Great course, need to play more

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 29, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Most holes are very wooded and all have good tee boxes. Signage is good and mostly easy to find next tee (16-18 may be exceptions). Must be accurate on most drives - I hit a lot of trees - to get par with a few birdie opportunities, if you avoid hitting trees :). I liked that most holes weren't 500ft, most are around 300ft with the last few holes being longer. Some holes are to the right of the tee but most are left from tee ... OK mix. I really like hole 1 from on top shooting down. I like the use of greens for the last holes.
I think all 18 baskets did have the hole # on the basket.

Cons:

I did have a hard time finding tee 16 and 17, 18 was not as hard to find. One hole the sign was currently inaccurate but did not have a hard time throwing it.

Other Thoughts:

Some holes have "no mans lands" that if you are that far off it may be difficult to find you disc. I thought I was going to not find my disc probably 3 times ... but I did :)

Nice Fun Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 6, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Hole Variety: Lots of long open holes, with a few lightly wooded and several heavily wooded holes.

-Baskets: Discatchers are in good shape and perform well.

-Well Defined Fairways: Whether playing along the ball golf fairways or through the woods, the fairways are well defined and play fairly. #9 is a great example with a 50 foot wide fairway playing right to left and uphill through the woods.

-Risk/Reward: Here is where this course excels! 4 holes play across ponds or have baskets near the water. Some cart path OB throughout. The astro-turf greens provide risk for your approaches if you come in low and hard or at a steep angle. Even the open holes have trees along both sides that make you carefully consider your next shot should you find them. Not that I would know... ahem.

-Loops back to the parking lot at hole 9. I don't know why you would pay $10 to only play 9 holes but you could grab a snack, drink, or extra disc if you fail to navigate the ponds successfully.

-Course maintenance: All of the grass was recently cut and tee pads were free of debris. On the wooded holes the rough can be really rough but to me that just provides a better contrast to the more open holes. Next tee arrows on each pole help with navigation.

-Benches at every tee. I prefer to play quickly but there a couple of holes that I like to take a seat on to enjoy the views.

-Use of Elevation: Excellent mix of downhill, uphill, and valley holes. The third time I played the course I thought, "This is hillier than I remember". Several baskets are perched on or within a few feet of a severe slope.

-Scenic Beauty: This is a fabulous property with rolling hills, mature trees and nicely manicured former ball golf fairways. I would love to come back in the fall when the leaves have turned.

Cons:

-Open holes can feel repetitive: 2, 10, 11, 16, 18, and 19. If a few of these holes were on the front nine it wouldn't feel quite so repetitive. I can't reach any of the par 3s so they are all drive, upshot, putt.

-Tee signs: The wooden posts have a great look and provide good information but at a 45 degree angle they are already fading pretty badly from sun exposure. No hole location indicator poses a problem on holes 10 and 17.

-Shot shaping: The open holes don't require you to shape your shot much. You can throw all hyzers or all forehand shots if you wish. There aren't many holes where you can choose between different routes. Holes 8, 12, and 17 are the only exceptions and they are each <300 feet.

-Potential Safety Issues: There are often people running which causes delays at some of the tee boxes. There are a few places where other resort-goers could be in a bad spot. For example, the tether-ball pole is about 50 feet in front and to the left of the tee for hole 7. 14 and 15 are both blind holes where you could throw into someone accidentally. After teeing off on hole 7 you walk around the pond along the green and fairway for hole 3. As we reached the pond we discovered someone playing hole 3 that we couldn't see from the tee.

Other Thoughts:

-Others have referenced the narrow tee pads but they are level and pointed in the right direction so I don't have any issues with them.

-Long walks from 7 to 8 and 9 to 10 could use another navigational sign along the way to let you know you are heading the right direction.

-I wouldn't call this a championship level course. I am a Rec/Intermediate player and usually shoot around +5. If you have 425 feet of distance and can hit a narrow gap halfway to the pin on a 250 foot throw you will have no problems with this course.

-$10 to play may be a little steep for some. It is a nice course and they obviously keep the grass well-mowed, but having played other high-quality private courses it seems to be on the pricey side.

-Hole 4 is one of the better-designed holes I have played. You can go for the 425 foot water carry to attack the pin from the tee, lay up short of the pond to leave a 220-260 foot approach, or play it out to the right where there is a small landing zone and a gravel path along the pond. Too far right and you end up above the basket with an awkward stance on the slope throwing back toward the pond.

