A Change of Pace in Delaware 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 18, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Wide open, immaculately- groomed park course where the challenge comes from accurate placement despite dramatic elevation change and wind

+ Every hole requires thinking through the line, angle and landing you want to throw. The difference between Brandywine and neighboring Delaware courses is that the obstacles aren't visible trees to be avoided: they're elevation, wind and slanted terrain to be compensated for

+ Two sets of baskets that allow for some variety (although much of it is just distance)

+ The designers did a great job incorporating existing features into the course: there's a treed shelf that serves to elevate the first tee and the ninth green, there are old stone walls that run along some fairways, there's a barn and some related small buildings that give the sense of playing on an old farm

+ There are some amazing views from some of the tees and some really picture-worthy holes. Tee #1 is tightly framed by trees with a stone wall running the length of the fairway on the right. Holes #2 and #3 include a few dramatic huge dead trees. Hole #9 has a raised and well-guarded green. The long pin on #13 is perched on an impossibly-high hilltop (that would be a 420' par three with 57' of elevation). The fairway on #18 is a long upward slope bringing you back up to the start of the course

+ Great signage, decent tees and baskets. Well-mowed and completely clean

Cons:

- The one par 4 on the course (600+ foot #5), is just a straight, long hole that doesn't require strategic placement like a wooded dogleg or a water hole does

- The rough is really...rough. Large swaths of knee-deep grasses that make finding discs difficult and time-consuming. The position of the rough is never unfair - there are always adequate (even generous) landing zones. But allowing the rough to be so deep does more than just punish the bad shot: it slows down play. If there's any traffic on this course you're probably going to do a lot of waiting or jumping ahead

- Even though I've praised the views and argued in favor of the "technical" nature of throwing in elevation, I would have liked some more terrain variety. There are wooded areas at the edges of two sides of the course, and a few flat, treed holes would really add to the layout. There appears to be some redesign work going on (especially on #16, where all the basket positions on the tee sign were taped over), so I hope there's also some consideration for incorporating some woods, and not just adding length

Other Thoughts:

~ This course is very cart-friendly, and it's a workout. There's a lot of climbing back up hills you've thrown down. At various times, I was sorry to be pulling a cart behind me

~ Brandywine lends itself to an obvious pairing with "classically treed" Delaware courses. We played Lums Pond, Iron Hill, and White Clay Creek before Brandywine, and Canby West after. There are LOTS of trees to be found in Delaware; Brandywine is just a different sort of course

Fun Course - Will go Back 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 28, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Concrete Teepads are nice and are not too worn in so you get some good grip off of them.
- Multiple Pin placements on a lot of the holes.
- Hills, Hiils, Hills. There are a lot of fun shots out there, where you are throwing from on top of, the bottom of and on the side of some pretty big hills. 100'+ drops or increases in elevation of some holes, make you think about more than just what distance you need to throw your disc.
- Very easy to get to and even if it is not for you then just getting lost and driving around in the area is beautiful.
- Some great scenery from some of the high points on the course. Walking around and not playing would be a joy but having a disc golf course there is great.
- There are a lot of very well placed baskets on this course. There seemed to be a lot of thought into where they should all go. A lot of risk reward shots so you get to choose what type of golf you want to play. Very fun.
- Big Parking Lot.
- Flow from hole to hole was pretty seamless for the most part, there was only maybe 1 hole where I had issues.

Cons:

- Finding hole 1 took me a while and I only found it because there were other people that were walking to it. A sign pointing you in the right direction would be nice.
- I believe it was getting to hole 10 where I had the only issue with not knowing where the hole was but after 15 min of walking around I did find it.
- I did not know that 17 had a long tee until I played the hole in a tourney and thats where we played form.
- The tee pad on hole 4 needs some work. Its just a walking path and there is no clear cut point to where you have to tee from. Its a long hole and behind the tee there is pretty much no run up so it is kinda annoying.

Other Thoughts:

- You do have to pay to park at the course so keep that in mind when you go there.
- There are quite a few blind shots at the course so if you are playing it for the first time be prepared to do a lot of walking up to find the holes.

