Wish it was close enough to call my home course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 18, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Great variety of hole types and layouts
-Two tee options, two basket options
-Located in a beautiful state park
-Really strong disc golf community
-Relatively close to Boston
-Each hole seems thoughtfully designed
-Enough trash cans and recycling
-Dog-friendly but also clean
-Many different creative lines that play to different players' strengths

Cons:

-No water holes
-Gets crowded
-Not a lot of elevation change

Other Thoughts:

Borderlands is awesome. Objectively speaking, Maple Hill is probably the best course <50 miles from Boston, but I love playing these two equally. The course is designed really thoughtfully, with many different options and unique lines to the basket. For example, my forehand drive gets an extra 50 feet of distance at the moment, and I have a friend who's the opposite, but there are many holes here where he will choose to throw forehand and I will choose backhand because we read the hole differently. I've played here more than anywhere else, and while it is a little too far for me (I live in Somerville, MA) to call it my home course, it's definitely near and dear to my heart.

The only two 'meh' holes are IMO 8 and 15 (white baskets) and the blue basket on 2 is kind of insanely long. White to white is fun, basically a par 3 course. B-W and W-B are both challenging and varied. B-B gets pretty difficult and you have to be in the mood for it. It can be confusing and slightly dangerous if there are a lot of people playing different layouts, as you might not realize it until there are others directly in your path. Being vigilant should take care of most of that, however.

I have the most fun here! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 23, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Borderland State park disc golf offers the best disc golf in eastern Massachusetts. The variety from hole to hole is fantastic, featuring different terrains, open fairways and dense fairways, guarding trees and a constant need for creative shot shaping.

The Blue course and the white course offer multiple layouts so regulars can mix up the routine.
Layout allows for easy access to main parking lot from hole 1 and 18.

Cons:

Not too many cons here, it is hard to play 9 holes since, the 9th hole is a long way from the parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

The bottom line is, this place is fun. With so much variety and so much challenge on the course, it draws out the creativity in each player. The parking is a bit Costly parking ($5). Park gates don't open until 7am. Not super easy to find the next tee. Plenty of poison ivy in the late spring and summer, so keep your eyes open, 'leaves of three leave them be.'

Amazing course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 1, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Multiple tee pads for all levels
- There are so many ways too play the course ( White-White;Blue-Blue;White-Blue;Blue-White-Alternate Blue/White...etc)
- Fairways are well defined and there are multiple routes on most holes.
- Easy hiking compared to most 18 hole courses I have played (very little up and down hiking)
- Blue-Blue will allow you to use multiple drivers/fairways/putters in a single round.
- The course has risk reward shots all over.
- I have played many courses and always will go to borderland for a round.
- Good disc golf community that will return discs and help if in need.
- If get out early in the morning you can have the course to yourself. (grass holes can be wet)

Cons:

- It is a heavily wooded course, there are some shots that look great that will be knocked down.
- Your discs will take some damage.
- Can get packed late in the day or weekends.
- Not great elevation holes, it is fun seeing a disc fly for 15-30 seconds down hill.

Other Thoughts:

If you are anywhere south of Boston I would make this course your home course. It is the best in the area. Dacy is a good little course but I would rank borderland head and shoulders above.

Great Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 19, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Borderland is a great course on a great park. It has two sets of tees (white and blue) and two sets of baskets (white and blue). They share parts of fairways but offer different lines from tees to baskets (both lefty and righty friendly). The tees and baskets can be mixed and matched (i.e. white to blue, blue to white, etc.) which provides lots of options and varied levels of difficulty. All of the tee pads are rubber mats and complete with a sign showing the fairways and distances to the white and blue baskets. The baskets are great shape as well. There is a variety of wooded and open fairways. There are some elevation changes and tight fairways that make things interesting. There is also a lost and found box to drops discs that are found. At the end of each day, the rangers collect them and bring them into the office for people to retrieve.

