A Vigorous Hike with a View

Other Thoughts:

9 hole layout down, up and across ski trails. Slopeside is the short loop that starts and finishes at the mid-mountain lodge. Concrete tees and DisCatcher baskets. No signage, although there are a few "next tee" arrows and the loop is pretty intuitive.

The layout includes a balance of three downhill holes, three uphill holes and three relatively flat holes. It's always fun to throw big air shots and watch them sail, but the downhills are way too short - best played with mids or putters in order to birdie. Most of the holes use the wide ski trails, so there isn't much other than elevation change to have to consider.

Hole #9 is a generous par 4 that's slightly downhill and only 312', but it's a dogleg that requires about 275' before a hard turn left. A good finisher, and one of the only holes that felt like it could be on a course somewhere other than on a ski hill.

Playing in early July, the Slopeside area was in good shape, and the grasses were cut. This might be because the area is used for other summer activities, like paintball and Spartan/Tough Mudder events.

Sticking in baskets for the summer is an interesting use for a ski property. The Slopeside layout made for a quick round and a vigorous 45 minute hike, but not very memorable play.

RECOMMENDED COMBINATIONS:

It appears from the resort's website that the Skyline Course is still in operation (there's no mention of the other 18 that was as the base) so it's possible to play 27 holes, although you have to park in different lots to access the two courses. Skyline requires a lift ticket, and the layout runs from the top to the bottom. I was wary and didn't play Skyline because in my experience with other ski area courses, the trails are way too overgrown by midsummer, and you spend a lot of time searching for your disc. You'd probably do much better to play nearby Moore Township, or to head up north to Hickory Run State Park