- Overall I really really enjoyed playing this course and would suggest that if anybody is in there area then you should play it. If I am ever back in Delaware I will 100% play it again.

Good Course in the Wilm. Area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 9, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Beautiful, larger fairways, and good variety. Most holes are straight, or off to the right, so straight disc and disc with good turn are encouraged. I usually throw a Destroyer on straight, and a Sidewinder/Beast on those right of center (RHBH Thrower)

Cons:

Wind, and the occasional hole where throwing your disc in the tall rough seems unavoidable (hole 11)

Other Thoughts:

Favorite course I have played in Delaware so far.

Will Definitely Play Again 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 7, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Beautiful park
-Change of elevation
-Variety in types of holes
-Multiple holes that leave you with the thought you would love to play that hole again
-Concrete Tee Pads
-Can be easy and difficult at the same time
-Tee boxes are always within eye sight of where you are finishing off
-Signs do give a general idea as to where you should be throwing

Cons:

-Many tee boxes are close to the pins from the previous hole which could make it dangerous if there are many people on the course
-not always clear which Pin the basket is in
-Make sure you have a spotter on holes where the grass is high or you will never find your disc. Couple of blind holes require a spotter as well

Other Thoughts:

After playing Iron hill in the morning, and White clay right after that, my friends and I were unsure as to whether we wanted to make the trek to Brandywine. After relaxing for a half hour, we made the decision to go because of what some friends of ours had said about the course. We could not have been happier or more rewarded. This is a really beautiful memorable course. There were so many holes that as we stood on the box, we thought this was a sweet looking hole. There is not a ton of variety in the types of shots you have to throw at this course, but you definitely want to keep your disc in site because tall grass and thick woods can grab your disc quickly. I am always a fan of Innova disc catchers, but the mach baskets were usually easy to find because of the open layout. The downhill throws such as I think 11, 14, and 15 are really picturesque holes that are the types that you say to yourself....I would really love to ace this. Being only a half hour from finishing at White clay earlier in the day....I would recommend this course to anyone close to it. My friends and I all agreed that out of the three, would probably all choose to play Brandywine again before Iron Hill, and lastly White Clay. The open layout allows for novice players to score well, but the challenge of distance and accuracy can really push an experienced player.

Beautiful but Frustrating 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 15, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Scenic, 18 hole open course in a nice state park. Very challenging course with tremendous elevation figuring into all but about 2 or 3 holes. Practice basket and porta pottie on site. Course has sufficiently sized tee pads, signs and working Mach 5 baskets at every hole. Some really nice holes here- #1 is a tee shot from between two trees, #3 is a diagonal shot to a basket over a rock wall and signature hole #4 is a long downhill shot then a right turn to a basket in the flat over a creek- as good a hole as there is anywhere. Two basket placements per hole. Navigation is pretty easy. Decent balance of distance and shorter holes.

Cons:

Wind can be brutal and wreak havoc on your round. Signs and several tee pads need upgrades, and the welcome board by the practice basket is a disaster. Favors the guy with the big arm. Inaccurate throws lead to loads of trouble with unforgiving rough. Fairway grass sometimes not cut. Pay to play. Some "next tee" signs would be helpful. Ticks all over the place- bring spray. Benches and bag poles would be welcomed.

Other Thoughts:

Brandywine is loved by many for its topography; scenic views, elevation and beautiful rock walls are ever present. It will be disliked by those who favor technical courses or people who don't have big arms. The wind here can be absolutely brutal, and quite honestly can make for a rotten round. I didn't have much fun the day I played here but have nonetheless rated the course objectively and appreciate its challenges.

More than 30 years old, Brandywine still packs a punch but needs considerable attention. New signs are needed here and several tee pads have seams which can affect your stance and throw. In my opinion, before new courses like Iron Hill are tweaked, more attention to upgrades needs to be given to places like Lum's, Brandywine and Cape Henlopen- historic places that have been good to the sport. A trip to Brandywine is recommended, but prepare for a physically demanding and possibly frustrating afternoon.