Cons:

It gets extremely busy during the weekends and with the sharing of blue and white fairways, it can be tough to have your round go smoothly. Sometimes park goers end up meandering through the course or post up on the fields of hole 2, 17, and 18. Some people can get a little lost going from hole 4 to 5 and 17 to 18. Parts of the course can get very muddy during the spring season (although to a true disc golfer, this will not stop them from playing). Not many trash cans for trash (please carry out what you carry in)

Other Thoughts:

For those allergic to poison ivy, beware throughout the warmer months. As a heads up, there is a $5 parking fee for the day. There are also lots of trails and other activities that happen at this park aside from disc golf.

For those that have an issue finding hole 5: walk the path from the hole 4 basket, walk across the hole 18 fairway until you see the dirt road/path going across the field (the mansion will be on your left and the parking lot on the right). You will then reach the entrance to the park. On your left you should see a pathway that leads to the tee pads for blue and white.

For those that have an issue finding hole 18: from the basket, walk up by the right side of the tennis court, and you will see a path. Walk through the little stone garden/fountain area and up the hill. You should then see a little hill and a stone roadway. The tee pads for 18 are just past that.

Borderland Bash 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 21, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Borderlands State Park is super crazy awesome. The dual tee, and dual basket layout is the best I have seen at achieving a disc golf double helix, 18 holes that feels like 36. Instead of the white tee being on a similar line as the blue, but shorter distance, here they are frequently carved out on a separate line with a totally different look. Placement on every available tee area or pin location were skillfully chosen, this layout rocks. Tees were good, nicely done rubber mats, usually spacious and level. Very complete signage marking every tee. A pair of Chainstar baskets on every hole, white and blue. All were in good shape, as I recall. While the 4 configurations of each hole optimize versatility, the park is an ideal setting for disc golf. The course mixes in woods, with sometimes extremely rocky fairways, and grassy meadows and hills, with a few scattered trees. Elevation can be a factor, but usually in moderate amounts. Water is never a major issue. Playing the longest blue/blue layout would be epic, I chose to play a slightly less difficult white/blue layout. Did not fare too well. Finished with a 65, 1 over par. It is a short walk from the parking lot and the practice basket, past the visitor center to the first tee. From the first hole you know you're in for a treat. I can't give hole by hole breakdown, but they are all quality just about any angle. 2 is a monster par 5 on the blue pin. 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, and 15, were all cool, 3 being my favorite. The blue pin is on the edge of a boulder, and if you miss right side you are putting from the bottom of it 8 feet beneath the level of the pin. I did just that, and two putted for par. The rocky outcroppings and stone walls dividing parts of some holes are a great element.

Cons:

Parking toll at park entrance $2. The front nine is interrupted by a long walk between holes 4 and 5. After 4, you walk past the 18th tee, across the grass, into the woods again. There are no trash cans, guests in the park should pack out their trash. Should but don't, litter was on the ground throughout. Not a ton, but way too much for a park this nice. Dogs must remain on a leash.

Other Thoughts:

One or two average holes, majority good to great. Borderlands was fun and totally worth the visit. Rating of over 4 fully valid. A course that has complex and interesting personality.

Wonderful wooded course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 18, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Set in an absolutely beautiful wooded state park.

2 rubber tee pads on each hole, with a tee sign for each. Tee signs are good, with distances to both baskets (see below), as well as accurate topography. I don't usually love rubber teepads, but these were almost all completely flat, and even a bit wet, they performed well.

2 different baskets on each hole (DGA and Discatcher). White/blue placement. I LOVE this concept. You can play this course in 4 different configurations, which offers a very high replay factor. All baskets caught well.

Navigation was pretty simple, with signs at nearly every hole pointing out the proper direction. Hole 4 to 5's transition is long, and not overly intuitive.

Heavily wooded course, but there were fair lines on every hole. Some were tight, but if you're throwing well that day, very satisfying to hit.

Brooms on nearly every hole to sweep off the tee pads was a nice touch.

Great course for all skill levels, as the white/white configuration isn't overly long.

Decent elevation changes in many spots, although no "top o' the world" shots are found here.