- I really like this course. It is a fun play but has plenty of risk/reward decisions to keep you engaged mentally. Poor shots will be punished on most holes. Could improvements be made? Absolutely, but I always walk away from here having enjoyed myself. If you find yourself within 50 miles of this course, go and check it out. You won't regret it!

Very Imperssive 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 27, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Lots of big elevation changes. Get ready to walk a lot!
- Very neatly cut grass. Some of the baskets even had turf around them like a ball golf course would have.
- Get your throwing arm out cause there is some pretty big throws that you'll have to do.
- Open shots mixed with Wooded shots. They had a good course layout that weaved in and out of the woods that was along the big open fairways.
- It looked like they were building a gazebo at the tee box of hole 1. I always like to see a course that is being improved on. It means that it will become better.

Cons:

- Since I had to pay to play I was disappointment in the lack of signs! Sometimes I even got confused as if I was on the right hole. They gave us a map but it wasn't very detailed and poorly made.
- I have seen better concrete tee boxes and like I said before, since I paid to play I expect more.

Other Thoughts:

- ITS PAY TO PLAY! $10 per person. If you bring a big group ask for a group discount and she'll bring the price down. She let the kids go for free.
- If you lose your disc and have your name and number in it, the store will try and return it to you if it's found.
-The store had a good selection of discs for sale. They also had a used bin where they sold used discs for $5 a piece.
- There are some water hazards and heavy foliage that could potentially lead to a lost disc.
- Bring bug spray

Definitely worth it if your on vacation in Branson.

Regal Golf 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 14, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Branson Cedars is a luxury log cabin resort that offers, along with numerous on-site recreational amenities, a high-caliber 19 hole disc golf course. It is built on a rolling expanse on rocky hills and valleys. Elevation is a factor on every hole, water comes into play on four holes.( A nice touch are the welded rebar retriever poles that are along each pond, assisting in reclaiming water discs)
Starting on one and just going from there, you throw down and right, and then two is Very Down and longish to an elevated putting green. And on. The blue tees made for some long holes, many of which turn right. Winds, the poltergeists of long elevated diosc golf, played havok with me on the front nine (not otherwise what you call a windy day, just while I was playing this course).
All in all, this course requires distance and touch, a solid anny throw and some grit. The up and down of this course made shot judgment a very real considersation. Of course, there are few holes where you just stand at the top of the rise and launch a couple all the way down!
Navigation between holes is pretty straight-forward most of the time, but I did consult the map provided by the office a couple of times.
Several holes have red tees, which is nice.
Benches and trash cans... also nice.
Aesthetically, this is a beautiful property. The holes are pretty to the eyes and fun to play.

Cons:

Permanent tee signs. The laminated maps are very nice, stapled as they are to a log. Don't get me wrong, I love the log. Mount a nice, classy plexiglass map on it and done and done.
Restrooms. There is a restroom in the main office, which is the hub of 1, 9 and 18, but that's it. Unless you've rented a cottage treehouse...
Pay to play. I was told $5 on the phone, clerk said it was $10 for me. (She did say she wouldn't charge me for my 9 yr old son, so I guess its a wash for me either way)

Other Thoughts:

This course seems to be an integral part of the resort, and is well-maintained, pretty and very fun to play. It was very tranquil when i played. There were assorted family groups that I encountered, but largely I had this place to myself. I can also see this place playing differently come summer, as the rough that was burned off when I played will ratchet up the risk/reward factor quite a bit.
I will bring the family, rent a tree house and play this course several more times. Worth making the drive.

Pros:

many holes that make you take a minute to stop and admire the beautiful property. nice fairways, pads, and baskets, turf greens with a basket stuck on them.

Cons:

very little signage, most the laminated paper signs are gone. basket location, I kept thinking that some of the holes could have better basket locations,

Other Thoughts:

overall this is the best course I have played to date. but a course of this high caliber has to have permanent signage. In my opinion some of the hole could benefit from new basket locations.

Review 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 21, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

It's a picturesque course with wonderful vistas.

There is a great diversity of shots: Huge bombs, Water Shots, Elevation, a few short technical shots.

It's very well-maintained

Cons:

It had a bit of damage to one tee sign. The tee signs are oddly designed but you can glean the appropriate information you need from them if you take a little time.

The only real con is that I wish the course was 27 holes.