Lovely 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 29, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Easy to find. Fantastic scenery. Lots of elevation. Nice challenge. Good signage and concrete tees. Navigation is fairly easy without a map. Some really fun and memorable holes with alot of opportunity to air it out.

Cons:

Some tees in need of repair with some slight slopes and cracks. A little repetitive with the open shots. Park fee of $6 out of state between February and December. In the summer the rough is really brutal, and it can still be so in the spring, fall and winter, as well. The elevation can also be seen as a con due to some tough hikes, but it also provide, at least for this slacker, some well needed exercise.

Other Thoughts:

I've played this course multiple times and it was one of my first few ever. In the beginning I hated this course due to some of the hole lengths, the elevation and the fact that most of the holes are completely open. However, as I have improved my game, I find these same aspects to be absolute pros. I recently played here in a little snowstorm and I have to say it was one of my favorite DG experiences of late. The elevation can be tough with some long walks and throws uphill, especially #5 "THe Beast", but it truly does add to the whole experience as well. The pin placements help to augment each hole's layout and some are just great including 4, 6, 9, 14 and 16. Great use of existing strucutres including the rock walls, the water, an old well and the barn. Being as the course is open and set up high in rolling hills, the wind can truly become an added challenge, but I enjoy the ability to learn my discs better while playing this course. Overall, Brandywine is a little older of a course for an area that boasts Iron Hill and Carousel, but I still very much enjoy its uniqueness and it holds up very well as its own experience. It provides a great chance to learn how to throw for distance as well as to break in new discs. It is a solid course with a good dose of individuality and lots of fun.

Scenic with rolling hills 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 22, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Scenery- rolling hills make or beautiful views overlooking brandywine valley. The use of walls divided fairways as well as a beautiful asset to the course.
Good variety with what they had- overall the variety was ok (see cons). That being said, with the land that they were given, you could tell the thought was there. I enjoyed the addition of the creek on hole 4 which offered variety as well as an enjoyable challenge. Although you may not have to use all the shots you have in your bag, the defined fairways dictate many different lines.
Tee signs and baskets in good shape- baskets were a little bit rusty but caught well. I have heard that baskets are changed but have never witnessed different pin positions. The some of the concrete pads are showing wear but most are in good shape.
Elevation- this is the biggest pro for this course and for me the difference between a 3 and a 4 because of the shear immensity of the elevation changes and the use of it throughout the course.

Cons:

Grass can get very high -For the quality of this course I was not impressed with the level of maintenance. The grass was high which led to me losing a disc.
Variety- as said before variety was ok. I said what parts hd variety, but many holes lacked variety. There were too many straight and uninteresting shots.

Other Thoughts:

Enjoy a round and a nice piece of history when you come to this course.

A disc golfer was born 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 1, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Absolutely incredible course...This is mostly a field course with some woods patches and holes right along the woods. There's a beautiful stone wall slicing through the course making the place look like 18th or 19th century America. A wide array of different shots due to elevation changes, tree obstacles, a creek affecting a few holes, deadly brush bordering fairways on quite a few holes, and a cool barn to bootleg around. This course is home to The Beauty and The Beast, holes 4 and 5--the first of which is a thin fairway downhill bordered by chaos (which you pretty much need to throw beyond from the tee to play successfully) down to a park road and a creek with a bridge over to the basket; the latter hole 5 is a monster steady uphill hole that big arms have trouble reaching basket vicinity in 3 shots (this hole also bordered on the right by chaotic death bushes). Seemingly easy open shots prove tougher with wind, making the course tricky at times. Holes 12 and 14 are ego boosting open downhill holes. The first hole on the course immediately shows the course's aesthetic superiority. Rarely ever crowded. Tee boxes in good shape. "Around the World" varied distance stone markers on practice basket for putting games.