Cons:

Not many to speak of.

Rubber tee pads aren't the greatest, but these are about as good as they get.

$2 for parking, but it's a pittance for what you're getting. If anything, it probably helps to keep the chuckers away.

No water in play here (with the exception of some marshy areas).

Other Thoughts:

This is probably one of my new favorite courses. If you prefer open courses, this probably won't be your cup of tea.

Parking is ample here.

Lost disc box near the visitor center.

In my opinion, this is a must play if you're in the area. Be prepared to hike a bit, though, as the terrain is rough. Lots of rocks and boulders to be found. Wear good shoes!

Pros:

Long course with two baskets and teepads per hole.
-Challenging
-Scenic
-enjoyable changes in elevation
- enjoyed being able to throw all manner of hyzer and anhyzer shots.
- Great mix of open and tightly wooded shots
- great pin placements

Cons:

Poor next tee signage. Generally speaking the next hole signage is difficult if playing the blue holes. I found that the blue tees were hard to find for a first timer. Hole three is very difficult to find from the blue basket on two.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed the challenge and hope to par it next time. Loved it.

Excellent course layout with different tee/basket combinations being challenging enough to replay several times in a day. I enjoyed the diverse pin locations and skill shots necessary to score well. Very upkept and the mansion is a beautiful side trip!!

Cons:

Slow large groups block play but normally are courteous enough to let people play through. Course map is useless, please make larger and not so grainy!!

Other Thoughts:

Overall awesome course, only pet peeve is with the players not the course...if you're experienced enough to carry 20+ discs play from the blues and stop bragging about -10 rounds from the whites! Free up the whites for inexperienced players to have some fun!

Two sets of Fly Pads on every hole with two sets of pins means a wide variety of layouts can be played. If an issue exists on the course it is taken care of immediately. The club puts all of it's money back into the course to keep up with improvements.

Cons:

It gets really crowded with beginner players that play in large groups on the most difficult course. Often times that will be followed up with groups of 2 players that are playing the short course and want to play through every group.

Fun and challenging course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 11, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

As far as I can tell, the course is almost a perfect course in so many ways. The white to white tee to pin offers a challenging amateur course to play with the option of playing white tees to blue pins for a slightly longer more challenging layout.

Now you have pro pads which are the blue pads. You can play a very challenging Blue to white or the hardest blue to blue.

Holes are clearly marked with signs to the next hole and nice rubber tee pads with good signage.

Cons:

Course can get a little backed up on a crowded day with the multiple tee pads / pins.

It is a state park so you have a lot of families walking, however, mostly off the course or behind a tee pad.

The layouts only offer information on white to white or blue to blue. With measurements to all 4 tees, however, no par 3/4 on the sign when one is marked a par 4 and the other is clearly a par 3; or vice versa. Tee 2 from white to white is is 430 and wide open, however Tee 2 from white to blue is 900ft with a narrowing point in the middle of 2 fields. There are many par 4's on the blue tees and would be nice if they added correct par information for each pin combination on each tee's sign making a total of four playable five star courses.

Other Thoughts:

Because the park does not run a trash program on the course but does have trash cans near the start of the disc golf course, it would be nice if patrons of the disc golf course would carry a trash bag with them once in a while since the course is littered with bottles and cans at times. This just calls for a little community effort of not playing the blame game but just picking up your own course. Love the course and hope to see the small improvements it needs to be the best course in New england.

2 totally different pads and baskets. Shorts were still tough and technical. Longs were long and technical. 2 totally different courses. Played with a local and said they play the opposite tees to the different baskets. 4 courses in 1. Lots of diversity and cant really remember a bad shot. Had lots of fun and it was a awesome walk thru some cool scenery. A cool place to take your family. It had lots of stuff to do. You could easily spend the day out here playing the courses. $2 bucks per carload not a bad deal at all.

Cons:

Though to navigate but ran into local and he played along.

