained well but hasn't changed at all since I've been playing. Overall, it's fun to play once in a while, but you'd probably want to go across the street to Hoover after a few goes.

Great Beginner Coure 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice, long tee pads and open fairways. The layout was VERY easy to follow. And even though it is pay-to-play, a buck-fifty is a bargain, and at 4.50 all day, can't rally be beat.

The layout, though super short, is fun and pin-placement is solid. I didn't see any holes I'd consider 'dumb'.

This is a great beginner course with the short, relatively wide fairways. It's an easy course for beginners to master.

Cons:

If you play much better than a good rec player, you'll get bored quickly. Plus the course with very busy and plays slow with young, beginning player

Other Thoughts:

I think I through my putter 95% of the time and only brought out a beat up Roc on a couple of shots. If you're looking to work on your long game, it's not here. Bring a putter and practice your upshots.

Had a great time 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 26, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is always fun.
Yeah, the holes are all pretty short, but they are interesting and give you a good time working at your mid range game.
Plenty of doglegs, shots through the trees, elevation changes, etc.
If you are an experienced player, it affords the opportunity to shoot for some aces or work on technique.
The woods are really nice, and the water fountain at hole 9 or 10 is a welcome amenity.
I've taken my wife to play here a bunch, and she a;ways gets a great confidence boost from hitting many pars and near birds.
As such, this is a fabulous course for someone you're introducing to disc golf, but will still challenge you, too.

Cons:

When busy, it can bet backed up quick. Hang out at the practice basket and wait for it to clear out a bit and you're usually good. It tends to move along well, though, so not something that should make you avoid the area.

Other Thoughts:

Only a couple of miles from the Hambick course, so its a no brainer to hit this one up as a warm up round once in awhile! In a lot of ways, I find this course more fun and interesting than Hambick anyway. Don't forget! Its pay to play... $1.50 a round or $5 all day.

Cons:

You have to pay 1.50 for a round 4.50 to play all day. This course can be the most crowded in Ohio due to it's small size most of there par 4s are now really par 3s so be aware. This course is really jam packed on the weekends. This is a short course so if your an advanced or pro player you might find yourself a little bored.

My Retreat Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 21, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

+ Extremely well maintained
+ 3 practice baskets, one with markings for an around the world style game.
+ All technical holes that work your accuracy and control
+ Short fairways are beginner and small arm friendly
+ Generous pars will stroke your ego
+ Able to play 18 in a short amount of time
+ Pro Shop to buy and rent discs
+ Vending machine at entrance for sports drinks and water.

Cons:

- Concrete "greens"
- No dogs allowed
- Pro Shop is small
- On weekends large groups new to the game can clog the course.
- The course is compact and thus you really should keep your eyes up for discs heading your way from an errant throw on another tee.

Other Thoughts:

If you're in the area and want to work on your short game and putting this course is 100% worth the money to play. $1.50 for a round and $4.50 for all day is fair for the upkeep on the course.

This course is also great for introducing people to the game. Short enough they won't get worn out and pars generous enough they shouldn't get discouraged.

All holes are so in reach to anybody more than new to the game, you really only need a putter and a favorite midrange.

A good retreat for when Brent Hambrick Memorial DGC is overcrowded and you need a peaceful round. Although it can be crowded too if its the weekend.

I really like this course, even though it is very short. It is tight, and very well manicured, very technical. Experienced players will score well, but its nice to have a course that shorter throwing players can compete.

Cons:

Some will consider it too short, very advanced players may be bored by this course.