Cons:

Could use better signs with accurate pars and distances. For new players, signs to next holes would be beneficial. This place eats discs on errant throws throughout most of the course, so be careful. Basically, watch your throws on the front 9! Pay to play a con for some. Some cross country meets cutting through fairway, so watch out for runners in the spring and fall. Wind can be an issue.

Other Thoughts:

This was the first course I ever played. It is THE reason I fell in love with the sport. It will always be my homest of home courses. Absolutely gorgeous rolling hills with surrounding woods.

My home course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 24, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is situated in the most beautiful part of Delaware. The downhill tee shots are some of the most exciting shots I've seen anywhere in DG. There is no hole in DG that is more beautiful and challenging than the beauty (#4). It's my home course, I play it frequently, and after a woods course I have to come to Brandywine to release some of the pent up aggression. Let's just say that with this as my home course accuracy is not my strong suit.

Cons:

Grass! I hate tall grass rough, but I guess they have to do something on the course to penalize you for an errant shot and trees in this park are out of the question.

The absolute worst part of this course is the occasional lack of maintenance by the park staff, particularly not mowing the fairways. There have been times in the spring where the grass has been knee high. That makes for a long round: trudging through knee high grass, climbing those hills, and having to look for your disc after a perfect drive that landed in the middle of the fairway. My favorite time to play is on calm winter days. The grass and the rough are guaranteed to be short from November to mid-March.

Other Thoughts:

In my opinion, this course is a must if you're in the area. There are few courses that allow you to air it out like Brandywine and few places anywhere in the northeast that are as beautiful to play. Fall is especially a picturesque time to play the course. If coming from a long distance to play in the spring or early summer I would call first to confirm that the course has been recently mowed (and let the staff know that you'll be skipping the park if it is, in fact, not recently mowed). I love Brandywine, but I avoid it like the plague when the fairways are tall.

Historic Setting for Historic Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 12, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

What a setting to play DG, historic battelfield with rock walls that were rebuilt in the Great Depression (by DuPont family employing people without work), Imagine charging up those hills with cannons and muskets shots at you - wel that is how exciting the disc golf is here.
Wonderful use of the space - for a mostly wide open are with little trees in play, this course plays great with not much repetition.
Downhill bombs, uphill crushing holes, cross hill shots - all made more challenging by the prevailing winds that seem to be stronger at Brandywine than the rest of DE.
Some holes are duecable, and others are much tougher more like par 4s.
This is one of the earlier courses in the area, 1980 - and is still more advanced than some newer courses. For todays plastic and longer thowers - amazing design way ahead of its time.

Cons:

pay to play - $3 in state per car, $6 out of state.
Allows certain types of players to excell - Long throwers that use stable plastic do much better than short arms and understable plastic throwers - based on prevailing winds, length and terrain.
The park does not maintain the course as good as they could, and the park has not been overly friendly to volenteers - go figure...
Some of the tees have aged, need some leveling and have cracked, but after 30 years that happens.
This park also caters to the Cross County course, as its one of the better courses in the state parks and hold many large high school meets every year.

Other Thoughts:

Nice scenery, great views of the creek, rolling hills surround park, historic site adds some intrigue and nostalgia.
Those rock walls are amazing, but some spots have deteriorated and are falling down, would be nice if the park could get experienced masons to repair them.

beautiful windy hill beast. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 22, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

The scenery was great with lots of elevation changes and several risk vs. reward shots and decent flow.

There was a practice basket set up with stones to play around the world or horse while you wait for hole 1, wait for your friends, or warm up.

Putting areas were perfectly groomed and overall the course was well maintained.

multiple pin positions and cleary visable cement tee pads and decent signage.

Long flags helped make the pins visable over the elevation changes and showed wind direction (very important here)

I like hole 9, putting over the rock wall, but holes 4 and 5 are the signature holes "the beauty" and the "the beast".
The beast was a 666ft totally blind up hill shot (basket hinding under a broken tree in the brush). Holes 6 and 10 have risky drop offs that make you think about your approach.

Once you get away from holes 1,9,and 10 there is little other traffic on the course.