Other Thoughts:

The northeast disc golf community was very awesome. I played 2 courses on my vacation. All the people we ran into on the course was very helpful. What i learned about the Boston area disc golf is that it takes forever to get to the park. Not a place to go play 2 different parks. This course would make that trip happen.

Pros:

OVERALL FUN FACTOR (16% weight) - 5 - This is a very fun course - even the hike around the course itself is fun if you take away the disc part alltogether.
COURSE DESIGN (14% weight) - 4.5 - One of the strongest points for borderland. The course layout is excellent with 2 tee and 2 basket placements for each hole helps keep the course interesting if you play it over and over again. Only downside is the distance between holes 4 and 5.
SIGNS/MAPS/MARKERS (11% weight) - 5 - All tees well marked and "next tee" signs make navigating the course easy.
TEE PADS (8% weight) - 5 - great rubber teepads with shovels and brooms to keep them cleaned off.
ELEVATION (8% weight) - 5 - Lots of great elevation changes.
SCENIC BEAUTY (8% weight) - 5 - On the grounds of a beautiful state park with pond, stone walls, gardens and a stone mansion. Lots of weddings held on the grounds in the summertime.
BASKETS (5% weight) - 5 - Nice baskets in good condition and excellent placements make for interesting and fun putting.
EPIC HOLES (5% weight) - 5 - I love holes 3, 4 and 12 - keep me coming back!
DISTANCE VARIETY (5% weight) - 5 - Excellent mix of short and long holes and even more variety from whites to blues.
SHOT VARIETY (5% weight) - 5 - Layout requires shots to turn left, right and weave through trees.
FOLIAGE MAINTENANCE (3% weight) - 3 - Generally well kept, but there's lots of poison ivy so keep an eye out in the summer.
BENCHES / TRASH BINS (3% weight) - 4 - Benches and sitting logs on a few holes. Trash cans all along the way.
MIX OF TIGHT AND OPEN (3% weight) - 5 - a few long open holes to air it out as well as technical woodsy holes
OVERALL CHALLENGE (3% weight) - 5 - Blue to Blue is especially challenging for any skill level.

Cons:

CROWDED (3% weight) - 2 - The downside of Borderland is the crowds, lots of large groups playing on Saturdays and Sundays makes play slow, especially in nice weather. Plenty of non-disc golfers out in the park also but they generally stay clear of the throwing areas.

Other Thoughts:

Yes, this is my home course, but i'm rating it objectively against the other courses I have played around the country and I am very lucky to have such a gem so close to my home. The more I play other courses the more I appreaciate this one!

Pros:

Multiple tees offer challenges for all players and great variety. Very well maintained course on a great location. Signs are extremely helpful. Holes a great mix of long holes to let it rip, and shorter, tighter holes with challenging trees.

Cons:

Nothing major... holes 5 and 18 are a ways away from 4 and 17 respectively. The park is very popular so you'll run into people not playing DG, but this rarely happens.

Other Thoughts:

The best course I have played yet! Beautiful location on the grounds of an old mansion just a half hour from Boston. The course has the best variety of holes that I've every played, with some holes extremely long (like the 910 ft hole 2) and some very challenging winding between trees.

The only real downside to this course is that the park is so popular that you might see a lot of other DGers or hikers around the park. I played on a Friday afternoon and there were several people, but it was never problem, and we never had to wait to tee off.

This truly is a must play for any DGer, at any skill level.

Pros:

Fantastic piece of land that reminds me of the old aristocrat estate of Wickham, CT. Truly a peaceful experience of birds chirping and discs occasionally hitting lumber. Great signs, four layouts with dual tees and pins (like Warwick NY). The layout is magnificent, challenging and fair - White to white is the easiest layout, with many ace runs that are also challenging. The mixes of white to blue & blue to white are even tougher, and the blue to blue is a long and tough challenge mixing in several par 4's. it would be hard to get bored with all the variety here.

