A good “starter” course drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 10, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

++ Beginner-friendly
+ Great location in a suburban multi-use township park.
+ Nice use of the available space.
+ Short time commitment with 9 holes spaced fairly close together

Cons:

- Not well-maintained, or perhaps I played just prior to planned course maintenance
- Lots if trees make for narrow fairways
- After rain it is very boggy and has many insects
- Hole 7 tees off right near a bog. I was concerned we would have to go fishing for a disc but fortunately all of our party played it safe.

Other Thoughts:

If you are even a slightly experienced player you can give this one a pass unless you are bringing a new player. Twice now I have brought beginners to this course. It is a nice tutorial course because there is limited walking and a low level of commitment requires to play here. I played the entire course with just a putter.

This course has the potential to be better if it were more lovingly maintained.

Fun with Friends

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 21, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nine hole layout through thick pines and next to soccer fields has been updated since my original visit a year ago, but they're a bit limited by what they have to work with.

+ A short, mostly flat nine with some wooded and some open holes that was originally meant to introduce new players (it even included a box of loaner discs at the first tee). A 2023 redesign has added length and some difficulty

+ Most holes run through a thick grove of tall old pines. Holes are laid out to maximize the use of the trees to create alleys, doglegs and obstacles to guard the baskets. In most cases the basket is visible from the tee - but there are a lot of trees to navigate.

+ There's a wooded ridge running through the center of the course, dividing the deep pine side from the soccer field side. Designers have used the ridge for a few basket placements, creating a little bit of elevation change. Hole 7 has added a longer tee, and has two basket placements: one relatively level, and a back one up on the ridge

Cons:

- Any significant rain will make this flat and shaded course into a mudfest lasting for days. Hole 7 plays across a bog, so if its been wet, don't even try

- Tees are natural, marked with a standing numbered plastic post, and a white plastic strip delineating the front of the tee. There are no navigation aids, and a few of the next tees are hard to find. uDisc helps keep you from walking off in the wrong direction

- Hole 9 is an unfortunate closer. Only 185' with an extreme right dogleg. If you go up and over the tree cover directly at the basket, you might have to make only 100' to make C1

Other Thoughts:

~ It's pretty short and meant to welcome newcomers, but the gaps are very narrow and the space between the tall pine trunks is very tight. Offline throws will bounce around and easily end in a blocked shot. Beginners might get very frustrated by the experience (or, they might find multi-kicking ricochets exciting)

~ A lot of local love has gone into this (even rechristening to "Boggy Pines" instead of just "Mondauk Commons"). It's clever, but even though most holes are short, it's probably too narrow and tight for new players. The changes to the original design lean toward intermediate players who like technical challenges. Baggers should stop by on their way to nearby Fort Washington, but other than that, it's probably just a fun local spot for guys to stop by and throw with friends