Cons:

worst con: putting $6 in an envelope, sliding the envelope into an honor system box in the parking lot and walking away from your $.
All holes seemed to have the same formula: wide open with trees around the baskets.
If I did not take notes and prepare mysleIf, I would have wasted alot of time finding some of the baskets and would never have found hole 17.
Tall grass and thorns can eat your plastic, so watch your throws very carefully, you may need spotters in some areas.

I am sure this course is brutal in the summer with the long walks up and down the hill totally exposed to the sun for hours, bring water!

Other Thoughts:

Before you go to this course go to the links section and take check out the course walk through (take notes).

The wind makes the course much colder in the fall and winter and adds a whole new play element.

Be prepared for atleast a 2 hour work out. The course is shorter than Carousel, but a harder workout. The distance between pins is 6,000-7,000 feet (which is over a mile for the math inclinde)

Brandywind 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 24, 2001 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I've been 'round this track many times, and (almost) always had fun. If you want to improve your wind game, this is the place. It's located on the highest point in the state- admittedly Delaware is not known for altitude- and it gets severely windy here. Some days a ten foot putt is going to be be the hardest shot you play. (some windless days that's true...for me!) It's scenic, and varied, and wide open. #15 has always been my favorite hole because of it's look, not because I play it particularly well. Honorable mention to #3, a very birdiable affair with elevation danger if you miss left.
The famed beauty/beast combo is somewhat over-rated, with beauty being far superior to beast as a golf hole. Driving on the beast is just plain uncomfortable, and awkward. But the beauty is a joy to drive on, provided you don't go right, or get unlucky and land in the creek. Love it- play here if you can. Pick a windy day for maximum challenge.

Cons:

Very few cons here. Can be rather brutal on a hot day, and there are some strange drives required on a few holes. The grass gets tall so watch your disc closely. There have been days when it's just TOO WINDY to have a good time.

Other Thoughts:

When this course was first installed, it was a 9 holer, and the late great Pryor Hendrix shot a round of 18- total score. Pryor did stuff like that. I miss him.

Go For a Ride on the Grip-N-Rip Rollercoaster 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 7, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Two pin positions per hole. Good signs at tee showing current basket position and distances. Nice long-n-wide concrete teepads. Two nine-hole loops starting/ending near parking lot. Baskets with flagpoles making them easier to spot from a distance. Great views of the surrounding countryside from the top of the hill. Stone walls along some holes an interesting feature. Easy course to navigate. Very impressive webpage at http://playdg.com/courses/?s=...;c=brandywine

Cons:

$6 to enter park. The edges of some fairways are defined by tall, featureless grass - combined with the woods and creek along/backing some holes, and there is a moderate chance to lose a disc. A couple of teepads too close to the previous basket, causing a delay in teeing off.

Other Thoughts:

If you like to watch your discs fly, this is the course for you! The course plays down, across, and up one very long hill which comprises this public park. Most every hole will have some type of elevation change, some quite severe. Holes 1-9 form a roughly counter-clockwise loop, while 10-18 go around in a clockwise formation. Located on a former farm, there are a few ~4' stone walls scattered about, with some fairways playing parallel to them, and some baskets being located near them. Find yourself on the wrong side of the wall, and you may barely see the top of the basket during your putt attempt (#9 is specifically designed this way - immediately behind the wall, thick trees behind it.). On about 2/3rds of these holes, your favourite distance driver is going to get a workout, because they are long, and/or (#5 is an "and") uphill. A few long downhill holes where you'll just get to let it rip and enjoy watching your disc fly. "Touch" shots required on downhill-but-shorter holes 11,12, and 14, and #17 is a short but extreme right-turner. Most fairways are fairly wide open, but the approach to most baskets will generally be somewhat guarded by some trees, or one of the walls.

Favourite hole: #16. One of the flatter holes, just over 400' . Farm building to your left, collection of large trees about 275' away and slightly right. After getting past these obstacles, there is a mild turn to the left and another 150' to the basket.