Locals were friendly and seemed to know how lucky they were. There are not a lot of options in the greater Boston area, so this is just what the doctor ordered. Ample parking and facilities and not much to want

Cons:

Very slight elevation changes , but this is minor.
One very long walk to #5 but the sign on #4 did lead me the right direction.
Drainage is an issue after a big rainfall - I experienced this on one occasion - where hole 5 in particular caused us to leap frog from rock to rock to avoid getting our feet wet!

The locals were very cool - I joined up with a couple of guys on a crowded Saturday who really enhanced the experience and helped me learn the course!

Pros:

Very diverse course. The white course is not too difficult for beginners while still providing a chance for more expierenced players to improve on their skill shots. The blue course is amazing. Holes are long and almost always the pin is in a straight line with the tee but trees and other obstacles force players to make shots that will navigate.

Cons:

A little hard to find next tee at times(but really just look at the sign at the tee before throwing and it shows you the way). The walk from 4 to 5 is long but nice.

Other Thoughts:

I would give this course a five just in my opinion but it is the only course I have played so I have no comparison. Well worth 2 dollars for parking. For first time players it makes more sense to try and stay in the fairway rather than the go for pin drives(disc can get lost very easily when straying off the fairway).

All baskets had orange flags on them. Have a field you can warm up on as well as a practice basket to toss some pre / post game putts. friendly atmosphere. the pay to park machine was busted and was free. it's worth two bucks anyways

Tremendous course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 20, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Great for seasoned disc players. Some outrageously cool and challenging shots over 18 holes. A lot of acreage; holes are longer and more difficult than average. Sometimes I've played the front nine and it feels like I've played a full 18 on some other courses. Well-marked. Beautiful- it's a state park. Just the right amount of open (approx 1 in 4 holes) versus wooded (approx 3 in 4 holes) holes. Requires distance and accuracy. Some great elevation changes and plenty of doglegs. There are plenty of trees to hit, but still some open-enough fairways to have some spectacular drives. Cheap to play ($2 parking).

Cons:

Can get a little jammed on nice days (this is because disc golfers know it's a winner). Long and hard if you're used to some other courses (this isn't really a con for someone who plays a lot and loves disc). I think the back nine is slightly less interesting, challenging and dynamic than the front nine- but still solid.

Other Thoughts:

I highly, highly recommend it. Hands down one of the best out of the 10 or 15 courses I've played. Maybe THE best. I've played it 20 or so times over 5 years and it stands up very well over time. In fact, I think the more I've played the sport the better Borderland compares with other courses. A real gem. The ONLY reason I don't give it a full '5' is that I feel I need to have played more courses before I can call a course 'perfect'.

Amazing 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 7, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Borderland State Park is an old estate that the government gained control of and opened up as a park that now features one of the greatest places I've ever played disc golf. There are two tees and two baskets, that remain in place, on every hole. That's a total of 72 hole combinations! Being my fist time, I played all the long holes so I could get the full experience, as a result my experience lacked short holes. Next time I play this course (and I have to come back) I will alternate the short and longs in some way. The course tee pads are well built with crushed red gravel complete with a rake, many with benches and trash cans. There are maps on every tee pad, showing the locations of the other baskets as well as the direction of the next tee pad. The course is a mixture of open pastures lined with trees and wooded holes with slight hills of a good variety of length. Some of the scenery includes an old mansion with ivy climbing it, ancient farming equipment, grey boulders, stone walls and trees galore. There are so many looks, baskets protected by walls and boulders, right and left dog legs, so many that I lost a trusted disc (my fist loss in about a year). I'll post a few pictures because this place deserves to be seen.

Cons:

Paying to park, but its hard for me to complain about $2 as I would have been just as pleased with my experience if I had to pay $20. The course was a tad hard to find, I'm still wondering if exit 10 really exists off of 95. There is a pretty crazy long walk from 4 to 5.

Other Thoughts:

The day I played was in the 90's with very high humidity. I a was wasted, dehydrated, drenched in sweat, in awe of what I just experienced. The course was a brute, leaving a hand full of 5's and 6's even an 8 on my scorecard, well earned and no push over at all.
