Exactly the Intermediate Course We Needed

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 26, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Disc golf is exploding and courses are building all over, but seems everyone is in a hurry to build the hardest and longest. Meanwhile, UDisc data suggests more than half the disc golfers are below AM4 level. We seem to be short-sighted in not building more courses like this. There may not be a lot of "glory" in building an Intermediate course, but kudos to those that did. This is exactly what we needed in the greater Pittsburgh area.

They are already set up with the basic requirements of a good course. They have 18 concrete tees, one on each hole. Maybe a set of long tees in the future could be a great addition but for now it's nice to have concrete. They have DIscatcher baskets in orange so they stand out well. The park itself is really nice, it's full of amenities. There were bathrooms in multiple places. There was parking at multiple stops along the course. There are picnic tables and benches with garbage cans, as well.

For the style of course they wanted to achieve, they did a great job of creating a course with some fun variety. You get a lot of elevation, shooting up or downhill most of the time, though none of that elevation is ridiculous levels. There are pretty equal right and left shots, as well, helping teach forehand and backhand.

The park has some really nice natural features, as well. They did good work setting up some nice greens in wooded areas. The views from the high side of the hill are very pretty and once you get down towards Brush Creek itself, then the park really shows off its' wooded side.

Cons:

It's hard to knock a course of this style too much. I have played a lot of courses and take ratings seriously. I started this review with praising the intent, but an intermediate is probably never getting 5 stars from me either. It's fun to go out and throw mids around at each hole and a challenge to see how many birds you can get, but what's here is - yes - mostly fairway golf.

That applies to the natural aspects as well. I'm into disc golf mostly for the walk in a park. This is a pretty one, but it's mostly a dog walker park. You're playing a loop around a parking lot that plays in unused spaces, but never really uses the gorgeous scenery of this park.

Other Thoughts:

It is a lengthy drive into the park once you enter. It seems like the Map is off but keep going. Lots of dog walkers, so mind the curves.
