Scratches the Itch, Not Much More 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

I was driving back home from the coast and needed a place to stretch my legs, fortunately I found this course and decided to drop in.
-Baskets are nice, newer and in good condition
-Locals clearly use it. I saw several groups playing, carrying bags and even carts
-Great way to introduce friends and kids to the sport
-Lots of ace runs
-Literally 2 minutes off of the highway, so a great chance to break up a long drive without losing much time (I played the course in 18 minutes)
-Good amenities, include a warmup basket and porto-potties.

Cons:

-Incredibly short, only one hole longer than 200'
-This is a busy park and the shelters and playground all are really close to fairways. It would be very easy to hit a stray child.
-When I played there were people sitting on a small wall in 2s fairway watching their kids on the playground.
-The walk from 4 to 5 is really inconvenient, as is the walk from 9 back to the parking lot.
-Fairways play very close to each other, especially on the back half.
-The creek stunk when I was there, not sure if this is common though

Other Thoughts:

In the end, this course served its purpose, giving me a chance to stretch my legs. However, there wasn't really any charm to it. None of the holes really stood out and the crowded park forced me to change lines a couple of times. The course was squeezed in where they could fit it, so I'll never complain about more courses, but this is certainly nothing special. I'm glad I stopped, but if you're traveling by and have more time I'd recommend continuing up the road to London, KY to play Whitley Branch.

Briar Creek - Leg Stretcher Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course at Briar Creek is a new ( 2018 ) 9 holer just off I-75 at the bottom of the state of Kentucky . When going east of Ky-92 , there was no sign for Briar Creek Park Rd. ( I missed it and drove past ) so look for the Mexican restaurant El Dorado's on your left just a few hundred yards down from the interstate , and Turn on a little street right before it . The park will appear in just a few hundred yards and to your right . The first tee and basket will appear immediately . If parking is overflowing ( the lot is small , you can drive a little further , cross a cement bridge to your left , and drop down to another picnic area to your immediate right and park . This is where the course will eventually end . The course itself has a Port O John up by the first tee . There is also a practice basket in a tight area next to a shelter . There is 1 small cement tee per hole . No real run or walk up is needed to tee off on these short holes , but I like longer pads so the kids can learn on them . The signage is adequate , giving you the hole number and distance . You will not need a hole layout on these signs because you will see the baskets at every tee pad and most of the holes are under 200' New Patriot baskets were installed on the course . The course itself is cut up into 3 parts . 1 &2, then 3 & 4 , then 5-9 . I will take you through it . #1 is at the entrance to the park and the fairway runs parallel to the road . #2 is on the right of #1's basket and throws slightly down with a large tree blocking your drive . There is adequate room for a hyzer or a anhyzer throw . #3 is a short walk to the immediate right of #2's basket . This is a real short throw in between 2 picnic shelters . #4 is to the immediate left and has a shelter to the left , where you throw to a makeshift green a little left of the tee pad . Do not take the path leading to the creek to the left of the basket . You have to backtrack a little and cross the first bridge over the creek and take a walk to the right where the next picnic area is . The first tee pad you come up to ( #5 ) will also run parallel to the road . The fairway is short and drops off on the left to the cement lot . #6 tee pad sits behind the #5 basket down a little hill and to the left . It throws to a basket kind of at the end of a cement pathway/vehicle drive . #7 throws toward the picnic area , and the last couple of holes go back and forth, one a short drive into grove of trees guarding the pin . The course can play solo in about 20 minutes or so . My line of thinking says that this course was intended to draw the local area to the park and give the youngsters something to do . This is also a quick course to access from the interstate and break up a long drive . Most can really throw this course with a putter , so you can leave your bag in the car . The course is flat and easy on the legs , great for newbies and casual play locals .

Cons:

The course is almost pancake flat . No challenge , very short . For a short course , navigation can be confusing , especially without a map . I saw no kiosk when I parked and you have to feel your way around this short area to find the next tee , especially from #4 to #5 . My biggest con is also my biggest concern . If this park is even half full ( it only had a few families when I was there ) , there will be possible casualties everywhere . Even a putter could sting a small kid at 160' . The locals that were there when I played were more curious and were really only in my way on #3's fairway , but the course itself is set within the confines of 2 shelter areas .

Other Thoughts:

I think that the city of Williamsburg did a nice job of putting a disc golf course together for people to enjoy . I guess they could have hidden it in another part of the city , but they chose to keep it close to the interstate and available for the kids and families to play when using this park . This is a multi use park with a stadium down near holes 5-9 , so the kids can take a disc and throw while their older brother or sister is playing in a game at the field . This is a great leg stretcher for travelers that can play a very quick round and either get a bite to eat up the street , or just sit and enjoy this small park . My recommendation : NOT A GO-TO TYPE COURSE , BUT A GREAT PLAY FOR LOCALS , NEWBIES OR DISC GOLF ENTHUSIASTS LOOKING TO THROW A FEW HOLES AND RELAX .