A very fun course to play, and certainly worth a visit - you'll likely find yourself wanting to play it again whenever you're anywhere nearby.

One of Delaware's Best 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 6, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

First of all this is a beautiful course. It has the feel of a civil war battlefield. It is one of the highest points in Delaware so it provides some great vistas of the surrounding area. These high points allow some great long drives even for beginners, holes 4 (beauty), 12 and 14 come to mind. Players with big arms have a definite advantage on this course. However, the length can be deceptive and there are penalties for over driving on some of the holes keeping the big arms honest. Holes 2, 6 and 11 have these fast greens keeping the just "air it out" strategy in check.
This course also utilizes elevation change in a great way both providing great opportunities to watch a long drive in flight and playing mental games driving uphill. Holes 5 (beast), 7, 8 and 15 require a player to drive uphill which can really level the playing field if a player is not used to it.

Cons:

I really appreciate a balanced course. One that has open and tight fairways; long, short and medium length holes. Brandywine does not have this type of variety. While there are a couple of holes with protected baskets (holes 5, 7, 8, 14 and 17) most of the holes are almost completely open. A couple of forested holes or technical fairways would really do wonders to round out this great course. Maybe utilize the river, require a shot across the river and through the trees to a basket on the other side. There is a perfect spot for this on the backside of hole 13.

Other Thoughts:

This course does take a while to play (about two hours for a couple not in a hurry) because of the length of the course but there is really no reason to rush because of the great setting.
While searching for a disc down the hill past hole 11 I discovered an old tee pad pointing down toward the river. Maybe this course did at one time play across the river?

Fun, Hilly course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 2, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

All tees are concrete and were kept very clean. Each basket has a flag on it that makes it easier to see when going up hill. A very fun and challenging variety of terrain will make you use all your shots. Even though it may look like a "just huck it" course, it's definately not. Signs at every tee that map out the hole. Very nice stairs are put in where steep uhills exist, making the climbs a little easier on the legs. Hole 17 actually uses an old barn as an obstacle. Some of the greens are very fast and challenging. You're P&A game will be tested nicely. Practice basket next to the first tee is a nice added bonus. Course itself is kept very very clean. I didn't spot 1 peice of trash which shows that the locals really care about the course.

Cons:

No Major Cons to speak of. The uphill walks could be tiring if you're not in really good shape. The tee sign maps aren't very detailed so finding the pin isn't always "super easy." Park goers often walking around the course can be annoying if they dont' realize whats going on. A couple holes were a little repetitive and boring.

Other Thoughts:

The area that this course is in is amazing. Its very calm and peaceful. The "Local Pro" was there doing some fixing up to the course and he was very nice and made me feel welcome. Very old rock walls are really cool if you're into that kinda stuff. Grills and picnic tables near parking lot incase you want to have a bbq after you play. If you get to hole 15 (long downhill), and nobody is playing close behind you. There's a big rock right next to tee. Take some time and just sit and look around and you see beautiful countryside for miles. Very picturesque.

Shots range from a shot in between two trees and along a stone wall (hole 1) to down a hill over a creek and around a wooded area (hole 4 nicknamed the Beauty) to a 666 ft. shot straight uphill (hole 5 nicknamed the Beast). It is not a very technical course and lets you just grip and rip most of the shots. Most of the holes, all except for one I think, has two sets of tees to shoot from. There are signs at the beginning of every hole and it clearly is marked for where each tee pad is and what basket you're shooting too. On the way to hole 1 there is a practice basket and a message board that has some valuable information; such as tournaments that are coming up and events like Tuesday doubles night. Some of the baskets are a little tricky as they are right on the edge of a hill so if you overshoot the basket you are running for your disc. On hole 16 you have to drive around a barn and shoot at a basket behind it. That hole was especially fun because we tried to see who could get closest to the barn without hitting it.

