5 Stars...for a pitch and putt. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 6, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

1) The use of the land available is simply amazing. The plot is small, by far the smallest piece of land I've ever seen a course on, but the designer did probably as good as they could with with what's here.

2) Carrying on from the previous point, the layout is mostly pretty good. There's some iffy holes (mentioned in the cons), some good ones, and a couple really good (bordering on great) ones. Here's a couple highlights. 5 is one of the longer holes on the course and plays best for a LHBH/RHFH turnover. It's completely blind off the tee and basket sits out in the open about 10-15ft off of the fence line at the edge of the park. Getting around the corner while still keeping it pushed far enough right to get into the circle is the challenge here. Hole 7 is my personal favorite on the course, though 5 is close. It's about the same distance as 5 but pretty steep downhill. There is a very tight gap at around circles edge that will shut down any shots that aren't fully committed to the line, kicks can be brutal depending where they go. There is a safe layup option, but it almost completely takes birdie out of play. Rough is and the OB fence line are close behind and ready to punish anything coming in too hot. Hole 3 plays like a mini (and downhill) version of hole 4 at BRP. OB is close behind once again. Hole 4 is a tight, slightly right to left shot. Very easy birdie if you hit the line, but still tough to save par if you hit early.

3) Variation in the layout is good as well. Tunnel shots, open shots, forehand and backhand shots (despite most holes being right to left); most of it is here. Despite how short the course is having both a forehand and a backhand will be useful, though not a necessity.

4) The greens are generally quite protected with many trees close by, but unless you find yourself in a place you shouldn't be anyway it never feels too unfair.

5) Tees are great. Grippy, concrete, in great shape, and more than large enough. They're almost too big with how short most of the holes are. The only iffy pad is 3, which is different from the other 8. It's a little smaller (though still plenty large) and points almost directly into the woods instead of down the fairway.

6) Tee signs are nice and rustic feeling. They are updated from when the course photos were taken. Most holes have wooden signs with basic hole maps (hole shape and foliage) and distances painted(?) on them. Distances do differ from what is currently in the 'hole info' tab on some holes, but I didn't mark down what the new signs say. Will try to remember to do so if I'm at the course again soon.

7) The park has plenty of amenities; specifically a port-a-potty is always a plus. Though, I didn't use it so I have no input on whether it's emptied/cleaned on a regular basis.

Cons:

1) I'll get the obvious out of the way first. It's very short. It's almost funny at times. Hole 2 and 8 are just straight shots barely 150ft at most and almost nothing in the way of obstacles until you are right next to the baskets. Not terrible holes, but you're always going to be at least a little bit upset with par. Hole 4 is also bordering on 'too short' but it's tight enough to stay interesting. Hole 6 is the worst hole on the course for me. Unbelievably short and the ground is littered with old tree stumps just waiting to flip a park job on edge and roll into jail on the left. The only thing hole 6 has going for it is that it's not flat. Though, this shortness is just the nature of the plot of land and there's not really anything they can do to mitigate this. Again, like I mentioned above, what they've done with the tiny space they have is nothing short of amazing.

2) A couple holes are very close together/to other park activities. A shank on hole 2 could easily find it's way onto the basketball court, there is a walking path running through a couple holes (though it's not super heavily used), and hole 1 plays along side a combination baseball field/soccer pitch. In most cases these won't cause issues, but it's worth mentioning.

3) Continuing from before, holes are pretty cramped as well. Holes 1 and 8 are separated from the rest of the holes but the rest of them are nearly on top of each other. Hole 2s basket is maybe 15 feet from 3s fairway. Hole 5s tee is definitely in the danger zone from tee shots on 4. Hole 6s tee isn't too bad, but still in play from tee shots on 5 and 7. Hole 6s basket is in play from 9s tee shot (and vice versa). Lastly, holes 7 and 9 have crossing fairways. This course seems like it does get fairly busy and I can see some gnarly backups forming from all these hole interactions, though it wasn't too bad when I played despite a steady flow of players.

4) Just one design quirk that shouldn't exist; the basket placement on hole 1 is a bit silly. It's tucked just past the edge of the fence line, maybe 10 feet past and 5 feet left of it. This can lead to drives 15 feet out that just have absolutely no real look to putt. There's plenty of space behind and left of the basket that would give a couple nice guardian trees and a generally less frustrating green area and I think would make the hole much nicer to play.