Other Thoughts:

Absolutely worth the trip to the course. There are rumors about the course's existence but there doesn't seem to be any interest in pulling it at the moment. Still, I would play it before they start to think about it.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 25, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

My wife and adult daughter liked this course a lot and they're not avid disc golfers. That alone makes this a great course because my family will go back.

Hole lengths were just right. Good mix of shorter and longer holes mixed up the game.

Terrain changes are great on this course. Plenty of ups and downs to make it interesting. We particularly liked the holes where the tee was high up with the basket a good distance off which made for nice, long drives that hung in the air a long time. Hole 6 was a really nice shot due to this aspect. Holes 2 and 19 were also nice for this type of shot.

Good mix of drives on the old golf fairways and new wooded fairways. The wooded fairways got us out of the sun which is much of the reason I prefer DG over ball golf.

Thanks to the designer for putting disc retriever poles next to the two water obstacles!!!! I can't say this enough because too few DG players bring a disc retriever with them. My wife and daughter used these on hole 4 to retrieve their floating Innova Dragons.

For a private course, the $5 fee was minimal. One spends more on a burger than that.

Friendly staff. Even the grounds keeper talked to us and was friendly.

Conveniently part of the cabin/treehouse rentals so access for someone staying in the cabins is great.

Cons:

I don't live close enough to this course

Other Thoughts:

I suggested to the desk clerk they rent out floating discs and tell players about them. She appreciated the suggestion as she had not heard of floating discs. While we approached hole 3, we encountered two guys attempting to retrieve non-floating discs from the pond. They lost their disc.

Much of the old golf course was unused so this could easily handle another 18 holes.

Update to give credit where it's due 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 18, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice baskets; 2 sets of level, well poured concrete pads helps make the challenging length of the course more manageable for beginners; 2 pin placements on most holes; benches on almost every hole; lots of trash cans; permanent signage and arrows pointing to next holes and printed course maps in the pro shop make navigation easy; bathrooms situated in the middle of the front 9; good variety; effective long rake at water hazard

Cons:

No pin placement indicators on tee signs; tall, thick rough on a few holes; $10 to play

Other Thoughts:

I gave a pretty critical review after playing the course a few years ago. However, I was impressed at all the great work that has been done to the course which addressed most all of my original complaints. While the price to play is still a bit steep (especially when you have to pay for the whole foursome), most every activity in Ridgedale isn't cheap ($15 nature trails, $30 cave tours, etc). Everyone in my group had fun despite the length and elevation in the humidity. After scouting the area and playing a few other courses in the area, I've concluded this is the best course in the Branson/Ozark area.

What a course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Can't say any more than what has already been stated. I used to play this course when it was a Ball Golf course. Brought back a lot of memories while I was playing. Great use of elevated pads and loved the doglegs.

Cons:

Back in the day this course was named "Oakmont", but we called it "Rockmont", and for good reason. Several of the holes, 9 in particular, are very very rocky and can chew up discs. but that's my only con.

Other Thoughts:

Love this course. And since I'm a local, I'm making this my home course. ;)

A lot of fun on old golf course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 21, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Good tees (concrete)
- Good signs
- Astroturf greens (golf holes only, cuts down on erosion)
- Good balance of shots
- Interesting terrain
- Pro shop on site
- Double loop of 9's

Cons:

- Could use another set of tees to appeal to different skill levels.

Other Thoughts:

A fully-stocked pro shop greets you as you pull up to the course. As of this reviewer's visit, the green fee was $5 for the day. You are given a map of the course, which will come in handy on a few holes where the next tee is not apparent from the previous basket. A short walk takes you past the namesake of the course, a house that's built on a pedestal and looks like a tree house.

The course is built on a former ball golf course (fun fact: I played it as a golf course soon after it opened 20+ years ago) and plays several of the fairways to baskets that are mounted into the old greens, which are covered in artificial turf. Only about half of the holes are like this, most of the multi-shot holes, to be sure. There are several technical holes carved into the woods bordering the old course. A couple of ponds increase the penalty on several holes.

There is only one set of concrete tees, which are set at a "blue" level of difficulty. The course features a good balance of open big-drive holes and tight, finesse holes to test all aspects of the game. Being in southern Missouri, there is plenty of elevation available and the course does a good job of utilizing it in a fun way.

I always appreciate when an 18 hole course, in particular, a long course, brings you back to the parking lot mid-way through the round to restock on beverages or replacing lost discs and this course does that after 9 holes.

#18 finishes a ways from the parking lot, so there is a longish walk back to the car, but there is an unofficial 19th hole that finishes at the old #9 of the golf course (no basket).