Cons:

The cons are few and far between but there are a couple. Hole 3's tee pad is cracked in the middle and slanted down the hill. There is a worn out area behind it that most people tee off from. The course is very hilly and quite long so it might cause problems for those of us that aren't in the best shape. Also it probably isn't the best course for beginners (I shot a 90) and I have been playing for six months. The summer time fee is $5 and I hear that the park rangers are a huge pain in the ass (I went in the winter so I didn't have to pay the fee or deal with the rangers.) There also were some cross country runners that ran down the fairways and by the tee pads; this impeded some of our shots and made us wait until we had clear shots. The variety of holes after the front nine decreases and starts to become repetitive.

Other Thoughts:

There is a whole other side to the park that you could easily add another nine holes and make a good course into a great course. I did not have to pay an entry fee as I went during the winter months, the rangers were not a problem as I didn't run into any; although I have heard they can be. The course was well worth my drive (2 hours) and I played nearby Anson Nixon Park. Bellevue is also an option at about five miles away. All in all a great park and course with courteous locals. Dogs are also allowed as long as they are leashed.

Let em rip. 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 23, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The most beautiful course in northern Delaware, Brandywine is the perfect course for those who like to reach back and let em fly. Big holes, lots of open space and dramatic elevation changes. The course is set up with nice big concrete tee pads, quality baskets and nice signage. Since the course is so open finding you next tee is easy. While the course is very open, no one hole is a simple completely open shot to the basket. Use of tree lines, single trees elevation, water and old stone walls keeps things interesting. And speaking of interesting, Brandywine is almost always windy. Tees are from the highest elevation in Delaware and as such, the course is always windy, its just a question of how windy will it be. My favorite holes are 4, 12 and 14. Big beautiful down hill shots were you can just stand back and watch your disc soar. In contrast these are followed by big uphill holes, but its all good fun.

Cons:

Um.. the wind. Occasionally its just too much and I feel the course is unplayable. Large cross-country meets are often held here and sometimes people will actually park their cars on the course. During the summer the rough gets thick so keep an eye on your discs.

Other Thoughts:

A must play in the tri-state area. Also, be mindful of park rules. They're just doing they're jobs, but the park rangers can be real sticklers. Stop at all stop signs, no matter how ridiculous they seem. I've even heard stories of golfers getting kicked out just for having unopened containers of alcohol in their car.

Pretty Fn 2+ years drive by

Pros:

I really had to focus on my driving for this course! The holes are really long and really push to see how far you can throw it!
I really like how they used the terrain.
Very structured course.

Cons:

Throwing up those huge hills got pretty annoying! I kind of got tired of having to just throw as far as I possibly can each time!

Other Thoughts:

I really liked playing this course; a lot different then other courses I have played!

Pros:

If you're looking for a place to crush drives hundreds of feet, then look no further than this wide open course in northern Delaware. It's an 18 hole course with baskets that are still in pretty good shape, they show a little age but are still really usable. Some holes will offer birdies opportunities to those who can accurately drive a couple hundred feet, and there are some longer holes with a precarious basket location or use one of the stone walls. Now while the course mostly is really open, there are some trees, and by all means you need to avoid them. Locally known for the 3 B's. 4 (the beauty) is a super downhill par 3 that will cross the creek, which has trees on both sides. A well placed drive will net you an easy three, but danger lurks all down the right hand side and also if you leave it short left. 5 (the beast) is a nasty uphill 675' shot that plays more like 800. The treeline comes into play on your last approach shot. 6 (another b-word) has a right turn to a pin location that if you go long, is an absolute drop-off.

Cons:

Only one tee and basket at each hole (but they switch the pin location from time to time). The wind will be a major factor. Disc control and selection will be even more crucial. While the long grass was cut really short this trip, I have played where off the fairway it was really easy to lose discs. I highly recommend a spotter. Some of the concrete tees are not completely smooth, so watch your run-up.

Other Thoughts:

Nominal fee to park (honor system at times). The course has a pretty good mix of uphill and downhill holes, and it is one of my favorites. While no means a destination course, if you are nearby playing some other courses (say Iron Hill for one) and want something different, come play Brandywine. It will definitely teach you how to throw in wind.