5) The buckthorn is completely taking over the course in a couple places. Hole 4, specifically, clearly used to have a left gap, but its been completely overtaken by buckthorn and it's almost a complete non-option to go that way. Buckthorn can be a real pain to deal with since it's so invasive, but the city/county could clear out the fairways and the edges of the rough around this course with less than a single day of work with how little space it takes up. Not much more than a couple of hours a year taking down re-growth could prevent it from getting out of hand again.

6) Minor, but old school DGA Mach 2s. They work fine, but they are old school DGA baskets so you will get the usual dead center spit outs and cut throughs. Though, they do have nice big number plates on them, so you won't ramp off the top of them if you miss high.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, for what this course is it's surprisingly good. It's short, quite technical, and great fun. I got into a groove and pumped out 7 ~20 minutes rounds in a row my first time here just before this review and would have kept going if it didn't get dark. Every hole is birdie or die but most of them will punish you enough for being off just a little bit to make saving birdie tough. A couple of them (hole 5 specifically) will almost immediately send you to bogey-ville with a bad kick. Shooting -9 should be in play for a lot of people, even sub 900 rated players if they get on fire. For reference I'm currently 916 rated and shot two -7s with some small mistakes. Perfect pitch and putt golf, but it's still pitch and putt golf. I am very close to rating the course a 2.5 due to very high fun factor, but I realize that is extremely subjective. So, due to the extreme short length and only being 9 holes I'm going to keep it at a 2.0. If you are within 30-45 minutes of this course and in the mood for some good pitch and putt golf I highly recommended making a trip out here. If you are driving though the area and have a little bit of time to kill, you should definitely make the stop here over any of the other courses in the Stillwater area.

Shorter than a kneeling midget 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 5, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Very nice tee pads and baskets. +1 star each. Very cool pine smell as you walk through the pine forest. +1 star. Nice use of elevation, and very tight lines. +1 star.

Cons:

Shorter than a kneeling midget, seriously only 1 hole is over 200' long (and I think it clocks in at a solid 210'). -1 star. Tee signs are there on most holes, but have been knocked down. Some of the teepads put you in the line of fire on the next hole. -1 star.

Other Thoughts:

Not a terrible course for putter work. Couple left turns, couple right turns. Nothing long, nothing really special. Not worth a long drive to play, but if you are in the area, and want to play a putter only round it will give you something to do.

Pros:

--Good Layout--You generally know where to go for the next tee. Only #9 is a bit of a walk, but it has a sign.

--They make do with what they have. The course is shoehorned into a small park, but they still have good variety of shots.

--Baskets are well protected by trees, I think only #2 and #8 are the only ones with open ace runs.

--Baskets are nice and in good condition.

--Plenty of trees to work around, have to shape your shots.

--Hardly any underbrush, so you can spot your disc easily if it goes off the trail

--Can play very quickly.

--Hole 3 reminds me of BRP number 4, a hallway shot through pines. This one is more forgiving though. :)

--Good use of the elevation.

--Great chances for aces on almost every hole.

Cons:

--Short. I only used a midrange once the whole course.

--Hole 4 is frustrating. No lines to the basket, you just throw and hope the disc somehow makes it through all the trees. Hole 7 is similar.

--Teeboxes are wood rectangles with dirt filling them in. Not a big deal, but the teeboxes hold water and get muddy. They also aren't very big, but you don't need a run up on this course.

--Poison Ivy--I got a little bit while I was there, I think in between holes 3 and 4.

--9 very short holes get old pretty fast. I was bored after 4 quick rounds, and I don't think I'll be going back soon.

Other Thoughts:

Not a bad little course considering what they had to work with. Good for some quick rounds and some ace runs. I got my first ace on #2, which was fun. Not very challenging, the only hard holes are difficult because of all the trees in the fairway. One or two "thread the needle shots and you could walk away with an 18. Like another reviewer said, it's too bad that the Stillwater/OPH area only has this course. Hopefully they get another course built soon.

Pros:

good use of the tiny space allotted. some of the holes make up for the shortness with tree obstacles

Cons:

very short, more of a practice course for most but a good one to work on midrange skillz.

Tees are very small, most throw from beside them.

Other Thoughts:

I only go there because it is very close by.

Pros:

Well maintained! Some holes have a good feel and good hole placement. Hole 7 is the best hole on the course, nice down hill through some tight trees. Great course for a beginner.

Cons:

Short, Short, Short! Pads could use some work. Most of the holes are wide open. Not very imaginative.