Intermediate/Expert 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 27, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Course is set in a private resort, which has some seasonal homes and whatnot. Seeing how it is private and pay-to-play, there shouldn't be any chance for any interference. All other activities are well separated as well. Holes are split pretty even between open, ball golf terrain, and some pretty dense woods.
- Holes out in the open provide many opportunities to unleash the beast - very long holes with wide fairways, sloping both way down and slightly up. A good amount of par 4 holes; #6 is a long, downhill hyzer off the tee that jogs right at the bottom. #10 is a healthy 500', slight uphill, and #11 is 600' with a nasty slope all along the right side. #2 and #18 are both pretty deep downhill-sloped valleys; coming up short means a steep upshot to the green.
- Water comes into play in a few spots out here, throwing a RHFH shot on #3 goes directly over a pond, #4 also has water on the left, #6 has the pond to the left of the green, and #7's tee shot has to clear a small pond. Definitely in play on these holes, with drop zones for any shots that get wet.
- A handful of holes have many more trees to contend with, not necessarily in the woods but with obvious lines to hit. #5 has a left-sloping fairway with the basket up and on the right, the best line is a hyzer or RHFH flex shot, and #8 and #9 are uphill hyzers.
- Rest of the course is situated in very dense woods with very dense rough. Tunnel shots galore back here; accuracy is an absolute must. Pretty even mix of left and right fairways, #12 and #14 are RHFH friendly, while #13 is straight, and #15 and #17 have a hyzer finish at the end. Very different from the rest of the course.
- As mentioned before; lots of elevation changes present here. Not only the ups and downs of the fairways, but also on the sides of the holes with big rollaway punishment. #1, #11, and #16 all have big slopes on the right side that will swallow errant shots. Some sloped greens as well, on top of tree-protected greens.
- Good teepads, baskets, and laminated tee signs. Navigation can be a little tricky in spots, like getting from #7 to #8, so checking the map is a good idea.

Cons:

- Holes out in the open are really out in the open... those that play on the old ball golf course have zero trees in the fairways; only on the sides. About 1/3-1/2 of the holes fall into this category, so it is pretty significant.

Other Thoughts:

- Not many cons at this course - excellent mix of wooded and open holes, big time elevation changes in spots, extreme bombers and technical lines in the woods. The turf greens are a good touch on the old golf greens, and the water adds a lot of character. Very good course for intermediate or expert players, beginners might be overwhelmed.
- Basket #19 is pending, to my understanding, but the hole is playable. Sounds like it will inevitably be installed.
- The Journey Post is on site here too!

Definitely a must play if in Branson 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 30, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

If you like to be able to grip and rip this is a great course. Holes 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, 16, 18, 19 (if there were a basket) have very open drives that allow you to really show off your arm. I especially liked hole 2, my 400 ft max distance arm on flat ground could get pretty much get to the pin.

The woods holes were well layed out and not super long, mostly putters or Rocs for me.

The astro turf greens were a nice change. Overall, I didn't think the greens were very difficult. I really only felt a big "Water Work" type pucker when putting on hole 5, but even there the ground was fairly rough and may have prevented a big roll away. As much elevation as the course has, I am sure some alternate pins could be placed in some tougher spots.

There were nice benches at probably half the holes that were flat and placed in a good spot to allow me to take some good video with my iPhone. Not a big plus, but I haven't had that opportunity before.

Course was well maintained and liked the use of the old ball golf fairways.

Cons:

These are fairly insignificant compared to all of the pros the course offers.

Pro shop was closed, but it is a holiday and the time of year where there are a lot of stores closed in Branson, so not a big dissapointment there, but I did wish I was able to get a disc from the Journey Post.

The shortest walk from 7 to 8 cuts right across 2. Would be a pretty good walk around 2's green if a tourney was going on.

No basket on 19.

One tee and one basket setting on each hole. There were some AM tee pads spray painted on the grass in a few spots. Would like to see shorter pads on a lot of the holes to allow my kids and older parents to be able to enjoy the course.

Other Thoughts:

On a few of the holes, 6 and 10, that I remember, there were some OB's marked on the map that really tightened up the fairway. I could see on several of the other holes great opportunities for mandos and OBs that could make this course a beast for tournament play.

I haven't played a lot of other ball golf courses that are now disc courses, but I would say this is a better layout than those used at the Glass Blown last year and I thought both of those were good courses.
